Comments about Meyer G Series Tenor Sax Mouthpiece:

I decided to give this mouthpiece a try based on the mostly positive reviews. Calling customer service was not much help, so do your own research before purchasing. Tried it with my Yamaha Silver Custom Z tenor sax. It does blow very nice and has a full, mellow sound. Great for old school jazz/big band style. If you prefer more of the modern funk (think Tower of Power!) sound, forget about it! But the biggest problem I find is that it plays VERY sharp. It will take a lot of getting used too before I can decide if I can reasonably use this in any kind of ensemble. Won't rule it out because I haven't played with it enough yet to see what I can do to get the pitch right. Bought an old Meyer's 5 medium back in the seventies and loved it, was hoping for the same with this mouthpiece, oh well....

Great Potential

Comments about Meyer G Series Tenor Sax Mouthpiece:

I was initially disappointed with my Meyer G Series mouthpiece because it played very much like my regular Meyer (bright and buzzy). The baffle of the G Series has a slightly wider taper at the tip and the side rails are fatter (i.e. more elliptical) than the regular Meyer ? which makes it a very comfortable mouthpiece, but for a mouthpiece that?s supposed to have ?vintage? qualities, I didn?t notice much of a difference.I filed the facing (tip opening @ ~2.5 mm and lay @ ~23 mm) to match the dimensions of my Morgan HR and?oh, what a difference. The mouthpiece became much more open, responsive in the lower register and had greatly improved subtones ? qualities that I associate with ?vintage? mouthpieces. With a little customized filing, this has become one of my favorite mouthpieces.
