OVERVIEW

Value on a limited budget.

Made out of fine metals for superior tone production, the Etude EAS-100 is the perfect instrument for starting out on the alto saxophone. The keywork, pads, and adjustment all work together to make tone production easier, more consistent, and stronger. And the bell brace and construction help make it as durable as possible. Includes case, mouthpiece, cap, and ligature.

It may be tempting to buy a "better" horn used, but saxophones are mechanically complex, and if the horn is not well regulated and set up properly, it will be extremely difficult for a student to play. It is perhaps advisable then for a new student to get an Etude EAS-100, brand new, set up perfectly, and ready to play right out of the case. It will be shiny and beautiful, and your young saxophonist will jump up and down and squeal when he or she sees it. Pride of ownership inspires practice, and practice leads to success.

Etude believes believe that price should not be a barrier to experiencing the growth and joy that comes from making music. That’s why Etude offers you five of the most popular woodwind and brass instruments at an incredible price: flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, and trombone. And no matter which you choose, you get a great design and outstanding construction that will give you years of musical enjoyment. See for yourself!

I bought this for my daughter, who just started her first year of middle school band. After renting a Jupiter alto sax for fifty a month from the company reps that the school had invited, I immediately decided that six hundred a year was too much to pay and went ahead and bought this Etude with accessories for half that price (not to mention that we'd own it). I was a bit worried that buying the cheapest sax available might be a waste of money, but on the other hand, my daughter may not stick with band long enough to make a $1300 sax worth it.
It arrived within 2 days, and we were impressed with the quality of the case but also the light weight (good for my daughter, who only weighs 65 lbs!). The sax is very pretty and has some light etched decorations on it.
She had been struggling with producing enough force and air to hold a consistent note with the Jupiter, but this one she picked up and was able to play several notes easily with one breath. It seems 10x easier to play. I (never having played a sax before), was able to produce a smooth sound and play some barely acceptable form of a scale.
The only complaint is that the pieces fit very snugly together, which makes it difficult for my daughter to get apart. I'm sure this is something that is an easy fix.
Hopefully this sax will hold up at least for a few years until I know she is going to stick with it and can justify buying a more expensive one. If not, it seems that I still saved three hundred during the first year of band just by purchasing this one instead of renting the Jupiter.

We have had our's for a little more than two years and in that short time it has become, as my daughter says, "a piece of junk."

My daughter so badly wanted to join band and, of course, chose the most expensive instrument. We talked to a couple of area music stores on band night, but we just could not afford the price they offered. We were considering a used instrument when my wife found the Etude alto sax.

The saxophone looked and played great straight out of the box. I really thought we had found the best deal and even told some of my friends that they had been snookered by paying the regular price at the music store. Then, two months after we got the saxophone, one of the metal pieces that cover the keys fell off.

The band director said he could not fix it and gave me the names of area instrument repair places.
Both of the local music stores where I took the saxophone said they would not fix it because they could not locate repair parts for the horn. I finally took it to a local independent repair guy. He got it fixed but warned me that saxophone might have a short life span.

Two months later, some of the plastic pieces on the keys started to fall off and my daughter complained that it was hard to play. I took it back to the repair guy and had to wait about a week. About two more months went by and my daughter said it was playing funny again. I questioned the repairman about this and he said that some of the keys on the saxophone had bent just enough that it was leaking. Another repair bill...

Our second year started out fine. Then my daughter took it outside so the junior high could practice with the high school marching band. Somehow, the saxophone came off the strap and fell. It would not play at all. My daughter came home in tears. The next day I took it to our repair guy and he said the "octave" key at the top of the saxophone and the neck had both been bent pretty good and that many of the keys had been knocked out of position. He fixed the keys and the neck...

The saxophone came back and played fine for about two days and then blah. I took it back and the repair guy agreed to fix it for free. This time, it played fine for almost a week. I was getting pretty frustrated and told the repair guy that we shouldn't have to bring it in so much. He was nice, but said we should get a better horn. So, I took the saxophone to a different repair shop about 40 minutes away. About a week later, my daughter brought the sax home, again in tears. It would not play and her band director was getting grumpy about it being gone so much.

I took it to a third place almost an hour away. They gave my daughter a different saxophone to play while her's was being fixed. The "loaner" saxophone -- a "Bundy," I think -- was definitely a lot older and not very pretty. But my daughter loved it. She said it was much easier to play. When the shop called to say her horn was finished, she did not want to give the loaner back.

Last week, the band director called to say that the horn was not working again and that my daughter was close to getting a zero in the class. It turns out the sax had been broken for several weeks and my daughter did not want to tell me. When I took it to the repair place, I noticed the gold finish on the sax was coming off. The repair guy said he would have to send the horn out to have the finish repaired and that it would be too expensive. He also got out a "Yamaha" and "Cannonball" and had me pull on the keys. Then I pulled on the keys on the Etude; they bent right away. He said that was why the saxophone was always needing repair.

I have now paid well more than the cost of the Etude in repairs. I thought about trading it in for a nicer saxophone, since my daughter used to love band, but both music stores say the Etude has no value and they do not want it. Now my daughter wants to quit playing.

Straight out of the box? It needs tuned. It squealed and did not play as well as I expected it to. Should have had soothing, warm, rich tones. It did not have this. Had a Bundy before that sounded MUCH better out of the box. Overall, for the price, its ok for a beginner student, after some tuning. I should have bought an intermediate, I guess, for myself.
