OVERVIEW

Bring out your guitar's true voice.

Martin’s proprietary Nickel/Copper alloy blend wrap wire provides for a reduced pick attack and allows the guitar’s tonewoods to be heard, not overshadowed. It offers a uniquely mellow, yet crisp, sound. Martin’s wrap is a solid Nickel/Copper blend, not nickel-plated, meaning there is no chance for defects to allow for corrosion. Martin's proprietary wrap is naturally strong and corrosion-resistant, so much so that it has been used in the propeller of dreadnought battleships and various machinery and tooling applications.

As a person who performs 3 hour shows with their acoustic, I can vouch for the Martin Retro Strings. These strings hold their tone throughout the night, have never broken during any of my performances and have a better cost ratio than what I've been using. These are used on a Martin D-18 plugged in. The high, mid and low frequencies are all there and stay there all night. I also have come to prefer the feeling of the nickel as compared to the brass. The gauges of the custom light strings are a little more forgiving to the left hand too.

Have been playing since the early 60's, acoustic, electric and resonator. These strings are overly bright with unusual harmonics. If you are looking to make your guitar sound sorta like a bad resonator, I guess you would like these. They do not have the balance or tone of phosphor bronze. I guess they will be OK on my cigar box guitar. Strings are all in the user's taste. I don't care for the sound, You might.

remember how good guitars sounded on a lot of old records?..they had a fat tone..soft and not harsh....but loud....an even tone..with good projection.......thats how these strings sound....i couldn't believe how much i loved the new sound of my Martin with these strings....i am going to buy a boat load of them , in case they quit making them...i will never go back to bronze or phos. bronze....those string are for strummers..i am a picker.......

Comments about Martin MM11 Retro Series Custom Light Acoustic Guitar Strings:

Been playing acoustic guitar (6 string/12 string/CBG/Mandolin etc) for over 25 years. It also seems as though I have been searching for the perfect string set for just as long. I recieved a pack from a friend since he bought 2 packs of the Martin & Co Retro "MMII Custom Light Monel" and I have to say I've never played on a string that is this precise, clear and comfortable. I have no idea what "Monel Wound" is but it creates a frictionless playing surface on the string and between that and them being light gauge.....WOW! I normally use light gauge bronze wound and going to these Martins, the sound of my dreadnaught body guitar sounds amazing and revigorated with new life. There was no loss of low end or clarity from the mids and the highs just melt right into the lows. The comfort level of these strings is off the charts. Its the equivelent of sleeping on cardboard for decades, then getting a new pillowtop mattress. I have finally found my "perfect" string set.

Been playing various bronze strings for decades on my Martin OM - these Monel strings have a different and interesting sound. Also the timbre varies more than bronze as you move towards and away from the bridge. They seem to have a longer life for me and bend well too.

Comments about Martin MM11 Retro Series Custom Light Acoustic Guitar Strings:

With all due respect, I strongly disagree with the "most liked negative review". I've also been playing since the 1960's. I played professionally in the 70's. It's been said these strings will make your guitar sound like a bad resonator. I don't care at all for a resonator sound on anything other than a resonator guitar. If your guitar sounds like a resonator, you should probably consider a different choice of nut and saddle.
These strings give my guitars a warm sound with booming base. Not at all like a resonator...

Comments about Martin MM11 Retro Series Custom Light Acoustic Guitar Strings:

I received these yesterday. I was so excited to try them. So set out my tools to do the job. Took off the old Martin Phosphor/Bronze Med. gauge strings, cleaned the frets and neck. Started installing the new strings. I don't tighten them up to their true note until the strings have had a chance to "settle" in. All went OK until the low "A" string. It broke while tightening the tuning knob. I understand a high "E" breaking. But in the 43 years of playing this guitar, I have never had an "A" string break while installing. I've never really had an "A" string break or any of the lower notes on a guitar. I installed the old Phosphor/Bronze "A" string but one can definitely hear the difference.

Since Guitar Center was out of the usual Martin SP's I usually, I thought I'd try the "Retro" strings and was pleasantly surprised. Great tone and good longevity. Of course, since Musicians Friend has better price and service, I'm now buying the strings from them.
