Comments about Vandoren Optimum Series Saxophone Ligatures:
This ligature is the best I've found. Like most professional musicians, I've played on many mouthpiece and ligature combinations. Some are good, some are lacking. The Optimum is the finest alto sax ligature I've ever used... and at this insane price, it should be.
Any saxophonist knows that the ligature is one piece of gear we install and adjust every time we play. The design and workmanship on the Optimum is superb and using it is a joy. The cage slides on the mouthpiece with ease and the single knurled adjustment knob is super smooth, comfortable to grip and simple to adjust. Tension is applied uniformly and directly to the reed. Fine alignment is easy and precise. This design is a huge improvement over the classic and often crude twin-screw ligature.
I particularly like the clean design and the beautiful fit and finish of this ligature -- a real professional look. The adjustment knob is on the bottom and doesn't intrude visually or physically. The plastic cap installs smoothly and securely.
As to the 3 included tone plates, changing these is a snap... if one reads the instructions. My choice is the standard plate #1 with longitudinal ribs that provide maximum contact with the reed surface. I tried all 3 plates multiple times. As an experienced jazzer, I find absolutely no difference in sound quality among them.
In my opinion, the Vandoren Optimum is a superior ligature and truly in a class by itself -- beautiful, exceptionally easy to use, and actually worth the extra money.
