OVERVIEW

The ultimate creative recording tool for any guitarist!

Co-developed by M-Audio and Roger Linn Design, the M-Audio Black Box Guitar Multi-Effects Processor is the first creative tool for guitarists that combines amp modeling, powerful beat-synced link effects, and electronic drums with an audio interface for computer-based recording. Based on AdrenaLinn II technology, the M-Audio Black Box can be used as a standalone amp-modeling and effects unit featuring spot-on models of 12 of the greatest guitar amps of all time. 99 drum patterns with tap tempo make it easy to try out different grooves and tempos.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To get the Reloaded firmware update from M-Audio and get even more amp models and effects for your Black Box, go to this link. The Reloaded update ups the creativity factor of your M-Audio Black Box by giving you a total of 40 amp models and 121 effects to use.

The Black Box also incorporates tons of inspiring unique effects that automatically beat-sync to your drum patterns. A built-in microphone preamp is also included for recording and processing vocals and acoustic instruments. One simple USB connection sends your output to your favorite computer-based recording software—and syncs the Black Box's drums and effects to your tracks. The Black Box gives you killer tone, groundbreaking effects, huge beats, and easy recording all in a single, easy-to-use package.

The Black Box tears it up with 12 virtual amp models based on AdrenaLinn technology that span the gamut of the tools needed by the modern guitarist. You get killer models based on Fender Bassman, Fender Deluxe, Fender Twin, Vox AC 30, Marshall JTM-45, Marshall Plexi, Marshall JCM-2000, Hiwatt DR-103, Soldano SLO-100, Mesa Boogie Maverick, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, and Bogner Uberschall. These virtual amp models are so realistic that you won't know the difference when you close your eyes but your back and wallet will.

Beat-Synced Effects

All effects are beat-synchronized to the drums or external MIDI clock so they're always in sync with your grooves and sequences. In addition to standards like tremolo, delay, chorus, auto-wah, and talk box, the Black Box has a variety of unique effects such as filter sequencing and arpeggios that let you create sounds you've never heard before. There's also an independent beat-synced delay with controls for note division, number of repeats, and volume. Combined with amp modeling, these effects are totally awesome. You can also process your guitar, microphone, or drum patterns through the DSP effects for some truly out-there original sounds.

Drummer on Call

You can get your grooves and songs started instantly with 100 built-in drum patterns. You'll find all kinds of inspiring styles to choose from. Best of all, the Black Box's unique beat-synced effects are automatically locked to the drums. Just tap the tempo you want with the front panel button to set the desired master tempo. You can even run them through the onboard effects for some very unique sounds.

The drums and effects can also lock to the tempo of incoming MIDI Clock from your sequencer. It's pretty much impossible to avoid playing something new and cool every time you turn the Black Box on.

Instant Inspiration

The M-Audio Black Box ships with 100 great presets that get you rockin' as soon as you power up. These great combinations of amp models, beat-synced effects, and drum grooves will have you jamming instantly every time you turn it on. There are also 100 user preset locations so you can store all your favorite variations and unique creations. Everything is super-simple and intuitive so that you can focus on what's important: your music.

You've turned a lot of people's ears with the Black Box alone and there's even more power available to you when you plug it into a Mac or PC. M-Audio built their highly acclaimed mobile interface and mic/instrument preamp technology right into the Black Box. I've owned the M Audio Black Box since June '06. Bought it as a practice tool to keep up my chops since now in life I only play out every 3 or 4 weeks. The software took a bit of tinkering but after a bit of a learning curve I get what I want out of it and there is much more yet to be tapped. If you want, you can get an online upgrade from Ableton once you install the Live Lite 4 Guitar stater package. I've recently started using it onstage. It works well with the mono out going into the "power amp in" input on your guitar amp effects loop thus by-passing the pre-amp and using the guitar amp as a slave only. The mic stand adapter lets you put it almost anywhere on stage and its pretty stable. If you're too heavy handed with the "amp gain" settings on the Black Box you can get a lot of mud but with some tinkering you can dial in what you want/need. The boutique amp models, Bogner, Boogie etc are pretty sweet. The one big caution is, if you have roadies/crew handling your gear, this unit is not built for abuse. If my guys back in the seventies were handling this thing I'd have gotten about 2 gigs out of it. But now I baby everthing I own.

Owning and having used DSP modelers and effect units for years, I was disappointed in this device. First (and much to my surprise), it has no editing software, which sophisticated users know is essential for efficient building and tweaking of complex presets. A third-party editor is available, but costs extra. There are numerous problems with the recording interface arrangement. Worst of all is the extremely flimsy plastic pedal unit, which breaks almost immediately in use.

Good buy.

I bought this to use for the guitar effects and amp models and got more than I had expected. The effects are great, the amp mods are even better. The drum beats are horrible though. It has a built in tunner that comes in very handy. You also get the pedal board as a free gift which is a great deal. Overall I was very pleased with the item except for the drum patterns. And the recording part can be a big problem if you don't know what you are doing. Not made for abuse, you will have to baby it to keep it in good working condition. But I was very satisfied with it, I love it and my freinds also love it. They hassel me to borrow it all the time. After buying it i sold all my other effects pedals due to the fact that this had all of them and more! I would recommend the black box to anyone.

good----for the price

I have had this unit for almost two years now and for how much I payed for it, it has been good to me. The amp models are ok, if played thorugh a speaker, but if played through another amp they just don't mix. The effects are neat, but they are nothing that would ever be used in a studio, and some of the more used effects, like wah pedal, lack the tweekablitiy compared to something like arpeginator. Finally the recording interface is very confusing if you're not adept to dealing with these sorts of things, and the directions are scant at best. But for this price, what could possibly be better? If you don't mind hours of tinkering with knobs this is the product for you.

Underated and Misunderstood

What a deal: BB, footcontroller (essential), software for a low price! I downloaded and installed the firmware 'reload' after about a month of use, so got to experience both generations for the price of one- lucky me. The amp models are super; a real education in amp-ology. I love to put my Fulltone OCD or Dist Pro in front of the BB for extra balls and 'best of both world' tone. It always sounds good direct into a PA, or into a tube amp. The unit has so much intrinsinc forethought built into it; so many features that pros and tweakers appreciate, and reacts very amplike in it's controls and dynamics. I've giged with it numerous times. The BEAT SYNCED EFFECTS are of course the main event. The 99 drum rhythm patterns are are cool and funky and work great at a wide range of tempos. Looking foreward to expanding this use via the software when I get some more time. Definitly one of the more fun and useful toy/tools in my collection.

Simply the Best

I have been playing for 25+ years. I have owned several "holy grail" amps along with amp modelers ( I bought the original "Rockman" back 20 years ago so I could jam with headphones at college). I can honestly say this is the best I have ever heard. The replications of amps are awesome. I tried all the other popular modelers before getting the Black Box. The Black Box (especially with the free Reloaded software) doesn't sound like it is "copying" the amps, but that it is the amps.I admit the Reloaded software does add some great features, such as reverb, that are a little tricky to figure out the button sequence to pull them up. However, a little time and the manual takes care of it.M-Audio deserves praise for this product. A lot of the other products on the market look and sound like toys - this is built incredibly well. The one strange aspect is no off/on switch - You just plug in the AC adaptor cord and it fires up. Use the USB to run straight into your computer and you have dozens of the world's best amps, with righteous effects, at your finger tips.Great job M-Audio!

Buggy and Clumsy

It's pretty nice when it works, but a lot of times whenever you start using effects or the delay it starts to pop really badly, and only a reset of the box seems to work.

Great Digital Connection - Lousy Effects

By EricPublic

from San Jose, CA

I bought this unit for one reason only; I want to connect my guitar to my sound card via Digital I/O. That way I only need to worry about my guitar cable, and not the connection to the computer! The black box unit has a led indicator and input trim control, so I can get a nice clear signal into the computer via the SPDIF out. It works great. The effects are really poor, and the drum machine is hopeless. I gave this a 4.5 for value - because mine came with the pedal board to - so for the price you just can't go wrong. The fact that it works with Pro-Tools LE - should keep the resale value of this unit high. If you want a great SPDIF connection to your sound card, its a good deal. If it comes with the free expression pedal/foot switch its a great deal. If M-Audio made the MIDI implementation better (support expression pedal/etc) you would be crazy not to buy this product!

GREAT!

By no hay problema

from Merritt Island, FL

I have had this product for over three months and it works without a hitch. There are many options to choose from with the array of different effects, amp models, and delays and there are many drum beats. there is also a microphone input, which is nice. But the free recording software is pretty confusing. Overall great product. I recommend it!
