The synthesizers' roots stretch back as far as the late 19th century when the first basic oscillators were discovered. In 1965 Robert Moog made the first synthesizers commercially available and soon musicians such as the Beatles, the Byrds and Simon & Garfunkel started using this new instrument in their recordings. Throughout the 1970s synthesizer technology continued to evolve and musicians began to feature the synth more prominently in their recordings, which culminated in a new genre of music called "Synthpop" becoming very popular in the 1980's. The early synthesizers were large and prohibitively expensive, but thanks to the innovations of companies like Korg and their Monotron series, you can buy a decent sounding (if limited) analog synthesizer for less than $50.
