The student flugelhorn, while originally developed to serve as a signal horn for the military, has grown to become a valuable piece of the puzzle in a diverse set of genres. From marching bands, to jazz quartets, to pop music (Paul McCartney has played the flugelhorn on many Beatles songs as well as in his own solo work), the flugelhorn brings distinct character to music that students and hobbyists alike will enjoy. The flugelhorn shares similar characteristics with the trumpet and cornet. With a similar shape and Bb pitch, it could be easy for someone not familiar with the differences between the instruments to mistake them for one another. The flugelhorn, however, features a wider bell and more pronounced cone that results in a fuller, more mellow sound than the one produced by the trumpet. Its relaxed sound is one that you can hear in a diverse number of popular recordings, from the jazz pop of "Feels so Good" by Chuck Mangione to the indie rock of "Holland, 1945" by Neutral Milk Hotel.
Student flugelhorns feature three piston valves that, in conjunction with your breath control, help to create the instrument’s sound. That’s not to say that other elements don’t affect the sound of the instrument. For example, the AFH 201-O Bb Flugelhorn from Amati features a .437 inch bore that is designed to produce a darker tone. On the other hand, the YFH-2310 Series Student Bb Flugelhorn from Yamaha includes a laser-fused, pluzuma welded bell that helps to produce an even vibration in all registers. Each student flugelhorn features its own pros, and in the end it comes down to simply deciding which one sounds and works best for you.
When starting down the path of playing an instrument, it’s important to find one that matches your skills and style. With the student flugelhorn that’s right for you, you will be ready to learn and grow as both a player and a fan of the sweet sounds of this instrument.
