I play an Ampeg SVT-VR through a Bergantino NV412 mainly but recently had a chance to play this amp at a rehearsal space through a GK 1x15 and a 4x10 cab (not sure the exact models) and I was very impressed. Coming from my 300 all-tube watt amp I was skeptical what kind of tone this little solid state thing could produce but I was able to dial in a wide array of tones with ease. There is no lack of that full/loud (but still clear) bottom end that I crave while also having very articulate highs. Although I did have only a few hours with this amp, I can say it was one of the nicer solid state amps in this wattage rang I have played.

I bought my first 800RB in '83, the first year they came out. That one was a tank, solid, dependable, never ever any trouble. I sold it 12 years later because I thought I was thru playing. Started playing again a little over two years ago so I bought another one. Two months out of the warranty it burns up. Local repair guy says they are totally different than the original ones. Now instead of American hand made it's all made in China (at least the circuit boards) and nowhere near what they once were.

this amp has been around for 30 years and still going strong
I bought a 400rb 20 years ago and it still works perfect. I just bought the 800rb for the biamp feature. I'm expecting to get 20+ out of this one

The ANIMAL!!!!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I have played for more than 20 years and this amp is my constant companion. One of my 800RB's is about 22 and the other one isn't much younger. The only issue I've had with them is cold-solder connection problems, which is fairly common with the GK amps. If you consider everything else, that is a minor issue. In the time I've had my 2 RB's, I have had them in the shop a total of 3 times (around $100-$150 each time). "I'll buy that for a dollar!!!" (for the Robocop fans). When all is said and done, I'll take my GK800, SWR Goliath, and Zon bass onto any stage, any time!!!!!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I've owned this amp since 1987. It's been in the shop once for blown transistors on the 300 watt side and that was 15 years ago. This amp is incredibly reliable, versatile, and a constant companion. It has served as my primary amp since the day I purchased it new. I road case mine with rack rails and have used a huge array of cabinets with it. Currently using an SVT 410 HLF with a hartke transporter alumicone 2 x10 for the top end running biamped. I LOVE THIS AMP!

This is a monster bass amp

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

This is the first review I've ever written. But I must say that this is a monster of an amp. 33 years of playing nationwide and in studio have convinced me. I have 26 basses and only one amp that I rely on for the "big shows" and "critical gigs". Believe me, I've tried most of them. I currently own Ampeg, Eden, Yamaha, SWR and MusicMan. But this is "my sound". 1-15" & 1"4-10" for the lows, 1-2-10 for th highs. Hartke XL's. My Warwick, Pedula, MusicMan, Kubickis, Fenders P's and J's and Gibson Thunderbirds sound GREAT through it. Don't hesitate. This is the real deal.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I'm actually in the process of purchasing a new bass amp since my problematic Ampeg SVT-3 Pro just died on me. I went to the store to pick up a rental while I search for a replacement amp and found this old, beat up, scratched up 800RB. I've heard good things so I figured what the hell lets give it a shot.So far all I can is WOW. Impressive! This amp really makes me want to play! I honestly cannot believe how good it sounds. It absolutely kills the SVT-3 Pro in volume and tone! I can dial in anything from an old school, deep, scooped bass thump to a sizzling sparkling modern tone. I'll be honest that I was a bit skeptical picking up this beat up solid state head because I just didn't think it would have the tone...so far this amp has proved me wrong! DEFINITELY worth the hype!!! You really have to play it to believe it. Can't wait to gig with it!! I might just keep it :)

Classic Act

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I gig mine regularly without a backup. The wattage rating on these might seem to equal that of cheaper amps, but don't be fooled. 300 here seems to equal 500 in other amps that I've owned and gigged. (eden, mesa, swr) Every reviewer on here will tell you that this is the real deal. You're probably going to read this and still buy some other amp with more "modern" features and seemingly flashier specifications. You'll be missing out. I did mark the "value" as 4. It's not a cheap amp for the specifications. It depends on what you consider value. It's not a "value" amp. Niether is an SVT. But they are worth what they cost. This head kills both the Eden Metro and the Mesa Boogie Basis M2000 that I had previously. This amp has soul. This amp has reliability. And it's got the sound. 4 EQ knobs do everything that you need on stage. I've seen these in festival size stage rigs (Levon Helm band's DB player at the gathering of the vibes) and all over the local scene. Name another solid state amp still in production this long! Enough said.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I bought this head and run it trough an Ampeg 8x10 about two years ago, and I couldn't be happier. You get so much variety of tone out of this, and not to mention the power it delivers. I was recently in a car accident and it got tossed around and still works perfect just like the day I bought it. You can't get a better solid state head for this price. I highly recommend the G&K 800 RB.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I've owned the GK800RB before and it lasted for 10 years. I've gone around the block with other Manufacturers, just for the sake of change, ending up at my tried and true reference point once again with the GK800RB. Great amplifier and stellar tone characteristics. Comments are always a subjective issue, but it is my opinion that this is an extremely versatile unit and easy to manipulate your tonal preferences. Power is not an issue with plenty to spare. Keep it simple.

Amazing Bass Head

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I recommend the 800 RB fully. I bought this GK head about a year ago and have nothing but good comments about it. This thing is pretty Loud and when you hear the amazing tones that get pumped out of your cab you will realize that paying a bit more is definatley worth it. If you do end up getting it I suggest you purchase a rack mount case for protection.

Great sounding amp. Loud enough to hang with the big boys, but cheap enough for an average joe. The only way this amp could be improved is with the addition of a ground lift switch.

Customer Service...

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I have been playing through this head for almost 3 years now. It is flight cased but still goes through plenty of abuse (loading and unloading)... The one issue I had was that the bottom panel lost all of the screws by either vibration or jarring. One call to customer service and they sent me a full set of replacement screws for free. Good company, Great product.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

After less than a year of ownership and gigging only 3-4 times a month, this amp blew out its primary. I went to my local guitar store tech and he pointed out all of the shoddy soldering done at the factory. I would not reccomend this amp to my least favorite musician.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

As a guy who does sound for a dancehall, and not having much experience with a back line, I tried both the Hartke and Ampeg heads before I bought this. While the other heads are very good, the GK worked so much better for the guys who play the style of music I book, which is primarly Zydeco. Nice warm, funky, bottom sounds plus, everyone knows how to use it, which wasn't always the case with the others. Just a great head. I will be selling the others and purchasing one very soon.

I have been playing bass for over 35 years and Gk makes the best sounding bass amps. They sound great until they blow up. I stopped using them for a few years but I only want to play bass through Gk amps or I don't even want to bother playing. It is the sound.

One Solid Amp

By Phattrabbit

from New Boston, MI

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bass Amp Head:

I bought my amp over 20 years ago and used it hard for the first 10 yrs. Afert that I retired from the music seen. The amp went into storgage like in the garage, my bedroom and the basement. I have recently rejoined the music world. I drug out the old JBL-215 cab, the 410 cab and GK800 and fired them up. The pods were a little scratchy but wow I forgot the punch this amp had. I play a Fender P-bass slap style. When I cranked it up and let a couple of pops runs go I think I gave myself a black eye. I know the dog will never be the same, He is still under the couch. The low end is awsome, the highs will part your hair and the sustain is there. A 20 year old amp that still works like new, That to me is well built and and a great value.

I've been playing GK800's for 15 years now. For the money, you won't find a better amp. I love the Bi-Amp feature. I have mine plugged into an SWR 210T and Peavey BW 15". I've gigged countless times with this combo, and it has tons of power to spare.
