OVERVIEW

Compact pedal that offers you plenty of tone all in one knob-based interface.

Mobile, battery powered, and filled with a diverse selection of flagship-quality BOSS amps and effects, the ME-80 is the ideal compact tone processor for performing guitarists. A friendly knob-based interface makes it simple to dial in great sounds in seconds, while easily selectable operation modes offer the flexibility of individual stompbox-style on/off or instant recall of complex multi-effects setups. Unique new footswitches deliver twice the control of previous designs for efficient and intuitive effects switching, patch selection, and realtime sound shaping while playing on stage. The free BOSS TONE STUDIO software unlocks even more tonal possibilities, providing a cool graphical interface for tweaking and organizing sounds on your computer, plus a web connection to BOSS TONE CENTRAL for direct access to free gig-ready patches created by top pro guitarists and much more.

A Huge Selection of BOSS Effects in One Pedal
No matter what style you play, it's easy to craft your own personal sound with the ME-80's wide range of built-in effects. A complete history of gig-ready BOSS tone processing is at your command, from multiple overdrives and distortions to wahs, mod effects, pitch shifters, delays, and beyond. BOSS' groundbreaking Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology is represented with the unique, spacious ambience of Tera Echo and the distinctive tone-shaping possibilities of Overtone. Updated COSM preamps include new additions such as Crunch and Metal, plus an AC preamp designed for acoustic/electric guitar. The onboard expression pedal can be used for foot volume and pedal effects like wah, octave shift, and Freeze, and it's also possible to control effects parameters such as mod rate, delay oscillation, and more for expressive realtime sound shaping.

Instant Gratification with Dedicated Knobs
Unlike typical menu-driven multi-effects processors that are complicated and unintuitive, using the ME-80 is as easy as using a stompbox. Effects are organized into eight logical categories that can all be active at the same time. Seven categories contain multiple effects types to choose from, plus dedicated knobs for selecting a type and adjusting it with a set of parameters you'd find in the pedal version of the effect. The Pedal FX category has its own knob for quickly assigning a particular effects type or function to be controlled by foot with the expression pedal. With this familiar and friendly interface, you're able to dial up and play great tones instantly, just like using a large pedal board filled with your favorite stomps. But a major advantage over that pedal board is that you can to save all the current knob settings to one of the ME-80's 36 user patch locations, allowing you to recall custom effects configurations at the touch of a pedal.

Stompbox Immediacy or Multi-FX Power: You Decide
The hands-on experience that stomp box control provides is perfect for tweaking tones as you go. However, there are times when switching among an entire group of preset effects is more efficient, such as when you've set up complex tones for different songs. The flexible ME-80 supports either approach, giving you the best of worlds. In Manual mode, the categories function like individual stomp effects, with instant adjustment via the panel knobs and on/off control with dedicated footswitches. By entering Memory mode, seven footswitches are automatically reconfigured to select user or preset patches and patch banks, letting you recall complete multi-effects setups directly. One footswitch on the ME-80 is dedicated just for mode switching, so you can toggle between Manual and Memory modes any time you want, even in the middle of a song.

Footswitch Design Delivers Twice the Control
The ME-80 offers easy usability while performing, with eight multifunction footswitches for direct control of effects on/off, bank/patch selection, and mode switching, plus convenient access to alternate functions such as tap tempo, tuner, looped control, and more. A special control (CTL) function is also assignable in each patch, letting you toggle grouped effects on/off or adjust a specified parameter in real time. The newly developed footswitch style provides two switches in the space occupied by one in previous designs, allowing BOSS to equip the ME-80 with a generous array of foot-operated controls while keeping the unit extremely compact and mobile. In addition to the eight main footswitches, the expression pedal is equipped with an integrated toe switch that toggles between foot volume and the current Pedal FX setting.

USB Audio/MIDI Interface Built In
Via USB, you can connect to your computer and capture the output of the ME-80 directly into your favorite DAW to record pro tones with COSM preamps and effects. It's also possible to monitor the ME-80's effects sound while recording an unprocessed signal into a DAW track; after the fact, use the USB Loopback function to "re-amp" the dry track with the ME-80, tweaking the knobs as you listen to the song to capture the perfect tone. MIDI transfer over USB is also supported, allowing you to select ME-80 patches from your computer, send expression and control pedal data into your software, and swap patches via BOSS TONE STUDIO.

Edit and Organize Tones and Connect to the Web with BOSS TONE STUDIO
Available as a free download, the BOSS TONE STUDIO application provides an inviting graphical interface for tweaking the ME-80's effects from your Mac or Windows computer through USB. The software makes it easy to save, edit, and organize your patches, and to load them into the ME-80 as needed for different gigs and other applications. If your computer has Internet access, BOSS TONE STUDIO also provides an integrated connection to the BOSS TONE CENTRAL website, allowing you to preview and download gig-ready patches created by top guitar pros directly into your ME-80. In addition to expanding your palette of tones, these free patches provide solid foundations for creating your own patches with the ME-80's extensive array of effects.

I'm at a point with my playing that I don't want to mess around with gabage guitar equipment and I only want to buy gear that I will keep a long time. I used diffferent FX units throughout the time I've been playing guitar. Digitech tend to have horrible modeling and sounds very fizzy in my opinions so I gave up on them a long time ago. Roland, Line 6 and TC Electronics tend to be very expensive for what you get. Vox and Zoom no longer make the good units they used to. I had a Zoom which is owned by Roland as well as Boss and I thought it was the best bang for your buck, but I think they discontinued it because it's not wise for a company to compete against itself with a low priced product that sound just as good if not better than some Boss units. Vox no longer makes the Tone Lab line so another good one gone. I won't deal with Behriunger anymore, their effects aren't that great and the customer support is horrible. I used to own a Boss ME-25 which if I wasn't getting ready to be kicked out of my old place I'd still have, but I had to sell it with other gear so I didn't end up homeless.

The Boss ME-25 was a great little unit, but it lacked a few things that I'd use now. Then I checked out the Boss ME-80 and it had the things the ME-25 didn't have plus a few extras that I just love and enjoy.

I use this unit for practise at night so I don't get the cops called on me for being too loud and it's great for that. Considering I'm not a cover musician and I know what sound I want this is perfect for my FX loop on my Peavey 5150 and my BlackStar HT-40. I don't use the amp models when using my amps because I prefer tube preamp distortion over digital distortion anyday. What I do is run a noise gate and a signal boost as my only pedals in front of my amps and use this to color my tone through the FX loops. I love how I can engage and disengage the effects I want and wanted to cut like a pedal board. For lead I could engage a analog delay with an extra high mid boost and for cleans I could add a chorus to make my noisy 5150 sound much better for clean.

Drawbacks,
You really lack options for setting up your own signal chain, there are ways around that. For what I do I don't have an issue with that, some other musicians might.
It's not the best for modeling. Though you can get a lot of different sounds and tones from this unit, it doesn't offer a lot of amp and cab models for a gigging musician that plays a ton of covers where they need patches on the fly. You can set this up to do patches, but it works far better for effects than it does for modeling and patches.
I think they had in mind people using solid state amps when they design this. If you prefer tube distortion like I do then you may find using this a problem. My solution to this is run this unit through the FX loop and have a noise gate and signal boost in front of the amp to compensate for that. If that's too much of a pain you may as well go with TC Eletronics then and pay the extra money.
Last complaint, but nothing major. You figure for the money you pay they may as well supple a PSU with this unit. PSU don't cost that much and I don't inderstand the big issue with at least giving people buying this unit one. I hate the idea of going through 6 batteries a week, having to buy rechargable abtteries(a good investment, but pricey at first till it pays off) or having to go to Boss or some aftermarket company to get a PSA PSU(which I know I'll end up doing anyhow).

Since I don't play covers in a gigging band and I use this in my FX loop this unit works very well fcr me. I can't say this unit is for everyone, but if you have a solid state amp that you want to sound better, a tube amop where you just only use the effects and not the modeling and you don't play in a cover band where you need a ton of patches on the fly then this unit maybe for you. This is also a great FX unit for digital recording since it has a UBS output and is great for quiet practise so you don't disturb your neighbors. It's well build, sturdy and comes from a company that tends to back up their product very well.

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Welp. I looked at my massive effect box and thought, "If only they made a reliable multi effect pedal that didn't sound cheesy." It was like I found a 4x12 Marshall stack that sounded as good as a practice amp! Holy Grail! Infact, sounds better than my amp's distortion channel which was the envy of many guitar player/fans of the band over the years. I put the amp on clean, and let the ME-80 do its work. BUT FIRST, if you buy this unit used, reset to factory default. (hold down this and push that kinda thing. Gotta love the Internet).

Speaking of Internet, Boss has a website where you can get all kinds of preset tones. You like Hendrix? They got Jimi. You like Eddie? Vai? Covered. Oh yur a country guy? Boom! Every conceivable music type is covered. I simply set my amp clean and let the ME-80 do the rest. The software is free BUT the POWER SUPPLY IS NOT INCLUDED. Make sure you buy the offical Boss power supply. Im told other brands might take it's toll on your beloved unit and create some humming noise. Which, incidentally, this unit is as quiet as your clean channel. They even have a setting where you can turn your single coil into a double and vice-versa!

Forget the effects loop on your amp. Sounds awful. Go right in the front of the amp like any effects pedal. You can also use just like a poo load of separate stomp boxes. Set to manual and tweak away! You can also go between manual and stored presets on the fly! So if your a purest, make up yur own presets and even share them at Boss Tone Central! BTW forget the presets. Download the good stuff off Boss Tone Central first.

2 wires. Simple. Great tone. Built in tuner. Oh volume/wah/everything petal is great and totally customizable! Don't break your back or wallet, get an ME-80!

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I have owned a Boss ME-80 for about a week and I have used it once in church. I am very pleased with how it performed and I plan to keep using it. I previously owned a Line 6 Pod XT Live and I think it had (slightly) better sounding amp simulations, but after two breakdowns that required trips to the repairman, I decided to switch to Boss. The ME-80 has a bit more flexibility than the Line 6 unit did because you can operate it in manual mode. In manual mode it behaves similar to a pedal board that lets you turn individual effects on and off in real time. In memory mode it is similar to the Line 6 pedal, except for the addition of the Ctrl pedal that allows you to change a single parameter or switch a single effect on or off within the patch. Plan on taking a couple of days to explore all the sounds and adjust a few of them to your liking before your first gig.

The ME-80 has bright easy to read LEDs to indicate bank numbers (it's much better than the tiny Line 6 screen was). It is easy to program, especially when plugged into a computer. It is much more versatile that I expected. Popular effects like phaser, chorus, and reverb show up at multiple points in the signal path so you can sequence them in a variety of ways. You can even run multiple choruses or multiple flangers at the same time. The collection of available effects is huge, and they all live up to the quality you would expect from a Boss pedal.

While the amp simulations are not my favorite, they are close. I think I will get used to them. (If you have never played through a tube amp, you will think this unit sounds awesome.) Multi-effects pedals are not for everyone. But the Boss ME-80 appears to bridge the gap well between the control offered by a pedal board and the programmability of a multi-effects system. It's a keeper.

The ME-80 is like having 5 or 6 Boss pedals all rolled into one pedalboard plus much more. Weight is about that of an electric guitar. On the road you may want to carry a backup because with a breakdown you loose all your pedals. That is the ONLY CON I can think of. Its awesome.

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I upgraded from the ME-70. I use Stomp Box mode. I love the enhanced 2 foot pedals in one space layout. A pedal is available for each stomp box. I am not much of a banks person. I only use the distortions and amp models when plugged into a solid state non tube device.

If you buy a single pedal for each me-80 effect plus a powered pedal board to carry them all around in then you're looking at 600-1000 easy. Price them, a CH2 or CH5 is 119. Plus the same COSM circuitry making the individual BOSS pedals are here all rolled into one. Plus a wah pedal. Don't tell them.

I love using this as a stand alone head phone amp for the times no one else should or can hear, like at 3 AM when that song wants out. When no tube amp is available use this as the amp plugging directly into a PA, mixer, recording console. The amp models come in handy emulating your fave tube amp as do distortions then.

When I use this with my tube amp I prefer using the amps fx loop(twins/deluxe/super reverbs excluded). I mostly use the chorus/delay/reverb types of effects and that is where those kinds of fx should be plugged into your amp. With an amp I never use the amp models because I want to hear my amp. I never use boost, OD or distortions because I want the real tube thing coming from my amp managed by amp channel.

The thing I love the most is the loop pedal. There is nothing more fun and exciting than laying down a backing rhythm then playing lead and singing over it while people watch. They love it, cheer you on, sing along and gets your creativity going.

So yeah more than 1000 worth of individual pedals all rolled up into one unit with a wah with a looper, at 299. Why are you reading this and not adding to cart?

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I love this multi-stompbox. The effects are equally as quality as the individual stompboxes are. The unit is very easy to use, and without reading the instruction manual, you could do everything on this unit, short of saving self-made presets. The only area where this unit could improve upon, in my opinion, are the distortion presets. I guess I'm just extremely used to the distortion from a tube amp, so if I wanted to use distortion along with this, I'd just put this unit in the effects loop of my ENGL, and use the effects of the ME-80, and the distortion from my tube amp. Overall great product though; very rugged, hundreds of effect combinations, and a USB interface to get more tones from BOSS's website.

Best thing I have purchased in a very long time. I had the ME-50 and loved it for years. This is a total step up and very very very easy to use. Right out of thebox its ready to jam with. Would definitely recommend to any guitar player. The new fx sounds great and just wait till you get it and mess with it... you will fall in love. Boss is the way to go with sound.

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Am a recording musician in the music game since the eighties. this is a great multi effects unit with a very reasonable price tag. Me-80 includes accurate replications of some of the coolest stomps ever available for guitarists.Really like the non complex ease of operation (unlike other flagship multi effect units). Operates in either stompbox mode or memory mode with ability to create and store several dozen presets. Ran these effects through both my MesaBoogie and Peavy 6505 plus stacks and sound quality is just absolutely Stunning!!!! No problem using this for gigging purposes-durable construction and excellent connectivity to your amp and PA simultaeously and also usb compatible for use with your favorite DAW. Excellent price and excellent sound quality no doubt!!!! Totally satisfied-thanks Musicians Friend. Only complaint is doesnt include a power supply

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I'm very happy with this pedal; it sounds great, is versatile and does almost everything you could ask for.

First the negatives but keep in mind that these are all minor:
              - Can't change order of effects but effect sections are each flexible enough to overcome this.
              - Have to switch to manual mode to switch individual effects on/off; it's only an extra click but the ideal pedal would have a separate set of foot switches for memory changes and effect on/off but the ME-80 does have one foot switch that's programmable.
              - the expression pedal has limited options but the most common uses are there.

              Positives:
              - Sounds great
              - Easy to use
              - Ctl foot switch can be set to toggle a group of effects on/off (turn some on and others off) OR change a single knob's setting (for example change delay time or rotary speed)
              - it wakes up in the mode you left it in when you powered down.

Another reviewer didn't like the distortion sounds, I disagree both the distortion pedals and preamp models sound great – and combine like the real thing. Of course it's possible to pick bad combinations but it's the same with the original pedals and amps. I own a large variety of gear and this is a welcome addition. Keep in mind that no single piece will do everything but for the price of a few individual pedals you get an all in one that can be used easily as a single effect or multi-effect in the studio and for live will be the only pedal you need to bring – no patche cables between pedals to fail in the middle of the set, etc.

You will want to buy the adapter - batteries are always bad since they go dead at the worst time and are just a waste.

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

This processor meets and exceeds my needs for a versatile array of effects. The primary applications for this product will be for pop, rock, blues, jazz and ambient sounds. So far I have been able to achieve just what I need with this product. The manual effects switching is intuitive and easy to use right off the bat, and the memory mode is fairly straightforward, but some time with the user guide will result in less frustration. The amp models will give you a great realistic & authentic foundation for many sounds and the effects successfully provide whatever "color" you might desire in the patch. The loop function @ 38 seconds is very handy for in home practice. The expression pedal is a bit stiff, but I imagine it will break in fine with use. Overall, this is a great product, especially for the price. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a more compact rig when compared to similar setups by way of traditional stomp boxes and for someone that sees the utility of a processor to be more effective than tap dancing your way around a pedal board.

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

The ME-80 is an awesome tool no matter what style of music you play. I play in a worship band, which is mostly mild overdrive and spacey delays and volume swells. This pedal is perfect for applications such as this. The pedal actually has three different delay stages (two of which have tap tempo) so if you want to get really crazy you can. When playing on a solid state amp, I've found that it is actually better to treat the amp models sort of like an overdrive or distortion pedal because the EQ is more customizable (a 3 band as opposed to just a tone knob) and using the OD/DS stage as more of a solo boost. However, when playing on a tube amp that has a decent gain stage built in, I have found it better to stay away from the amp models. That being said, I have been able to get some pretty sweet metal, blues, and classic rock tones out of this thing after messing with the models and the EQ for a bit. I will say that it takes some time to really get what you're looking for. Because there are so many different ways to shape your tone, the possibilities are literally endless. This is both a pro and a con, because with choices come indecisiveness.

All in all this unit is awesome. It has allowed me to mess around with and learn to use effects that I would have never bought or even tried out without them being already built in to this pedal. It can give some awesome character to any amp you plug it into and also gives the option of going direct in to a PA due to the amp models. For the price of a basic delay with tap tempo and an OD pedal, you get every effect you will ever need. Is it gonna make your cheap amp sound like a dual rectifier? Definitely not. But it will give you options that you never thought you would have and makes playing guitar feel fun and new all over again. It's a great product that I could not live without.

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I have stayed away from multi-effects pedals because most of those that I have tried were not designed for country players looking for the Telecaster sound. Certainly the presets were most always variations on distortion. This unit is so versatile! I dialed up some very clean sounds in Manual Mode and made some sweet lead tones with plenty of drive and punch. Slammed it straight into my Twin Reverb and it came out swinging. You can really dig into the options and come up with some great tones. If you're worried that this was created for the rock gods only, I assure you this can produce the TWANG!

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

This is a great pedal for on the go musicians, the amp modelling is amazing for any style. Take it to rehearsal and set up in seconds, no guitar amp required.

There is a slight tone loss when trying to get a complete bypassed signal for say acoustic. Wah pedal is too sharp on the ears to use the full sweep. Lastly, for the looper you cannot prerecord a phrase at one point in the song, stop it and restart it when needed. Once you stop the loop, it's gone.

SUMMARY: If you were to hop on a plane for a gig, this will do almost everything you'll need, no need to bring that 60lb pedal case fear of having it lost, this 7lb pedal is a carryon. Boss has done a great job but I feel the wah and looper is the only area I feel needs for focus in the future, hopefully a software upgrade can fix this.

I am retired from live gigs and now play mostly at home, with headphones. The ME-80 is just about ideal for me. I used to have the predecessor product - MD-70 - and it had some shortcomings. The ME-80 is a huge improvement. It sounds better and offers additional controls over effects and EQ. The Aux In and Headphones Out work as advertised. The prerecorded music (Aux In) and the guitar (Headphones Out) both sound just as they would through speaker cabinets built for the task - no small accomplishment.

I can't believe how many 5 stars this unnatural pedal received! I'm a Mesa Boogie tube amp player and I realize there is a need for solid state sounds IE; full on metal etc. Line 6 is a wonderful solid state amp with many huge epic sounds (don't get this board and just spend a little more and get a Line 6 amp and you're set in the solid state world) Not only did this pedal get great reviews but I always just loved boss' effects, so I thought I was good to go. BUT this pedal is the thinnest, most unnatural, plated sound I've ever heard. It doesn't even come with an adapter. So I thought the pedal didn't get a long with my Mesa Boogie so I tried to plug it in direct to the PA (and it only comes with a 1/8th stereo plug in for recordings/PA .. O brother!) and it even sounded worse! No real stereo and it even got thinner!

one good thing so far is the battery time it last at least 18 hour which I know don't sound long but who plays 18 hour a day. i also bought the power supply for use at home but when I want to take it to a jam or a friends ,batteries last long enough to leave the power plug home and their is no lost of sound the thing is there is no warning when batteries are going to get low if their is have not seen it yet ,and the preamp setting well when you use them in the memory mode it should at least let you know what the setting so you can use them in manual mode and make little changes to it, but I am not complaining this is one of the best buy for me, now I can stop buying all the effect pedals this is all I need and yes I would and already have recommended this to my friends P.S. a great improvement over the me-70

Comments about Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I had an ME-50 and needed to upgrade for a new project. The ME-80 is a perfect fit. Similar controls as the ME-50 with added functionality...Easy to use and totally satisfied with the sounds coming out of my Marshall DSL-100....Very worthy!
