Zoom

Brilliant stereo recording in your pocket.

Don't let its size fool you. The H1 Handy Recorder has Zoom's renowned recording technology and studio-quality microphones in their easiest, most portable device ever.

Now Zoom recording technology is available to everyone. And with an infinite variety of applications, you'll want to take your H1 everywhere. From musical performances, songwriting sessions and rehearsals to seminars, conferences, journalism or capturing audio for video, the H1 gives you clean, clear stereo sound effortlessly.

What sets Zoom apart?
Like all Zoom recorders, the H1's onboard microphones are configured in an X/Y pattern, for stunning stereo imaging. Because both mics are arranged on the same axis, they are equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is great stereo recordings with natural depth and accurate imaging.

Under your thumb
With its newly designed user interface, the H1 is also Zoom's easiest recorder to use. All its functions are at your fingertips, such as track marker, auto record, low cut filter, level and volume controls with on-board buttons No menus required.

Intuitive controls make it easy to capture the audio you need with ease. But Zoom still provides the versatility you've come to expect. So you get total recording format flexibility from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/96 kHz WAV, or MP3 from 48 kbps to 320 kbps and enough tools onboard to make impeccable recordings.

Everything you need to get started recording is included. Your H1 comes with an AA battery for 10 hours of operation and a 2 GB microSD card.

In addition, an H1 accessory package (APH-1) is also available (see sku # H70260) with an array of accessories that make your recordings even more pristine and easier to capture. The accessory kit includes a windscreen, AC adapter (USB type), USB cable, adjustable tripod stand, padded-shell case and a mic clip adapter.

Combining powerful recording capability with elegance and simplicity, the H1 Handy Recorder is our smallest, most affordable recorder ever.

I would not buy it again. In fact, this is the 2nd and last product I'll ever buy from this company.
I've owned one of these for a while, and used it for dozens of interviews. The sound quality is good, and I like the XY pattern but there are few pretty big flaws that prevent me from giving it a better rating.

    1. TONS of noise from just holding it. They didn't do any work at all to insulate the case, so you need to hold it very carefully, or put it on the desk. And then why not just use a USB mic?
    2. Must be used with optional wind screen. Otherwise it picks up plosives and every passing light breeze.
    3. No setting to record in mono, so you need to do that in post. Which is no biggie, but still.
Cheap plastic. I was hoping that the optional kit with a screw-on mic stand attachment would help the noise problem from holding it, but it's also cheap plastic, and transmits sound to the mic very efficiently. Bad.
It is only $99, which is cheap.

I bought the ZOOM H1 for field recording for my business. Bottom-line, the sound was horrible. Lots of clicks and pops throughout the audio tracks. I wonder how this has gotten good reviews. I find the product to fall well short of my expectations. Unfortunately, I didn't try it until it was past 30 days so I can't return it now.

          Great Alternative To USB Soundcard

Comments about Zoom H1 Handy Recorder:

This product is a great alternative to all those chords and wires of the USB interface soundcard. Just import the vocals / Instruments from sd card to DAW. Don't need expensive microphone / Interface. Only downside , don't keep battery inside of it after use. It will drain it. At least for me , it does. Also , put input volume down , it's very sensitive to sound.

          REGRETS

          By Jerry

          from Lyndeborough, NH

          Verified Buyer

Comments about Zoom H1 Handy Recorder:

When I phoned to order the ZOOM H-4, the salesman asked me what uses I would make of it (recording voice lessons and rehearsals)and told me that I didn't need so high-powered a recorder and recommended the H-1 instead. I was pleased by the lower price. But now that I've (managed to) set up the H-1 ZOOM, I find it inferior in quality of sound to the OLYMPUS digital voice recorder (VN-5200PC) upon which I was trying to improve. So I am now sorry to have been persuaded to buy the cheaper recorder and wish I weren't stuck with it.

Comments about Zoom H1 Handy Recorder:

It is poorly constructed. When recording, almost any movement of the hand will be picked up. Forget about hand-held recording (unless you're really not fussy about noise); you'd need to set it down on a surface that was guaranteed not to be touched or bumped, such is the propensity for exterior noise to come into the recording.
It's useful for home recording when you don't want to set up your entire rig. You might just want to hit record and then jam for a while. The input level adjustment is handy, but the higher the level, the greater the problems mentioned above.
Sound quality: quite good. You can set the recording quality for a wide range: the better the quality, the less recording time you get. With a 32gb card, it should not be a problem.
It is easy to use. I've only been on it for an hour or so, and I can do everything. It downloads to my iMac with no issues; the computer just reads it as an external drive (which it becomes, when loading to the computer) and you can copy and save wherever. I imagine PC would be as effortless.
It's just the construction that gets me. They must do better next time.

Comments about Zoom H1 Handy Recorder:

They must fix the dreadful onboard speaker. It cannot be heard under most conditions. If I had known it was this bad I would have opted for another unit, possibly the Hn2. The quality of the headphone plugin is very nice.

Comments about Zoom H1 Handy Recorder:

I use the zoom for recording song snippets I don't want to forget, class lectures, personal sound archive samples, and really anything.
This little guy turns on plenty quick in my opinion (about 4s). The USB data transfer works like a charm, and play back is great too.
The only thing to watch out for is handling it during recording - you'll get major storm-sounds during your recording.
You can't expect a studio condenser mic sound, but it really does deliver incredible sound across low and high frequencies.

I've been using the H1 Handy to record some songs at home, the sound quality is excellent except when trying to use this as a USB mic. There is a popping sound that only shows up when recording via USB. It's much better to record the songs and then transfer the files afterwards. Overall the quality and ease of use are awesome.
