Mostly good, some drawbacks

Comments about Shure P4HW Hardwired Bodypack for PSM 400 Systems:

I have been using the Shure P4HW hardwired bodypack for about 3 years, and I am a bassist that gigs once or twice a week. It does the job, has more than enough power and has a few interesting features. The main downside is that the pack is hardwired, cannot be disconnected, and not very durable. The weight of the wire is causing it to pull away and disconnect from the pack. My attempt to fix it with electrical tape worked for a few weeks, but the wires are exposed again. Because of this, I'll likely upgrade to the P4R.

I really wanted this to work!

Comments about Shure P4HW Hardwired Bodypack for PSM 400 Systems:

On the face of it, the P4HW is a great concept. As a drummer wanting in-ear monitors the idea of a cabled headphone amp was perfect. There are certainly other ways of doing it, but a single channel device with a belt clip was perfect. And the promise of Shure quality made it a slam-dunk.Or so I thought. Upon receiving the unit I was impressed with the plastic hard case, but when I opend the case the disappointment began. The P4HW unit itself seems rather cheaply made. The knobs all have a great deal of drag when you turn them and the fit and finish is more like a cheap Chinese toy than a serious pro stage device. Then when I plugged it in, things went from bad to worse. The unit itself creates an incredible amount of audible hiss. If I plug my 'phones directly into the mixer the hiss completely goes away. Unplugging the P4HW from the mixer and just turning it causes the hiss. Given that the monitor signal is flattened out a good bit by the unit, the hiss is all that more annoying. And don't even think about using the high frequency boost!I expected a whole lot more from Shure, and at this price the poor quality is totally unacceptable; it's going back.
