Comments about Zildjian Laminated Birch Heavy Drumsticks 3-Pack:

Drumsticks are so varied and are based so solely on individual preference that I hesiated to review it. So let me come at it from this angle:

This is my go-to drumstick. This drumstick is for someone who likes a long, skinny stick that gets it's weight(this stick is heavy) from density, not width.

It's the most comfortable stick I've played with, because it's almost exactly what I want.

It's heavy, durable, thin, long and has a pronounced ride ping due to it's small bead when it's new.

It has a good, clear cymbal sound while still having enough mass to move air well inside the drum.

Love it, but inconsistent.

About Me Experienced

Comments about Zildjian Laminated Birch Heavy Drumsticks 3-Pack:

When you get a good pair, laminated birch is absolutely incredible. It's durable, it's got great heft, huge attack. My first experience with laminated birch was in high school drumline--we picked up these sticks basically by accident. The rebound was incredible, they were so heavy that our chops got worked out like crazy. By the end of the year, we had the best snare line in my 4 years. I seriously attribute a large amount of that to the sticks.

So years went by, and I continually thought, "I wish I could find sticks like that for drumset." Lo and behold, I found the Mike Mangini Signature sticks by zildjian. Amazing sticks. Long and heavy. Awesome attack. For a long time, I would use them as practice sticks, and then switch to a hickory 5b for shows. You get so used to the weight of the lam-birch that hickory feels like nothing. But I got so tired of breaking sticks at shows that I just went laminated birch all the time.

Eventually, I resolved that I wanted a smaller stick that still felt heavy, so I went down to the 5A recently. It's shorter and thinner than the Mangini, has a rounder tip, and sounds more like a regular stick. Laminated birch tends to sound more like the butt end of a stick, because of its weight. The 5A is kind of in the middle. Definitely loving it.

CONS. There is really only one con, and that's product consistency with the birch. I have bought roughly 25 pairs of laminated birch sticks. About 2/3 of those were dark, way heavier, and almost oiled looking. The remaining 1/3 were lighter in color and weight, and dry looking. The dark sticks are what you want. Those are the ones that last a long, long time. The lighter ones are really no more durable than hickory sticks, and maybe even less so. They feel brittle, and they usually prove that they ARE brittle. I just bought a 3 pack of the 5A, and unfortunately they are all the lighter variety. I snapped a brand new stick 4 songs into a rehearsal. The dark ones, by contrast, last months.
