Comments about Headway EDB-2 Direct Preamp:

After hearing a lot of hype about Headway products, I purchased the EDB-2 to do an A/B with my L.R. Baggs ParaDI. I went with this model over the EDM-1 to get the full EQ section. With Anthem SL systems in my ac guitars, the boxes sounded identical. With multiple guitars, I couldn't get one to sound any better than the other. Both had a very similar sound both through my amps as well as direct into my computer/DAW. Good, strong, clean and balanced signal and tone. No phantom power (requiring a wall wart or two 9v batteries) is a big strike, though understandable given the additional features. The EDB-2 is really meant for players who need multiple inputs for dual pickup systems that require blending as well as to incorporate other audio sources (Stereo iPod and XLR mic). If you have a single output pick-up in your acoustic and are looking for an easy, simple set-up, this product is overkill and doesn't sound any better than other pre's that are less expensive.

Comments about Headway EDB-2 Direct Preamp:

The only thing of its kind, I believe, and it was perfect, in concept, for my dual-pickup upright bass system. My bass is mic'd with a mic that needs phantom power and a piezo pickup that uses a regular 1/4" line cable. This unit receives both those inputs and supplies the phantom power to the mic. The two channels have independent volume controls, and the EQ can be assigned to either channel (but only one). A notch filter can be assigned to the other channel. Very handy, actually, as I wanted to cut the top end off the piezo sound.

BUT, the pots started making noise within five months, getting worse and worse, and finally making static without me touching them. THEN the inner circuits started failing and my batteries drain in two hours (vs. five days when new), AND the AC adaptor makes a huge screaming noise in the signal path. Horrible.

I wrote service last week and they didn't reply. Go figure. I would not buy this product.

Comments about Headway EDB-2 Direct Preamp:

I use this exclusively with my 2007 Taylor GS8 (816) that has a Highland IP-2 pickup system installed (under saddle piezo and mic). I bought this unit to replace my broken (and discontinued) Highlander PAMDI - their equivalent to this Headway unit. The Highlander was slightly nicer, had independent 4-band graphic EQ for each channel, with independent volume, etc. But that unit had a very strange and proprietary power supply that broke and could not be replaced. This unit does not quite give me all the same flexibility as the PAMDI, but does 90% of the same for HALF THE PRICE (DI, volume, EQ, notch, XLR out). Also adds other features likes an aux input, etc though I don't use that. I use this exclusively as my live DI for my dual source. Only complaint is that when running a TRS cable, I have to plug into ch 2, because it is the only stereo input. This makes my internal mic Ch 1 and piezo Ch 2 on the mixer controls. Seems backwards, but works the same. Good sounding unit. Always get compliments on my acoustic tone. EQ bands seem to be well suited for acoustic and give lots of available cut/boost. Rarely move them much past 11 or 1 o'clock when cutting/boosting. Plus that it uses a very standard power supply that can be easily replaced if needed.
