Comments about Yamaha G3 Alto Saxophone Neck:
I play a silver YAS 62 II. The verdict is still out on whether the improvement in sound merits the cost of the G3 neck, since I've only been playing with it for about a week and a half, but I think after giving it a month's trial and then comparing to the G1 neck, I'll see a big difference.
When I ordered from MF, the product was on back-order. However, I was pleased to receive it much earlier than the projected delivery date. I also appreciate the free shipping with MF.
The G3 looks identical to the G1 neck that came with my horn, so the differences are internal. I had read many reviews and expected to hear a much greater difference in tone quality, but the main improvement over the G1 was more consistent intonation in the upper range and maybe a bit more fullness in the low C-B- Bb. I've only had the neck about 10 days, so I'm still assessing.
I was disappointed to receive the neck and find that the octave key on the top remained open at all times and necessitated a visit to the repair shop in another town for adjustment. To Musician's Friend's credit, they did tell me to send them an estimate on the repair and they would consider reimbursement, which wasn't an issue since there was no charge for the adjustment.
Upgraded necks in general seem a bit overpriced, but Musician's Friend did offer the best price (after applying a promotional discount).
