Comments about Engelhardt EM1 Maestro Double Bass:

It needs to be set-up. If you're good with woodworking and have the tools and some knowledge set it up yourself. If not then go to a bass Luthier and don't screw around with such a fine piece of American ingenuity. Get yourself a good Quarter-sawn bridge as it comes with one that is not, (but good enough for a back-up). The only thing this bass doesn't come with that would put it right up there with the big boys is a good bridge, an ebony tail piece, nut and fingerboard which can easily be done by a good Luthier. Never mind all the hype about how much better carved basses are. Those things are overrated because they were built back in the good ole days when people took pride in what they made. Well this Engelhardt Maestro EM1 is just as well built as those old basses because this company was around and built them back then too, (Kays).

Comments about Engelhardt EM1 Maestro Double Bass:

It's a tank! Sturdy, but with a really good sound. Needed set up of course, but I expected that, so no surprises. I bought it used, but frankly, there were only a few dings, probably about 2 days worth if it were in a local school.

The string bass was received promptly and in good condition. I have not had time to play extensively but my initial impression is that it is of good quality.

Comments about Engelhardt EM1 Maestro Double Bass:

Pretty beastly. It's got a big boom and easy playability. It's not as awesome as my hand carved 100 year old German upright but, doggone fine instrument. Get one. Use it as your main or a sweet backup.

              Engelhardt Maestro

Comments about Engelhardt EM1 Maestro Double Bass:

I recommend anyone that buys this bass to get new strings, a better bridge, and have it professionally setup before getting too serious with it.
It may not sound like an expensive carved German bass, but the laminated construction will last forever on the road.
The finish is kinda cheap, but upright basses get so banged up all the time, it doesnt really matter.
This bass is really nice for the same money. For the same price as a cheap Chinese bass, you get a heavy duty upright thats made in America.

              EM-1 BULL FIDDLE

              By

              from Cookeville TN.

Comments about Engelhardt EM1 Maestro Double Bass:

The EM-1 is a joy to play. I don't use a bow and I like a big boomy sound so I use Weedwacker Pros since gut strings are so expensive. This bull fiddle has a jatoba or"brazilian cherry" fingrboard, nut, and tailpiece. You don't need to plane the fingerboard or anything like that for Bluegrass. I do recommend a set-up though. The factory bridge could have been a little better quality, but no complaints. This thing is a U.S.A. made tank. The tuners are amazing and pretty too. All the Engelhardts are laminated and for that matter except for color and fingerboard, nut, and tailpiece material(ebony),They are all the same instrument from the same mold. Unless you play Classical music you had better go with laminated, because the first time dew or cold air hits your gozillian dollar carved bass, there is a good chance it will warp causing change in the action hieght and tuning problems. My EM-1 sounds better eveytime I play it and another good thing is resale value. Go price one of these say 10 years old and you will pay as much or more than a new one. Overall, a beautiful and a quality bass.
