This humidifier does what it is supposed to do. I own several humidifiers of different brands,I would say that they all do what they are supposed to do but, in a pinch this can be used as a soundhole plug also. The best soundhole plug by far is the Lute Hole. I have even made a few humidifiers that work very well, not real pretty but none the less they work. No matter what you use to humidify your instrument just do it, it's worth the effort to prevent damage. A hygometer is also a wothwhile investment I switch mine from instrument to instrument periodicly just to check the humidity levels in the case. In most cases the area that supports the neck creates an air dam between the neck and body and you really should use 2 humidifiers one in the headstock neck area and one in or very close to the soundhole area. Be very careful not to over humidify this can be as bad as not enough humidity. Just pay attention and check your instruments periodicly especially in dry weather times, use a hygrometer and, by far the best protection for your instrument is to keep it in the case when not in use.

I just got this so I can't really attest to how well it works yet. It fits in my Martin D-15 Limited Edition very well, though.**ONE THING!!!***I took my guitar to a tech to get it looked at right after I got it, and he said that a lot of times these Kyser soundhole humidifiers come with this stupid plastic ring thing just inside the outer flap. He said he doesn't know why they are there and that they're useless. So I took it off and it made it way easier to put it in the soundhole. Just a free tip. The plastic ring comes off and isn't necessary. Instructions didn't say a thing about it.

Simple and Effective

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

I have one of these for my Martin, my Taylor and my hand made classical. It is very simple to use if you use it correctly.First, take the dumb plastic ring off and throw it away. When you fill it, make sure you squeeze out ALL of the excess water and use a towel to dry the outside and the space in between the two side wings that will touch the soundhole. Only insert one of the wings on a dread sized guitar. If you buy the small one for a classical, both sides fit easily.I live in Central PA and I refresh the sponge about once each week in the winter. On very cold and dry weeks, I will also put a Planet Waves small instrument humidifier by the headstock to keep the neck properly humidified. The advantage of the Kyser is that you can use tap water. The Planet Waves requires distilled water.I have never had condensation buildup nor damage to the top. It installs very easily. My luthier recommended it and now some of my friends have switched over to the Kyser as well.It would get a 5 star rating if they ditched the dumb plastic ring.

Excellent humidifier if used correctly!

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

I use these in my guitars and have not experienced any problems. Make sure to squeeze out ALL the excess moisture so the sponge is DAMP...not wet, and be sure to dry it off outside completely especially between the flaps that hold it in the sound hole. It's my understanding that it DOESN'T work well with all finished (such as the ones with nitro finishes), but with gloss finishes on two different brand guitars, I've never experienced a problem.I also understand that the hard plastic ring is there only for shipping purposes (so says my luthier) so be sure to remove it before use so you don't scratch your guitar.Taylor's web site says to allow humidifiers to dry out before re-wetting or you can over-humidify the wood. Since this is a sound hole humidifier which humidifies the inside of the guitar, you might want to supplement with another type of humidifier near the headstock to humidify the fretboard.

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

I like the idea of this providing humidity to the guitar and not all over the case to. That said it did not work for my Taylor mini very well. It is to difficult to fit in the sound hole. The problem may not be with the product as they do list sound hole sizes. I assumed and well you know what happens when we assume. My bad. MF service was excellent as usual

      Great, but beware the ring!

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

Yes, this is a great humidifier at a reasonable price; and yes, the plastic ring is horrible. The ring might be intended to make a tighter seal, but it only served to make it more difficult to put in and take out of the soundhole. Furthermore, in the process, I put a ding in the edge of my beautiful taylor 810. (@#$^%#$@!)No mention of the ring in the instructions and no good reason to keep it, so ditch the ring asap.I have the skb clip-on type and the planet waves between-the-strings type, but I like the kyser soundhole type the best. I have about 4 of them now.I couldn't fit it in the soundhole of my baby taylor, however, so I use a different type for it.

I thought this was going to work well?

      By SgMaster-KGPc-

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

I bought this Kyser soundhole humidifier thinking that it was going to work well and save my acoustic from the 30% humidity in my house. Well, I was wrong. I did manage to take off the plastic ring that is of no value, but after two days of the humidifier in the guitar, I noticed water buildup on the top of the soundhole where the sides of the humidifier rests on the body. I wrung out the humidifier and tried again. Less than 5 hours later, the water was back. I now keep that humidifier in its plastic covering with the instructions awaiting return and have since been using a more efficient room humidifier and bought an Oasis Blue humidifier instead (Highly Recommended as better alternative)...Now I don't worry over the relative humidity in my house anymore. Be advised and watch out for this problem with the Kyser soundhole humidifier. I think any others, like the Planet Waves would work better too.

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

Throw away the stupid ring, and only insert one leg. There is no benefit from ''locking'' both legs in the soundhole. This will fit even guitars with smaller soundholes (like Martin 000-15s).The plastic locking ring will just scratch the soundhole...pitch it.I love these for travel (my house is humidified at 35% all the time).ljguitar

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

After years of experience you eventually learn the hard way. The long green humidifiers are no good. They hang in different positions when you case the guitar and put it away. Sometimes you can inflate the top one side or the other. A high bridge, high action on the first string, higher action on the sixth string. The wood wants to soak up water and the Keyser does this evenly. I live in New York, put it in one week out the other.
As for the ring, I've always left it in. You'll figure it out. The sponge get a little worn and shrinks after a couple seasons, they're cheap enough.

So many comments about throwing the plastic ring away before use. It was a little difficult to install the first time when I left the ring on, but I did get it installed. Easier the second time. I am in Arizona, and immediately noticed how much better my guitars sound after having this humidifier installed for a couple of days.

The only tricky thing is to get the right water level in the sponge so they don't drip. I soak them at the start of the season, squeeze them out and let them dry for a day. Put them in the guitars for 3 to 4 days then replenish the sponge with the equivalent a tablespoon of water. Wipe them off and put them back in the guitar. I have a guitar where the neck would move all over in winter and make it unplayable. Not no more!

The product works great here in the Northeast with the long winters and dry heat. The only thing you need to be aware of is when you hydrate the sponge inside the Keyser take a couple seconds to squeeze it out good and dry the outside off. Check every 4-5 days to see if it needs re-hydration. I've used these for years on all my guitars and they have all held up exceptionally well!

I have tried many methods to humidify my acoustics. Some failed miserably (dampit leaked in two of my guitars), some were fussy, etc. The lifeguard puts the moisture where you need it. I use them in cases and on guitars I leave out. They work well with minimal attention and you don't have to turn a simple task into a science project.

When my Martin got a crack in it, the luthier in Lawrence, KS did their best to fix her and sent me home with one of these Lifeguard humidifiers. That was about 5 years ago and it's still going strong! I've since moved from KS to the high Rockies of Colorado, where it is soo dry! I bought this extra to keep my Hummingbird safe from the dry elements. Fits snugly into the sound hole. Very well made! I've tried the others. Trust me - spend the extra 5-8 and get quality.

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

There are a few things that made me less than thrilled with these (I have two).
                                  1) measure your soundhole before ordering - they make 2 smaller sizes (classical and uke) but last I checked MF doesn't carry them.
                                  2) even with the right size, it's tricky to remove and replace - it's just flexible enough to get in and out but not by much.
                                  3) my first one has held up well but the second one I ordered came apart at the seam, exposing the sponge. It may have just dried out too much in storage, regardless MF service came through as they always do, they sent me a new one right away without question.
                                  On the other hand:
It works better than anything else I have tried - the current planet waves "sponge" ones simply don't hold enough water to work for more than a day. This one seems to have a similarly limited capacity but because it seals the soundhole it lasts several days, even more if you use a case humidifier of some sort (I use empty pill bottles with wet flower foam that I have punctured a few times). The hard plastic ring that other reviewers have referred to is essential to keeping it sealed and keeping the vinyl off any nitro or shellac finishes. If you have nothing but poly-coated acoustics you can remove it but you will lose some of the seal.
Also, because it seals so effectively the rest of the guitar gets little or no benefit - as I said, I would use a cheap homemade case humidifier in the accessory case or wrapped in a towel near the headstock to keep you fingerboard happy and the fret ends smooth. I haven't yet checked out the Nomad Music Humitar, it holds more water than the other sponge-types but does nothing to seal the soundhole.

You are to soak the item in water and place it in the guitar hole. But, they don't tell you how long to soak it, or if you are supposed to squeeze it out, or dry it off! Plus, there're no instructions on how to place it in the hole. Do you make sure that the plastic disc is inside or outside the hole?

I bought a damaged guitar with a top wood split probably caused from drying out. I bought the full sound hole type to humidify the box before repairs. Worked well.

Want to ruin your guitar? Use these things! I tried using them in my two new Martins, and after I had trouble installing them in the sound holes, I removed them to see if they had leaked water into the guitars. Both guitars had small puddles of water in them! And I had done a good job making sure the de-humdidifiers had been squeezed free of excessive water! Do not buy these guitar de-humidifiers, unless you want to ruin your guitars!
