Cremona SV-175 Violin OutfitI'm an absolute beginner at the fiddle but i play a few other instruments so i feel like i can judge the quality of an instrument ok. That said, i am thoroughly impressed with this violin! It has nice tone, it stays in tune, it's beautiful and looks well made. The case that it comes with is also great. It has a nice storage space for accessories and a zip up pocket on the front for sheet music. One of the neatest things about it is that it has a hygrometer for measuring humidity. Very nice!I bought this violin with the idea that i could start out on it and see if i like playing the violin and then upgrade in the future. After having this for a couple of weeks i feel like it's going to take me a long way in my violin-playing endeavor and i don't expect to have to upgrade for a few years (if ever). The Cremona SV-175 Violin Outfit has exceeded my expectations. On a side note, the customer service and support at musician's friend are fantastic! I will be ordering again from them for all my future musical needs. :)

Upon reciept of the violin we couldn't tune it well as the tuning pegs were improperly set .. took it to a lutheier that found a warped neck and the pegs were not correctly set for tuning.
The luthier would have charged alot just to set this instrument up .. basically junk out of the box.

A string was broken but my set-up man fixed and fine tune the violin. It is my wife's violin she said it played fine.

Comments about Cremona SV-175 Violin Outfit:

            Way better than expected.

I am a beginner with the violin, but have played guitar for 25+ years. I own Gibson and Fender guitars and set them up myself, so I have a good understanding of quality craftsmanship.

The SV-175 is a quality instrument. Not to say that it is pull out of the box and just play. There are some important points to learn that will help you with the set up.
            A couple key points:
Tuning pegs are there to rough tune only and must be friction pushed into headstock as you are turning. Do this carefully supporting the headstock so that you do crack or damage anything. I recommend watching youtube videos to understand this.
Tune flat of the note for each string and use the fine tuners in the tailstock to bring up to correct note.
The tuning is G-D-A-E for violin. A chromatic tuner works best.

Tighten the bow so that there is about 1/2 inch of space between hair and bow at the center.
Rosin the hair from base to tip. not just center area.
Do not apply to much bow pressure when bowing the strings, but not too little either. just the right amount will produce the best sound. comes with practice.

The resonation from the SV-175 is amazing. I am quite happy with the instrument and played a few songs right away.

Expect the strings to need fine tuning for a while when new because the stretch and it takes a little while to get them stable. new guitar strings are like this and require some pulling and stretching when you first put them on, to get them set where they stay in tune.

            Good luck!

Comments about Cremona SV-175 Violin Outfit:

I received the Cremona SV-175 Violin today.

First impressions: Very light. Quality Case. Beautiful Violin and Bow.

When I opened the case I thought WOW, exactly how I hoped it would all look.

First thing to do is take the tags off of the tuning peg. Tuning is G-D-A-E. Youtube/Internet has great tuning video.
When tuning, do not overtighten the strings as they will break if tightened too much. Before you turn a tuning peg hold the opposite side for support of the neck. While tuning, gently push the tuning pegs a little further into the holes because a friction fit is needed to hold the pegs from slipping.
Tune under the desired note so that there is some additional tightening needed to bring it to the desired pitch. Use the Fine Tuners to tighten the rest of the way to bring the strings to perfect pitch.
                the Violin is now ready.
Tighten the Horsehair on the Bow by tightening the knob at the end of the Bow, until the center of the Bow/Hair have a distance of about half inch.
Apply Resin to the Bow String. Make sure to cover the hair from Base to Tip.

I played a beginner song in the first two minutes.

I will be playing at a beginner level in 2 months.
                Now its Practice Practice Practice.

Comments about Cremona SV-175 Violin Outfit:

This summer I made the spontaneous decision to buy and learn the violin. I'm 20 years old. I found this and bought it, not knowing *anything* about violins really. I was very pleased to say that it worked out well! The E string snapped after like 2 weeks, but that may be due to the fact that I was tuning it wrong. I bought a new E string and replaced it and all strings stay in tune perfectly now. The bow that comes with it is kind of heavy at the end, my teacher always complains about it but I got used to it fine, it just makes it harder to hold.
The case it comes with is beautiful and roomy and protective. The violin itself is beautiful!
I don't know much about violins so take what I say with a grain of salt, but this worked out great for me!!

The quality of the violin was extremely poor, unplayable. The tuners are inept. A string may briefly maintain pitch, but likely not long enough to tune the others. 2 minutes out of the box and I've decided to return it.

All i was looking for was a playable instrument, i will be testing others in person before replacing.

This fiddle will get you going. The sound is OK but not "performance level" of course. Just choose a shoulder rest to complete the outfit. I like it 'cause I can take it camping and won't be too upset if it gets damaged or lost. And don't believe the "hygrometer" in the case. I doubt that it runs 60% humidity here in the desert of Arizona! You might want to include a humidifier for the case if you live in the Southwest...if you're lookin' to start a child in music or you're a novice like myself, you can't go wrong with this one. I'm not sure how long it will last but by the time it falls apart I'll either be ready for a better one or will have given up on fiddle entirely!
