In case you are unaware, Ruby does not actually make tubes. They package tubes from other manufacturers. The description describes this as a low gain Tesla. If you are looking for a low gain 12AX7, this is really not it. Ruby sells several 12AX7s and this is the higher gain of them. The lower gain versions are the Sino Chinese tubes from the Shuguang factory. This is a JJ branded Tesla from Slovakia. I've tried several tubes including the Russian EH and Sovteks and find the JJs to sound best and be most consistant. I've stopped wasting time and money tracking down vintage tubes and am very happy with the JJs for all of my bass and guitar amps. By the way, if you are going to buy a JJ, I think the Ruby is a better deal. As I said, it is a JJ in a Ruby box. It may be better than one in a JJ box because it is likely that Ruby pretests and picks only those that meet their standards. It is also cheaper. Go figure...

Good enough that I no longer feel the need to seek out vintage RCA, Raytheon, Philips, Telefunkens, etc.

I use these in my Hughes & Kettner units (BATT, Blues Master, Cream Machine & Metal Master) as well as my Fender Champion 600.
Great price for an excellent tube.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I just had to write a review on this tube. I bought it a while back to replace the stock pre-amp tube in my Marshall AVT 50 (2000 series).... The owner's manual for my Marshall stated over and over again, how great the factory installed tube is supposed to be. The gain structure was just too high, and turning the gain down made the amp sound too weak. I was just not able to get that full, vibrant, vintage tone. Until I installed the Ruby tube! Now,all is well. All of the rich harmonics are there. The full-bodied,robust sparkle now exudes from the amp. The gain structure and EQ are perfectly balanced. Even the reverb, which before was just,"so-so",is now comparable to any high-end reverb out there. If a much better sounding pre-amp tube is what you're looking for...GET THIS TUBE! You will be happy you did.
Best value and tone for the buck.

Called Musicians Friend and they sent me another tube and it was marked the same too. Inside the "Ruby" tube packaging was a "JJ" tube with a small sticker marked Ruby 12ax7. The tube was a JJ ECC83S.....again, called Musicians Friend to tell them they were selling a JJ labeled tube that was in a Ruby tube package.

The best tube is like the best color - it can be different for different people and everyone's right. I like a warm tone, full from the lows to the highs, with a "rounder," less harsh distortion. These tubes ended my search, and now I just play 'em. Good from rich jazz, through edgy blues, to pre-punk (think 1970's Stooges).

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I purchased the AC5 HG+ version of the Ruby 12AX7 for the V1 position in my Hughes & Kettner head (used a Ruby 7025 SS in V2), and it truly improved the sound over the stock tubes, with improved harmonics and more clarity in pick-attack. The sound improvement was CLEARLY noticable...which I didn't expect.

The Ruby's were my third and final choice, previously trying both Tung-Sol and Mullard reissues with unimpressive results on the overdrive. The Tung-Sol did sound a little sweeter on the clean channel, but I preferred the Ruby tubes for distortion...and that is what I'm playing 85% of the time.

Yes, as others here have mentioned, these are re-branded JJ tubes...but I dont think you can find a better quality, low-microphonic tube for the money. For me, a product rating is either "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down", based solely on if I would buy it again...and I would absolutely buy the Ruby tubes again!!

But as Dennis Miller used to say..."Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

Recently I purchased some 12AX7 Tung-Sols for an SL+ module for my Randall RM1250H. While they did breathe life back into the preamp, it was a bit TOO warm for what I hoped the module would do. So, I sent it to Jaded Faith Mods for a complete overhaul. The owner of the company made the suggestion that I try Ruby tubes instead for gain purposes. When I confirmed this with my cousin who has great experience with tubes he agreed, saying that Sovtek would probably be too noisy for my taste while Ruby was just noisy enough without being overbearing. They were both absolutely right. The Sl+ was converted into the "Bed of Nails #1" module (unofficially dubbed "The Marshall from Hell") & it sounded wonderful with the Tung-Sols still installed, but when I put the Ruby tubes in....the sound I was looking for began to present itself. The Jaded Faith "Bed of Nails #1," with the help of Ruby tubes, gives my Salvation Mods "Camerock" a run for its money (and that's saying a lot.)

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

Overall the Ruby Tube is what it says it is, which these days is refreshing. It is a sold at a good price and the quality of the product is apparent. I recommend this product
Since its a tube there are no bells and whistles, but fact is, installed in my low end mic pre-amp, it has upgraded the pre-amp. Clean, high gain, warm tone coming out of my microphones. It's walking the walk.
It appears to be well constructed and info from other reviews indicate that it has a good life expectancy. I have used it constantly over the last 2 weeks and it is holding up well.
I looked around at many options, top end-low end, bulk prices vs individual, and bottom line, it is a great deal.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

Ordered these tubes for my Engl Screamer. First thing I noticed was that the Tubes were made by JJ. The label on the Ruby Box had the number 12AX7ACZ-HG. The description from various websites states "Highest gain 12AX7, great for metal and hard rock. Selected high grade JJ ECC83", not really how they are described here on Musicians Friend.

The Engle Screamer is a 2 channel 4 mode amp that shares the EQ. These tubes helped to tame the piercing highs and made the clean channel much warmer, almost to warm. Missing some of the highs but it did help to balance the eq between the clean and lead channels. I can actually push the high and presence knobs past 12 o'clock. So I guess it made those tones knobs a little more usuable. I still would like to find a tube with 25% more of the highs that I lost.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I put this tube in my Marshall AVT275. Best thing I ever did for tone. The tube clean channel is much rounder sounding with a smoother breakup when pushed with a boost pedal or hot pick ups. The distortion channels are both improved with smoother mids and less squeal. I can crank up the volume and sustain for days with my hollowbody guitars. Overall, this tube lowered my amp's gain a little bit, but the improvement in tone was worth it. Changing the preamp tube in a Valvestate is very easy-took me ten minutes-no biasing or changes needed. Made my amp sound like a high dollar multi channel tube amp. All those "tone snobs" who say life begins with tube power amp distortion need to open their minds to what a tube buffered preamp does to a linear solid state power amp signal(big, heavy and fast bottom end, without tones of noise). The high gain sounds are beyond belief, especially stereo through a pair of 2x12 cabs. Thanks for valuable info-I'm a believer.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I just installed the Ruby Tubes ECC83 (12AX7A) into an ART Tube preamp (a cheap preamp with a Chinese 12AX7 standard equipment). The Ruby Tubes ECC83 turns the preamp into a quiet and beautiful sounding unit. The Chinese tube was harsh and noisy. The only negative comment about the Ruby Tube is it's low gain and it won't go to any significant level of distortion in the ART Tube preamp. It says in the description that it is low gain, and that is true. So if you want a tube to drive to heavy distortion, it won't do it in the ART preamp. For clean sound, the Ruby Tubes is a huge improvement. I'd recommend this tube to anybody who wants a better sound out of their 12AX7.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I decided to get these after reading that they are actually lower gain JJ/Tesla's. I have the high gain JJ's in one of my 100 watt tube heads and have always like the tone but I find that when I'm playing with high output pickups they are a bit harsh. I put these in the preamp of my Laney VH100, replacing the stock TAD's and there was a huge improvement right away. The clean is cleaner with a softer attack and the high gain channel is open and powerful but doesn't have the overly sharp peaks or fizziness I was getting. Still very punchy but in a smoother way. I would definately consider these if you have high output pickups and and a high wattage amp.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I've run soviet tubes for years...they are very tough and well made. I had some sovtek's in my Carvin X100-B with a 12AX7A in the first position and the B version in V2 (each side is drive) and V3 (I believe this is the phase retifier or whatever it's called...drives the EL34's or maybe it was the reverb and efeccts loop...been years since I read the manual. Anyway I replaced all of them with these 12AX7A's since they were probably over a decade old and MAN! It sounded good anyway but these are very clean and dynamic sounding with a balanced tone...not buzzy or harsh. Also put some in my Peavey Triumph PAG-60 (6L6 power stages) The clean channel bacame a whole new animal MUCH improved...I bought this amp used recently and can now say it was a good investment. Sounded kinda crappy but with these it's sounds almost as good as the Carvin (and for a Combo that's an accomplishment) This amp has higher gain on the drive channel...still sound great. Save your money it doesn't get any better than these all the way around in any position...if you have an old Marshal and NEED extra sizzle or breakup you might go with a cheaper russian or chinese in the drive stage but these would be my choice everywhere else and in most modern amps all the way around. With the money you save get GT power tubes (I like S9 rated...more dynamics less coloring or breakup...I like the dynamic tube power section compression but I like it clean) I'm so impressed with these that I may even try the rubi 6L6's since they are so much cheaper and have excellent reviews...I have nowhere to go but up...this is an older amp and the factory tubes suck/are dead sounding. VERY happy and got free shipping to boot! If you've been thinking your amp felt or may be sounding a little dead lately just buy a set of preamp tubes...you may find like I did you forgot how good it really sounded! These are at LEAST as good as the old premium low noise sorted 12AX7's from a decade ago. Buy em with confidence. Cheap price and top value/performance...far to rare these days.
