I've owned this head and two 1X12 cabs for a couple of years as my gigging amp. I get out about three times a month with the band and everywhere we play the sound guys just love this thing. They are always asking me about the amp and telling me how good it sounds. I asked the last guy how much he thought I spent on it. After looking it over and seeing Soldano on it he guessed about 4 times what it cost. I'm telling you this is one of the best amps I've ever owned. I just replaced the stock tubes with some EuroTubes and can't wait for the next gig...

I used a G&L Legacy through this JCA20H and could not get but one decent tone. That tone was with the gain and volume cranked thru a Celestion Century 12..and yet still, the bass notes got lost. Increasing the bass only muddied it up. For the most part, all five Strat positions sounded bad. Simply not good tone..I've been performing for 45 yrs, and owned many amps...this is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for". I'm sorry to say, I have to recommend you take a pass on this one if you intend to gig with it. If you use it as a practice amp, or are inclined to mod it, well....maybe.

Don't be fooled by the size or the wattage. This thing is a serious beast with amazing tone! I've played 4 gigs with it and it sounds better every time! I play a frankenstrat with a hotrail and run the amp into an Avatar 2x12 with V30s. Pure balls, you need one in your arsenal!!

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've owned this little amp for about two years, and it simply blows me away every time I play it -- it's extremely straight forward, easy to set up and the tone is completely out of the league of the other amps in this price range. For small club gigs it's the perfect choice, it's amazing how much sound 20 all tube watts gives you - I most often play it through an old Randall 4X12 loaded with Celestion speakers and it drives the cab with ease. Of course, with its simplicity, comes a few limitations - if you're a real effects geek, you may miss the an effects loop or on-board modeling capabilities. If you like straight up solid rock tones and don't like messing overly much with the equipment while playing -- this amp will suit your needs wonderfully... Of course, not that you can't run effects through it - but its plug in the guitar input, which is a bit limited compared to a dedicated loop. In conclusion - if you want HUGE rock tube tones in an easily portable, affordable, simply laid out head, you will love this amp. Sure, I'd love to have an Orange Rockerverb head, but you can buy four of the Jet City amps for the price, and really, not be sacrificing a lick in tone!!!

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have had my jca20h for about 2 years now. I love it so much! It sounds like an ac15 on steroids. It has great cleans and good crunch. I put the retro valves from jet city in the preamp and they sound great. I use mine clean and put all my effects through the front of the amp. I'm sure for people that want to use the gain built in they would want an effects loop. I don't need an effects loop, but it would have been nice to have one. With that being said, it has great tone and it is a great price. Buy it! It is a steal for the price!

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I wanted a back up Amp Head to my aging and fragile 1980's Marshall Mosfet 100 Watt Lead that was light and easy to carry to performances in nightclubs and outdoor venues. This amp has enough power for a Blackstar 2X12 Cabinet miked through a PA and is very pedal friendly. I appreciate the simplicity of design and pre and power amp tube configuration. You can dial in the tone you need both clean and dirty, though you may feel the need to add reverb, tremolo and other effects to get to your nirvana. What is important to me is that the size and light weight and so far, the reliability to act either as a back up or main amp to power the American Deluxe 70th Anniversary Fender Tele, American Stratocaster and Faded Cherryburst Les Paul through a number of Boss Pedals. I purchased on sale through MF with a discount and couldn't be more please with the price. I don't think you will find another Tube Amp Head out there for the money that can provide the tones you need. Highly Recommended!

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've played VOX's, Fender's, Boogies', Orange's, Marshalls', etc. The head isn't heavy. I ran my Gibson SG Classic (P90's) into my Dunlop wah-Line6 m9(overdrive-delay-reverb) setup. That went into the head; I raw wired the head to a 12" Eminence speaker sitting in a cardboard box (matching cab isn't here yet). With gain-2, bass-6, mid-5, treble-8, volume-1, and presence-6 all I did was switch my scenes on the m9 to sound like Coldplay, SnowPatrol, SafetySuit, Anberlin, FlyLeaf, WCAR, and Explosions in the Sky. Light, versatile, takes pedals great, responds to pick attack like a VOX without losing its VOX light chime, can give you tones from light ambience to metalcore, and my 20H had the thick plastic switches like the 22H, instead of the thin metal flip switches. Turn the gain up and no need for pedals, and turning the volume up doesn't change the sound...just how many neighbors can hear you rockin' out.

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This is a great design. If you want classic Soldano gain sounds at a less than SuperDome volume this is the amp for you. It gets the power saturation that alot of these amateur reviewers have probably never experienced in a large setting at club volumes. It's not an SLO, and at the price did you really expect that? For Rockers who want to get close for a paultry sum of money this can't be beat. Doesn't have the 'complexity' of a boutique but it doesn't have the price tag either. And for you parents out there who's kid is trying to get you to buy them an SLO or a Mesa Recto, steer them this way. At least you won't have to mortgage the house to buy it. And that kind of power is NOT needed for practice or small gigs. This is the perfect Rock amp head for small venues.

Quality built and sound is very good. The only drawback is it does not have an effects loop so all your pedals must go in front of the unit. I do recommend it tho, as my pedals sound good in front.

the PERFECT transition from Solid State to Tube

                  By SXRXNRR

                  from Minneapolis

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

First off, I want to explain that I have been playing guitar off and on for many years. For more years than not I played solid state amps because that's what I could afford at that time. The day finally came where I went shopping for a tube amp. And I am a massive stickler for reading reviews, both professional and consumer/youtube. I narrow my choices down and head out to get some hands on time with my selections. After trying out several different heads ranging in price (had my doubts about the cheaper range), I narrowed it down to two choices. An Egnater 15W Tweaker and the JCA20H.

My very first concern when I just started to look in to tube amps was the fact that they seemed to be offered in MUCH lower wattage than solid state amps. Unless of course I wanted to sell my car to get a high wattage version. But I wondered, is 15W or 20W going to be loud enough for certain gigs. In a quick answer to that, yes. Both of these options are plenty loud and I have no problems keeping up with the volume of the drummer. You will do just fine in clubs/church if you gig there. If you gig bigger than that, then its going to get mic'd anyway, just like everyone else in the band. A little tid bit I learned about amp wattage. It works in multiples of 10. So in order to get twice as loud as my 20W amp, I would need a 200W amp or I would need 100W to be twice as loud as a 10W amp. So the volume difference between a 20W and a 50W is somewhat minimal. Not to mention, you can crank up a tube amp louder/farther and still get great sounds out of it, whereas a solid state amp would start to get muddy and sound like crap turned up to the same level.

So between these two amps. They both sounded amazing in my opinion. The clean, the crunch, and everything in between all sounded amazing. The main difference was the pricetag and even that wasn't a huge difference. Both had amazing reviews. So really it came down to sound. Which did I prefer. The JCA20H. I play blues/classic rock/metal. Straight out of the box with stock tubes the JCA20H will do 2 of those 3 insanely well. Warm, creamy tones that put solid states to shame. Where had this amp been all my life? About the heaviest you are going to get just playing with knobs is classic Van Halen (just an example). That was even playing through my Schecter with active EMG's. So you will need some assistance if you want any good metal sounds out of it. I happened to own an RP500 multi-effects pedal from Digitech so it was time to see what sort of metal tones I could find. To say the least, I was BLOWN AWAY once I dug my heels in with some various overdrives. I was getting sounds from Pantera to White Zombie to Slayer to Tool. Just crazy warm, smooth, perfect distortion. The RP500 was good on my solid state half-stack but nothing like this.

The other thing to consider is this amp does not have reverb built in, so if you want that (I assume you do), you will need an effect pedal of some sort. I am so freakin' impressed with this amp so far. I think I will throw some JJ tubes in that I bought along with this, because I hear the tone gets even better (how is that possible?). Also, my Fender Strat is a whole different world of amazing sound coming from this amp. I could not be happier. I will NEVER go back to solid-state.

Sound: A+++Simplicity: A+++Bang for the buck: A+++++++++++++++++++++ (this thing should cost WAY more than it does) Get one before they realize how much they could charge.
Not a lot of features but it works perfectly here. Just needs an on board reverb. But if you have pedals, no worries.
                  Build quality seems wonderful.
                  Coudn't rate this part higher.
