Crown

Lightweight, comfortable, and noise-cancelling.

The CM-311A is the latest version of the Crowns proprietary Differoid technology. Differoid stands for differential cardioid. Its cardioid pickup pattern rejects sounds from the rear, such as floor monitors. Its noise-canceling ability also rejects sounds at a distance, such as instruments on stage and crowd noise. This results in the CROWN CM-311 having outstanding gain-before-feedback and isolation. Controlled field tests showed that the Differoid provides up to 12 dB more gain before feedback than conventional cardioid microphones. Many users of the Differoid say that their house mix is better because the mic’s isolation is nearly complete.

Designed for touring and live-sound applications, the Crown CM-311A is a rugged head-worn microphone with unequalled performance. It sounds like the best handheld microphones full, clear, and distortion-free, even with the loudest singers. Lightweight and comfortable, the mics headband and boom adjust to fit any singer. An included pop filter greatly reduces breath noise and pops. Because of the booms unique behind-the-ear design, it does not cover up the singers face.

Comments about Crown CM311 Headworn Condenser Mic:

Great sounding mic high quality condenser. My only problem with this mic is where the mic attaches. The plastic housing is real fragile and will break easily. It will not survive any kind of drop or stress the mic's plastic housing will break. I am surprised at this poor design and quality, because every Crown product I have bought has been bullet proof. The hard plastic storage case it comes in is pain for storage and has no padding period. I was able to repair mine with JB Weld the original stuff. It is now stronger than ever. I would not buy this mic again.

Comments about Crown CM311 Headworn Condenser Mic:

I'm the singer/drummer in a four-piece garage band playing classic and contemporary rock. I had a good-not-great headset whose condenser was underpowered and couldn't cut through the mix.

Frankly, I looked for what Justin Bieber uses (just because he's the one singer who came to mind using a headset), found the Crown 311 wired unit and did my research. Though a bit pricey, I took a leap - and haven't looked back.

The sound immediately proved the price worth the investment. It cut through the mix and revealed depth and tonality that my now-back-up headset just couldn't deliver.

My only complaint is that the mic needs to be almost if not touching the lips to get the best sound, and the "boom" on which the mic lives cannot be anchored in that position. So when it strays, I've developed a deliberate and visible twitch to shake it back to my lips (you'll sometimes see singers with this mic touching the boom to put it back into place). I'd like to fix that, but if that's the only issue, it's one I can live with.

PS: I swear the mic is the ONLY thing I have in common with The Biebs (maybe I'm more like Phil Collins), and I promise not to spit on fans, race a rented Ferrari down Miami Beach, or generally be a jerk.

Comments about Crown CM311 Headworn Condenser Mic:

My only beef was that I wish I would have known more about the repairs that this mic needed when I bought it. I could have facilitated a quicker turn around time from the workbench to the stage, but you know what? Putting this mic back together was a VERY cool project. I've ALWAYS had good experiences with Musician's Friend and this purchase was no exception! They say all good things come to those who wait... The time it took for me to get this mic up and running was well worth the wait! It's an awesome mic (even if people say I look like Madonna) and I have no regrets whatsoever! The wife grounded me from using my credit card though... It was so worth it!!!

Comments about Crown CM311 Headworn Condenser Mic:

I bought this as a used item. I rarely buy used gear but I needed a new mic and I've always had my eye on this model. The value was great and it shipped directly to my door (duties and taxes paid) here in the Philippines, so that was another reason why I decided to buy it.

The condition listed was 4 (needs repair). My ONLY beef was that the listing could have been a bit more specific as to what kind(s) of repairs it needs. I had to find out the long way and thus, have to buy the parts to fix it. It'll be a few more weeks before I can actually use it because I still need to buy a wireless transmitter and receiver that is compatible.

It sounds like I'm complaining but I'm not! I thought all of this would be a pain but not in the least! I'm actually ENJOYING this project. I've been in contact with Crown Audio and Shure in putting this back in working/roadworthy order. Both companies have been VERY patient, cooperative, and accommodating. I can hardly wait to get this mic working! It's taking A LOT of hurry up and wait as well as elbow grease, but like I said, this is frigging awesome!

Comments about Crown CM311 Headworn Condenser Mic:

I am a profession drummer and percussionist. While playing drums I use the hardwired Crown CM311 and a wireless one when playing percussions as I move around a lot during performances. I've used Countryman and AT wireless mics before and the Crown is the most versatile of the three. Much less distortion than the AT with less feedback problems than the Countryman, although I think the Countryman mic sounds a little bit clearer. I was first aware of the Crown CM311 when I saw Michael Jackson using one but decided to buy one after seeing Garth Brooks using one. What impressed me is that there was a bank of floor monitors the whole length of the stage and Garth was leaning right into them with no feedback problems. These are very good mics but the few problems that I have with them is when I sing loud there can be some distortion. I've fixed that problem by using the pad on the PA for my wireless and I use a inline attenuator (AT8202)for my hardwired Crown. Using the pop filter also helps. The only other problem is working the mic. As with all head-worn mics, it is hard to back off the mic when necessary. I also handled that problem with my inline attenuator that, with a click of a switch, allows me to turn my hardwired Crown mic down an additional -10 or -20 dB's. With the wireless I run a A/B footswitch from the receiver and run to two channels on the board both set the same except one set for lead vocals and another set for background vocals. I know that these ideas calls for extra equipment and setup time but if you're going to use any head-worn mic these are ideas you can use if there are problems. For me, with these ideas and proper eq, the Crown CM311 can sound as good as any dynamic hardwired mic.

Comments about Crown CM311 Headworn Condenser Mic:

Do not try to use this product unless your band has its stage volume well under control, OR you are using in-ear monitors. Not suited to heavy rock music. And the high end reproduction is also kind of muddy, so I found that when I was really belting, there was a little distortion.
