Comments about Aulos 3-Piece Alto Recorder:

I also agree with Jim Lyttle on his review. If you really want a wooden recorder, wooden recorders are very specialized in recorder environments... like conservatories where you have more than one type of soprano or other recorders... then you really want a specific sound... (where wooden is the way to go) complemented by other like recorders. If you are playing in a "broken consort," an ensemble of a trio or quartet of single or double bass, tenor, alto and soprano, or with other instruments, like guitar and stuff, then the sound of an individual recorder comes out and is harder to compare. Even ABS plastic with high quality manufactures like Aulos. That is where ABS has it's advantages. Especially with Aulos. The Aulos A309A-E recorder, the above mentioned is a an extremely good recorder. I am comparing it to a Tudor model I had bought. The less expensive Tudor model is hard to obtain the upper register. High E,F and G and it's chromatic counterparts. The Tudor model also created a "quivering sound" on Low F (even after the brake-in period.") It's all due to the placement and shape of the fipple, which is the most important part of your recorder. If not properly set and created, it will not be able to get the high register well and the lows will suffer. I bought this Aulos model, for a solution to that problem. And, I found it to be a very good responsive recorder, very clear on all the notes it can produce. I also have a Soprano and Sapranino by Aulos. After buying other brands for Tenor and Alto, I bought Aulos models as replacements...(including the one above) and I am very happy with the results. First, you have to understand that Aulos has a DOUBLE SEALED joint for it's three pieces. This makes air leaks between the joint virtually impossible...just like cork joints on a wooden model. This allows you to get the high registers easily. Plus, Aulos is specialized in ABS recorders. ABS, unlike wood has great strength, is water proof, is resistant to extreme temperature changes (Thus ABS plastic drainage pipe in hardware stores...more expensive but used for commercial purposes) and is made on these recorders to be of the consistency like wood, very dense, almost the consistency of putty or rubber, but VERY HARD...just like high quality wood instruments like African boxwood and granadilla (like a clarinet.) Though you might want those woods for those type of instruments, a recorder is more primitive and it's sound goes well with high quality ABS models. ABS creates the resonance of wood... so, properly formulated, it creates a wooden sound... difficult to detect unless you are a professional recorder player... which most listeners are not...so ABS will sound fine to practically every listener. Aulos does this. So, if you are planning on trying the recorder, or becoming very inept on it within an environment where the recorder STANDS OUT as a one-of-a-kind instrument, then this is great recorder for you. Don't be shy of the ABS material... for this company is dedicated to that material for professional sounding instruments.

Comments about Aulos 3-Piece Alto Recorder:

This brand of plastic recorders is considered the best by all experienced recorder people.
Wooden ones are only better if you are playing in a classical conservatory.
