Comments about Powell 505 Sonare Series Flute:
This flute is a beauty to behold. It has the French pointed arms (which adds to the price of the model 501, which is otherwise exactly the same), which for me was worth the extra cost. It took me about 6 hours to really find the "center" of tone on this flute. Once there, the highs are lovely and lows full. Overall, it produces a big, full, bright sound with little effort (if using proper breath support!). It's leans toward the bright and silvery, rather than warm and golden, which might make it better for use in bands than orchestras. But overall, this flute is exactly as described: perfect for intermediate level players/students, teachers and playing in community groups.
It doesn't utilize Powell's "modern scale" and that is most apparent on the mid-range notes from about B up through the E above it. But the flute is so responsive it's easy to adjust those tones to be in perfect tune. If you play in a professional symphony orchestra, you may want to invest the extra cost for the model 601 (plus it has solid silver body rather than the 505's silver plated nickel which might appoint it with a slightly warmer/more golden sound.) But you'd be giving up the French pointed arms, which the 601 does not offer. I prefer the physical beauty of this 505 over the 601, and for my uses I don't miss the modern scale.
Overall, I highly recommend this flute to the everyday player. Don't expect it to be a top-of-the-line handmade Powell and you won't be disappointed. It is effortless to play and, make no mistake: it is absolutely gorgeous to behold! It looks absolutely, completely like a Powell, thus making the pride of ownership factor extremely high.
