A humbucker soapbar? You bet!

Like the original single-coil soapbar design, the DiMarzio DP164 Deluxe 90 Soapbar Pickup has a unique sonic character. Some players consider Soapbars to be the best-sounding pickup ever made. Low notes were solid and not tubby; they had an almost piano tone quality. High notes were incredibly fat, all the way up the neck. DiMarzio thought it would be even cooler if it were humbucking. Much research and a patent application later, here it is, with the added ability to adjust the patented dual resonance coils for bass and treble balance, and four-conductor cable for coil-splitting and parallel sounds.

This is a very even-tempered pickup, with a fairly uniform frequency response, so it has a very round tone in the neck position and more biting bridge sound. Some of the very oldest single-coil soapbars had a very smooth treble roll off over 2500 cycles - that's why harmonics sounded so fat coming off of these pickups, and it's one of the things built into the DLX 90.

  • Recommended for neck and bridge positions.

Comments about DiMarzio DP164 Deluxe 90 Soapbar Pickup:

Changing bridge pickups on two guitars, one with p90 route, one humbucker. Compared to dimarzio air classic, this one has way more treble, and a very snappy attack, while the air classic is quite dark and bass-heavy, and somewhat weak. This dp164 has good bite and crunch, yet still has the mid and bass response of a humbucker. Having used real p90s for decades this is the closest sounding humbucker I've found to a p90. I was tired of the p90 hum! Very strat-like tone even with both coils in series, responsive.. clean and distorted both sound great, but distorted it will sound a lot thicker on the wound strings than a p90, no getting around that with any humbucker. Highs are sweet and not irritating, but articulate throughout the full range. Vintage output, but noticeably stronger than the air classic, I like this pickup much better overall.

Comments about DiMarzio DP164 Deluxe 90 Soapbar Pickup:

I put this in the bridge of my Washburn P290. I had to do very minimal routing to get it to fit where a p90 once was. It is not a hot pickup at all. It sounds very vintage. I wired it for coil splitting which is very useful. I wish I got a little hotter pickup, but this one is still good.
