I had to write this review as I've made a recent discovery. I bought this pedal about two years to give me some old style tremolo like "Suzie Q" and "Gimme Shelter". It did what I wanted. I have a late seventies Vibro Champ and it is similar. However, I got a new tube amp two months ago and had also bulit a new pedal board and rearranged the pedals. I was getting a noticeable noise just by turning on the amp which was making the drive channel disenchanting. I removed the tremolo pedal and noise gone. I still wanted a tremolo pedal and was looking online at different pedals, reading reviews, dreading maybe paying a lot more than I wanted. I finally came upon a review for a tremolo pedal where the owner said place the tremolo before your distortion /overdrive to eliminate noise. I put the Tuna melt third after my Boss tuner and my Cry Baby and problem solved. So now I'm going tuner, Cry Baby, Tuna Melt,Barber overdrive, chorus, MXR analog delay, amp and no problems. No noise. I still get a very slight volume increase when the pedal is engaged but it is something I can easily adjust with my guitar volume. So, save yourself a lot of money and go with this ,just watch where you place it in your chain

I bought this pedal new for about 35.00 bucks and now wished I'd paid a little more and gotten something a little more substantial. It's plastic canary yellow housing is pretty wimpy, kinda cool looking. The insides arn't much better as the inlet jack has broken with minimal use. As some of the other reviews have stated there is a slight cut in volume which needs to be accounted for when switched on. Another pain in the butt feature to the Danelectro mini pedals the whole base has to come off to get a 9V battery in. On the plus side you can get some decent trem sounds if you mess with it awhile. The trem on my multi-effects pedal does sound better though.

A No-Frills Trem That Does The Job

Comments about Danelectro DJ-5 Tuna Melt Tremolo Pedal:

Yes, it's in a plastic housing. Yes, the switch is one of those soft-touch ones. Yes, it comes in a blister pack. But tremolo is a pretty simple effect, and the Tuna Melt is the bang-for-the-buck winner in the tremolo category.

There are controls for speed and depth, as is typical for tremolo. The Tuna Melt also has a mini-toggle that allows you to switch between triangle wave and square wave tremolo. The triangle wave is far more useful than the square wave, at least for me. I don't generally do the choppy trem style, so I tend to keep it on the triangle side. And it does that traditional style of tremolo very well. It does not seem to add any noise to my signal chain, and it adds the warble that I needed (the amp I'm using right now doesn't have trem or reverb). The pedal doesn't particularly add any color to the sound, either. There is the expected slight perceived volume drop when engaging the pedal, but that's what happens with tremolo. For this price, I'm not too broken up about not having a volume control to combat that. This pedal does a basic tremolo very nicely. And it didn't break the bank.

I don't think there's really anything to worry about with the plastic housing or the switch. Just because they're often referred to as "stomp boxes" doesn't mean that you actually have to "stomp" on them. I treat all my pedals gently because that's how my momma raised me.

I don't necessarily expect to keep the Tuna Melt on my board forever, but for now, it's definitely a keeper. With the right OD before it and the right reverb after it, it does exactly what I generally want right now. You could pay five times this much (or more) on a tremolo and yes, you'd get a slew of extra features and options, but since I'm a "set it and forget it" sort of player for the most part, all those controls on a trem would just get in my way. I would recommend this pedal to anyone who needs a simple tremolo for an amp that doesn't supply it.

Comments about Danelectro DJ-5 Tuna Melt Tremolo Pedal:

Needed a simple tremelo effect for a couple songs we do each night. In the "old days" my amps had built in tremelo. This little pedal fit easily on my pedal board, and sounds excellent.

Comments about Danelectro DJ-5 Tuna Melt Tremolo Pedal:

Nice little pedal for what it does. There are more expensive ones out there but this one gets the job done right. I can't justify spending 100+ on something like a tremelo pedal. Danelectro pedals are a great value and have yet to let me down.
Some people complain about plastic casing on these Dano pedals but that hasn't been a problem. I have an older version of the pedal (which is essentially the same, only there is a switch for the hard/soft instead of a knob) which I recieved second-hand. The guy gigged with it for several years and I have been using it regularly for a few years now, and it still holds up perfectly. No complaints here.

Along with all the other positive reviews, I wanted to share that this thing sounds amazing with bass. A medium speed, hard cut on a bass riff gives a great electronic feel.

Comments about Danelectro DJ-5 Tuna Melt Tremolo Pedal:

Can't beat the sound for this low price. Too bad they didn't make it in a metal casing but as long as you don't stomp your heel on it with combat boots it will work fine for you. It DOES look plastically cheap and the writing and graphics leave a lot to be desired but I didn't buy it for the looks. I keep coming up with a better sound than our lead guitarist. He is all Mr. Les Paul and Marshall with BOSS multi effects... Me? Just simple Strat, Artcore Hollow body and Fender; spending way less cash and sounding better. We make a good combo for the music we play though.
