3,000 piano samples from Alicia's Yamaha C3 Neo used on the Element of Freedom album.

With ALICIA'S KEYS, Native Instruments has unlocked the door to the R&B chanteuse's studio. The rich piano samples included in this sound library were created from her own playing, recorded in her personal studio in collaboration with her trusted engineer, Ann Mincieli. Together with Mincieli, Danish sample specialist Thomas Skarbye (also known by his company name Scarbee) and impulse response expert Ernest Cholakis, Alicia Keys has created a virtual piano that embodies the soulful, passionate sound that's become her trademark. Add this virtual piano to your studio and Alicia's distinguished playing will grace your next composition.

ALICIA's KEYS' instrument samples come from the artist's very own Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano. This unique and hallowed instrument was built to celebrate Yamaha's 100th anniversary in 2002 and represents the very top of the Conservatory Collection line. The exquisite and unique sound of the C3 Neo were painstakingly captured by Thomas Skarbye, KONTAKT script wizard Nils Liberg, and Grammy-award winning engineer Ann Mincieli—making these exclusive Yamaha piano samples available to everyone. Using vintage microphones and preamps and through detailed analysis of Alicia's playing, the team succeeded in capturing the warm, soulful, and inspiring sound of the Yamaha C3 Neo piano all the way down to the finest nuances.

Great effort was put into making the ALICIA'S KEYS virtual piano as authentic as possible. Designed with incredible precision, and incorporating subtle details such as mechanical release noises, a specially developed sympathetic resonance and release system, and even the sound of fingers hitting keys (optional), this unique virtual instrument software delivers plenty of lively realism. So much in fact, that Alicia Keys herself used it exclusively on her latest album "The Element of Freedom."

If you are looking for a piano that works with ALL musical genres and no one could ever tell it is not REAL... This is the one.
Too good to be true. But it sounds real.

Comments about Native Instruments Alicia's Keys Virtual Piano:

I own numerous sample based virtual pianos (hardware and software). By far this is one of my favorites. The attention to detail in faithfully reproducing even the most subtle nuances shines through. I found the reverberation effects to be quite nice as well. I encountered no difficulties what so ever in integrating into my system...both using standalone via Kontakt player and as an AU plugin on my macbook (Mainstage 3). No issues with latency across multiple drivers and midi keyboard controllers running on dual core 2.53 G processor.

              B-E-A-utiful!

              By Chris Gill

              from Wichita, KS

Comments about Native Instruments Alicia's Keys Virtual Piano:

I have 2 midi controllers that I use; one that has 88 fully weighted keys and one that's just a 49 key, synth action board. When I close my eyes with the 88 key controller, it's easy to imagine playing a full grand piano. The thing that really surprised me was that I got the same feeling from my 49 key synth controller! If that isn't a testament to how full and rich the sound is, I don't know what is!

One more little note before I wrap this up. I'm running Alicia's Keys on a 2.4gHz Dual Core Mac Mini and haven't had a single problem with CPU usage. Even when running it through my DAW (Presonus Studio One Pro 2) I've never experienced any performance issues.
The overall sound is perfect because of it's imperfection. Anyone who's ever spent time with an acoustic piano knows that even a 'perfectly' tuned piano starts to sound 'out of tune' the lower or higher you go on the keyboard. I don't know all the technical reasons for this, but I've played digital stage pianos that don't sound quite right and I always end up figuring that it's because the notes are perfectly stepped from one another. They don't have that harmonic resonance you get from the real thing. The sampled pedal and key noise is exquisite. I was recording an artist who said to me, "WOW! I don't know what it is, but I keep thinking I'm playing a real piano!" Then I turned off the 'noise' and she said, "I don't know why, but it doesn't feel as real anymore." When she came back into the control booth and I showed her that she was actually playing through a software program she couldn't believe it! I typically don't use the convolution reverb (since I like to run all my tracks through the same verb send), but it sounds amazing as well! It's a wonderful tool to have when running in stand alone mode. Having a nice Hall verb really gives you the feeling of writing your music on a Yamaha C3 Neo that just happens to be sitting on a renowned concert hall stage.
Since the overall sample library size is somewhere around 7.5GB, this is a box only software release. I've never had any issues with this or any other Native Instrument product and I own several.
It seems to me that this particular piano sound is geared toward R&B and mellower type music. I'm not saying that it couldn't be used for other genres or styles, but I think NI has other virtual pianos that have more of that tight, pop sound that a lot of people are looking for. This piano has a darker sound. I'm sure you could use EQ to get more top end, but in my opinion, it takes away from the natural tonality of the piano.

Yes it's only 1 piano sample for $100 but when you consider the level of detail that went in to sampling this beautiful Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, I think you'l find the price MORE than reasonable.
