TASCAM

Combination handheld HD video recorder and linear PCM audio recorder.

The DR-V1HD is a combined HD Video Recorder and Linear PCM High-Quality Audio Recorder. TASCAM has long been among the top leaders in home and field recording for decades and has always been focused on creating easy-to-use, versatile products. TASCAM introduces yet another addition to this long-trusted tradition, providing a 180-degree rotating camera and microphone set at the top of the DR-V1HD along with specific feature sets and menu operations ("White Balance" features and still photography mode).

The DR-V1HD is encased in a sturdy and solid structure with an ergo dynamic design. TASCAM has continued their same sleek look as previously released handheld recorders and made sure to utilize rotary volume control for fine-tuned and quiet input level adjustments. The layout and controls were designed to decrease any unnecessary handling noise and produce stable filming operation.

Every detail was considered when TASCAM constructed the DR-V1HD. The mic placement structure was designed to rid any possible electrical noise and it records up to 24-bit/96k audio. TASCAM included their iconic "Variable-Speed-Audition," and offered the ability to link any audio file on the device to still photographs. The DR-V1HD supplies HDMI out and a standard 1/4-20" mount for use with a tripod. TASCAM has added a distinct and important new addition to their increasingly popular family of handheld/field recorders with the DR-V1HD.

Features

  • Both camera and microphones rotate at 180 degrees
  • Same high-quality audio standards as the rest of the TASCAM DR Series recorders
  • Same condenser microphones as the popular DR-2d
  • Rotary volume for fine-tuned adjustments
  • VAS (Variable Speed Audition) function controls clip speed without changing audio pitch

I love this device. I use it in the studio to make quick recordings to see how I sound, and the audio quality is excellent, plus the video gives me important info regarding which guitar or mic I am using so I have a record of my setup. However, it uses batteries quickly, which wouldn't be a problem if it had a rechargeble battery (like an iPod), but it uses 3 AA batteries. You can buy your own rechargeble batteries and/or AC adapter, but in this day and age this sort of device should have a built-in battery and come with an adapter. Other than issue it is a great little device, and I absolutely love it.

Got this for 50% of the current price during Stupid Deal of the Day because I liked the idea of getting nice stereo sound with HD video. The only thing HD about the video is the 16:9 aspect ratio that you get. The picture is really bad and grainy especially in low light. It doesn't come with an AC adapter and it eats batteries like mad! The Tascam adapter is pretty expensive but I found one with the same specs online for half that. The included card gets you about 20 minutes of HD so you definitely have to buy another one of those too. The file format is also not compatible with my current video processing program so I had to switch that too. The sound is good and it was really cheap so I am going to keep it but I would return it in a second if I had paid the current price.

Great video and good sound recordings for such a small unit. For the technology challenged the set up instructions were a little confusing. After set-up the unit is simple to use.

I use this to record bands live from my mix position. I didn't need the video function of the unit. The sound quality is great and gives an accurate rep. of what I am hearing. Great to check my mixes at a later time. Nice small pocket recorder.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

I purchased this as a "stupid deal of the day". My ten year old son was showing an interest in videography, so I bought the DR-V1HD as a tool to aid in that quest. The video quality is grainy in lower light situations and the navigation could stand improvement. I'm sticking with my Zoom Q3HD. The audio recording quality is good, but there again, I choose the Zoom.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

I purchased this because i run sound for local bands and offer lights also. I do not offer video but figured it might be nice to offer something in video that would be sufficient to load up to FB or similar. This is not a pro level item, it doesn't have great sound or video, it goes through batteries like crazy BUT what do you expect in this price range? I nabbed this one on the Stupid Deal of the Day at such a ridiculous price, it is nice just to keep in my bag of tricks for those special moments. The sound is fine if you avoid the internal speakers. Good little unit -might not pay full price for one though.

This actually works pretty well, contrary to some negative complaints. I was surprised by the quality of the video and audio. I say this because the viewing screen is difficult to see, even with the subject fairly well lit. It showed up on "Stupid Deal of the Day" for 99.99....that's a fair price for this but I wouldn't pay more.

I was excited to get this unit. It's acceptable for recording stereo audio. However...

              1. My batteries seem to last 20 to 30 minutes tops.
              2. 2G is good for 20 minutes of HD video in stereo.
              3. Taking video in dimly lit bar stage is the worst. I had much better videos on my smart phone and excellent videos on an iPad.

Don't waste your money like I did! ...very disappointed with TASCAM.

When I'm looking at equipment I always find the youtube videos very helpful so, I thought I'd post one for others looking at this product.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

i feel compelled to review this device due to the multiple negative reviews.
at nearly 60 i decided to pick up playing drums
again which i quit at about 15.
i bought this on the stupid deal
                      to record my sessions.
i had been using my camcorder, which i found
                      unsatisfactory for audio.
this device filled that need, with very good
                      audio.
one needs to take the time to delve into the
settings to find the proper setups.
                      it isn't a user friendly device,but will
                      reward the non lazy.
the video is acceptable, but this device
is for audio,if you're looking for a cheap
                      camcorder,look elsewhere.
                      of the various complaints
                      1. it is hardly rare for one to need to buy
                      a memory card.
2 batteries-i use rechargeable batteries in all
devices i own that need batteries.
                      i have a powerex recharger,and powerex batteries.
you do need well charged batteries.
i get 2 1 hour sessions out of the batteries.
                      a semi legitimate complaint.
3.you can record audio, and video at the same time.
another person who didn't take the time to
learn how to use the device.
this is an an excellent device, and i highly
recommend it,for the stupid deal price, not at full price
                      though.
