I have been playing the Jody Jazz HR on my alto for years primaily as lead in a Big Band setting. I wanted to upgrade to a larger tip opening and initially went from a 6M to a 7M. What a difference that made. Open, clear, clean, big and fat. Wonderful. I also tried an Otto Link metal mouthpiece having never played a metal mouthpiece on my alto. One blow on the Otto Link and I put it back in the box. No comparison to the Jody Jazz. The Otto Link felt restrictive and difficult to get air through. Too much work. Sent them back. I finally settled on the Jody Jazz 8M. Great response full range of horn. Great Altissimo. No problems with volume control. Free blowing, open, wonderful response, great projection. Pleasure to play.

I bought this piece about 3 months ago. I had been playing on a stock piece for 7 years and decided it was time for a change. This mouthpiece is ideal for the lead sax player who needs to project a bigger sound. I personally love this piece because of it's large chamber. It allows me to open up more and push more air through the horn which gives me that fat sexy sound that most professionals tend to have

The model I purchased is the 5M. This mouthpiece coupled with Vandoren ZZ 3 1/2 reeds on a Selmer Paris series 3 achieves a sound quite similar to Paul Desmond. The tone is overall quite mellow. Personally I would not describe this mouthpiece as very dark or very bright/edgy. But when desired can put out a considerable amount of punch.I would not recommend this mouthpiece to beginner players diving into the world of jazz. However I would STRONGLY encourage a seasoned player to give these mouthpieces a try, especially if they're looking for a Paul Desmond type sound. This piece is a work of art.
