Perfect for Jazz, Rock, and Pop Playing!

The Harry Hartmann Carbon Series Fiberreeds use high-tech carbon fiber with hollow connecting fiber. The interweaving of the different fibers results in a very true feeling reed. The weave of the fibers is designed to emulate natural cane in ways that no other synthetic reed can. The Carbon fiberreeds reproduce the tendencies of natural cane to be very strong towards the outside (the bark) and more resonant yet not soft at the heart, while being very flexible at the vamp.

The result is a very full sound with direct response and a beaming upper register. The top choice of pop and jazz musicians.

      Features
      • Lasts 20-30 times longer than cane reeds
      • Play immediately, no soaking or break-in period
      • Extremely resistant to warping and splitting
      • Perfectly consistent
      • Never dries out
      • Easy to clean, resulting in a hygienic and odorless reed even after months of play

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I just wanted to update my previous review. I have tried the slightly harder version (Medium) with my Durga 8* MPC and the intonation issues are not as concerning. The characteristics are similar, but the medium seems more appropriate and is still easy to blow. Intonation is fairly sensitive still but not as much as when playing the medium soft. I am going to give it some more playing time and if it falls into my comfort zone for intonation it could be my next go-to reed for rock n roll. I should point out I am currently using Legere Signature med-soft which I also like a lot. They don't cut through as much as these carbon reeds but they have a more robust (less shrill) R&B sound.

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I like the resonate free playing feel of the reed and easy altissimo. That shows it has a lot of promise in this difficult world of synthetic reeds. It plays somewhat bright so is better for rock/RnB than jazz. What threw me off and was immediately noticable was pitch control. I generally use a semi-loose embourchure (tenor sax, Theo Wanne Druga 8*) and found myself pushing my mouthpiece in farther than normal to be intune with my normal embouchure because it played quite flat. I assume this is because the reed robustly holds itself away from the mouthpiece, whereas normal cane may sag slightly toward it (or is less springy... not sure). I have played a number of synthetic reeds and this is the first one with this problem enough to be a challenge. I did get more used to it by applying greater than normal embouchure pressure, but found it squirrelly to keep on pitch. I suspect I could get used to it eventually but the reed exagerates slight embouchure changes and will take some practice to play consistantly in tune with, especially since it seems to need a certain amount of additional pressure. It might be better with more closed mouthpiece facings. I also found my mouth tiring out a bit quicker trying to hold it in pitch. I played it through about an hour of rehearsal and found myself getting better at it, so it would probably pay off with more practice. I wish it behaved more like normal cane re the pitch control. To me that was the only downside, assuming you like the bright tone. Even so, I am going to order a medium (instead of MS) and see if that works any better for me.

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Tenor Saxophone Reed:

This has got to be the worst reed I've ever put on my mouthpiece! This reed has absolutely no heart to it. I've never seen a reed cut this way in all of my 40 years of playing, and I don't see how they think it would work. The cut is just straight across the reed scooping severely down from the stock to the tip with no heart what so ever. Most of the reed is the same thickness at the center as it is at the rails. As a result of the way the reed is cut, there's also no way at all to make adjustments. The reed is advertised as having "direct response, a full sound and a beaming upper register". My experience with this reed is quite the contrary - I can't even get it to play at all up into the left hand palm keys, let alone any altissimo. The sound of the reed is awful. There is no way you are going to get a full sound with a reed cut this way.

              I love this reed.

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Tenor Saxophone Reed:

The altissimo pops right out. It blows easy in all registers, but you need to be experienced to control the pitch. It really responds to the least little change in embrochure pressure. This reed is not for everybody. The jury is still out on how long it lasts.
My mouthpiece is quite open so I found that the med. soft worked best. It's probably about 2 in strength...maybe less. The altissimo pops right out. It blows easy in all registers, but you need to be experienced to control the pitch. It really responds to the least little change in embrochure pressure. This reed is not for everybody. The jury is still out on how long it lasts. I'm told the carbon fiber will last longer than the fibrecells I've been using. I can't tell if it has that cellophane-like membrane on the underside like the fibrecell. That's what usually finks out on me once moisture gets under it on the fibrecell. If this reed lasts like they say, I'll up the rating to a 10.

              Medium Soft

              By Trevor-vCIZe

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I have the medium soft, which is VERY loud, but extremely hard to control. The strength comparison chart isn't even close with this. Compared to a Vandoren 2, this feels like a 1. With a mouthpiece with a facing less than 8, it buzzes like crazy and is impossible to tune. With my 8, it is very clear, very loud, and easy to control. It still buzzy, which makes it not great for traditional jazz, but perfect in a rock context. It can keep up with a pretty loud drummer and cut through the mix.I really want to try the harder versions, but the price is a bit much.
