The shipping was prompt and the packaging was well designed. Stage box and XLR connectors are clearly marked. I appreciated the color coded strands. I checked all the the connections to make sure they were functional and they were. The XLR's plugged in tightly. Overall, for the money, this 16x4 is an excellent purchase. I anticipate using the snake only on a limited basis. The only criticism I have is of the riveted stage box. It makes it more difficult to take the box apart and maintain. In summary, for light to moderate use, it is a great deal.

As with most gear you get what you pay for, but this included a headache and pain in the butt. I was excited once the package arrived and quickly attached the 16x4 snake to my mackie onyx mixer in the studio. Flipped on the mixer and tested it with my PA system to find the most obnoxious hum came out with no microphones plugged in. Obviously I was disappointed and sent the product back and requested a new one. Then once again excited when it arrived, but only to the same freaking issue. So rather than send back again me and our studio tech opened the connections and box to find out Pin 1 and Pin 3 connections where swapped. Basically the ground connection was wired wrong. This was on all 20 points on the box and 20 points on the cable ends. So after a long time of tedious soldering and correcting a problem that should not have occured in the first place I finally have a working snake. The order was shipped on January 30th and after sending back the first defective snake and then repairing the second defective snake I finally have a working snake as of March 27th.

This device is a waste of money. Do yourself the favor and drop an extra 100 on one made by a reputable manufacturer.

This Snake has horrible hum on all channels because pins 1 and 3 are swapped. To get around this you have to spend hours upon hours soldering both ends of each line.

I wish I would have read the reviews of others before making my purchase. Now I'm stuck with another project, when this purchase was intended to be the final touch on my previous project.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

I would not touch Musician's Friend wiring of any sort ever again. This snake has been nothing but trouble from the get go. Impossible to eliminate ground buzz. Thought I could save some money...unfortunately now I have to spend more to get it right. Other cables from Musician's friend have also failed on me quickly. In fact, I'm so angry with their quality I'll avoid doing business with this company from here on in.

      snake disappointing

      By Peter Miller

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

Out of the carton it is un-usable with my sound gear.
I just received this Musicina's Freind brand 50 ft 8 ch 4 return snake. I produce singer- songwriter coffeehouse shows in a room that seats 60 and wanted a snake for my gear- a Yamaha 8 channel mixer, QSC 1200 watt power amp for mains and subs. I've run this set-up for over five years problem free.

I have been simply using eight 50 ft xlr cables to the stage for vocal mikes, DI, keyboards, etc. As soon as I powered up this puppy I knew there was big problems. The buzz from every channel was crazy loud- some channels crackled terribly when I increased the gain. I treid every channel with a Shure SM 58 to see if it was isolated to one or more channels and found all of them were bad.

There are dimmer switches in the room and I was commiting a sound faux pas- running the power cord parallel to the snake . I moved the power cord to another outlet in another room no where near the snake, and made sure all the lights were off- no change at all. I went back to XLR cables and the sound is now crystal clear noise free and crackle free. I must assume the problem is in the snake. I could accept that some buzz or hum may be attributed to room conditions, but the crackling tells me there are poor connections on the cables, and this thing is brand new. I won't ever use this with my set up . Luckily I set up the night previous to the gig which gave me time to pull the snake out and run new cables to the stage.

I think the product is substandard and will be returning it. Extremely disappointed.
barnd new product obviously not well constructed
would have been good if it worked as expected.

Arrived in good condition, well packed. Strung it out on stage and powered up. Immediately got RF issues. Had to use my old snake. Checked out later and every channel had RF. Am packing it up and sending back. Appears to be a quality control issue with the manufacturer. Probably will not try it again. I could have switched and re-soldered leads but that's what I paid someone else to do.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

I bought this snake for use at our conference center. It sat in storage for a little over a year, and I just pulled it out the other to set up for a big group. As soon as I hooked it up to the mixer I got a terrible hum on every channel. I thought maybe I had some power line too close or something... tried separating lines, moved the box around... no effect. Finally I opened up the box and to my astonishment I found that the shield and signal grounds were revered on every lead... both ends!!! The shield was feeding directly into the signal. I had no choice but to re-solder every connection, because I needed the snake right away. What a waste of my time. There is no way that this was tested in the factory because it could not have worked in any circumstance as far as I can tell. Simple quality control would go a long way on this one.

First time we used it I thought there was some user error with newbie av helpers. But after I completely set it up correctly I discovered 5-7 channels were bad. We had used it once for 2 hrs and stored in tote by itself. I bought the snake because of the price. I was using it for church band & singers on stage. Would never recommend to anyone.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

It may be the snake for you but it wasn't for me. Not great but not bad.
The 8x4 Stage Snake was not a that bad in terms of the construction.

The inputs were riveted in so that was the deciding factor in returning it. I want something that I can get into "just in case".
It was larger than what I was looking for on my install. The box was twice the size that I wanted and there was a lot of wasted space that could have made it smaller.
Value wise it wasn't bad but the cable restraint on the box was plastic and cheap. It would not hold up to touring.

Returning it made the value not a great deal.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

I bought one of these Snakes a couple of years back. It was installed in a fixed venue. My first readings of reviews talked of the quality of the snake & the biggest problem was the connectors in the box end were always coming loose. I took a chance, got the snake, took the box apart, tightened all screws, then super glued threads. With all of this maintenance the screws still came loose allowing plug ends to fall into the box. I have basically left all cables attached to box until they go bad then replace them. If you can do this the price is not bad, but if you are a tear down P.A. company of any sort, I would recommend buying a Whirlwind Brand or comparable!!!!! I do still use snake but have intermittent problems from day to day. You will also find these problems w/musicians friend cables. Bought 10 & in 1 year only 2 left working.

I purchased the 12 channel 100 foot version to use for my working Rock Band. We play 3 gigs per month. After 10 months of continuous use, I have had no problems whatsoever. It performs exactly the way it was intended. We take care of it, and treat the connectors with care, but it does what it is supposed to do.I would recommend it.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

If you need a low priced stage snake, give this a go. Again, there are surly higher quality units out there, but for the price, this was just what I was looking for.
                  The unit has what's needed
I read a lot of reviews saying this was no good, but I took a chance anyway. I either got one of the good ones, or others just had bad luck. The unit worked just fine for me. I didn't have any trouble at all, and I think with some care, it should last a good while. I don't intend to use it too frequently, which is why I didn't really want to spemd 2 or 3 times what this one cost.
Hey, for the price, this was a good deal to me

We ordered one of these from MF for an install at my friend's listening room venue where we do 8-10 shows a year. After unpacking it and testing it, we found that there was a short somewhere in the snake. We sent it back. MF replaced it with another one and we got the same thing. Less noticeable, but still a short in the wiring. Sent that one back and got a Whirlwind instead. Guess what? The Whirlwind works perfectly. The price and quality of the Musicians Gear snake is too good to be true.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

I absolutely detest spending money when it is not necessary. In other words, paying for the brand name when you can get the same product from a non-brand name...so, I felt like Musician's Gear would fill the need.
However, in the case of this snake, I spent more money, time and aggravation going with a cheaper product than I would have had I upgraded in quality.

MusiciansFriend is awesome and they credited me for the defective items-professional, customer-service oriented.

My advice is to do as I will do in the future when it comes to cables. Pay for quality and save yourself a bunch of aggravation.
All ins/outs numbered, easy to read. Rigid box, appears it could handle some bumps.
                    No problem with features
Received it on Thursday and used it Friday night. 2 of 12 channels inoperable. Did not have time to troubleshoot so I used 2 other channels.
Not the quality I would expect and can live with.
I believe now I got less than I paid for. I would expect everything to work properly for at least the first few times of use. I know it is cheaply made, but to expect it to be 83% operational from the start?

Like the majority of others who have reviewed this snake, my problem was the same. Each and every send and return was mis-wired. The shield/ground and negative leads to pins 1 & 3 were reversed and had to be corrected for the snake to function properly. I have few complaints about the company up to now, however this appears to be a problem that musicians friend would prefer to ignore than correct. It is because of that this that I leave this review so others may be aware. (Caveat Emptor)

I've had to return 2 of these things back to back. The first one I had buzzed and hummed like there was a grounding issue in channels 1,3,5,& 6. After using it in 3 different mixers in 3 different locations it still buzzed, I sent it back. The second Was a little better it only buzzed on channels 1,4,& 5 but I bought it to use all 8 channels without the buzz. It has everything I'm looking for in a snake but I think I'm just going to save up and get one I try before I buy.

I just received my Musician's Gear 12x4 50 foot snake. I was concerned when I read the couple of reviews that mentioned shorting in channels, having problems with multiple snakes, that they are "toys" etc... I just got through testing all 16 cables in my snake and they tested out perfectly. No noise, shorting, etc... Looks like it's fairly well constructed to me. I'll report back if I find out otherwise down the road, but I'm not worried as of now.

Comments about Musician's Gear Stage Snake:

This is the second Musicians Gear product I've bought, the first being a microphone boom that was very good quality for the money, and so far I'm very pleased with it! Let me preface this review by saying that I AM NOT A TOURING PROFESSIONAL , I only use this snake in my basement to hook up a medium size PA and a couple of mics/instruments. When it first arrived, I was impressed by the packaging, it was very carefully prepared for shipment. I was also impressed by the heavy gauge metal for the box, the quality of the XLR connectors, the strain relief, and the labels on both box and fan. I promptly tested all 8 sends and 4 returns, and they were in working order. It appears that this product will stand up to the use I put it to, given the amount of money I spent: that's the reason I bought it, it was 3 times less money than a competitors product. The shipping, as is usual for MusiciansFriend, was FREE, and it arrived in a very short amount of time for a new product. I wouldn't be able to afford the PA (let alone any of my other music gear) that this snake is a part of if I had to pay the local music store prices or even buy online at other vendors. My congratulations to MusiciansFriend for making things like this available to customers like me!Bravo!
