Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

Very surprised at the tone. I was able to get a clean, jazzy tone from this amp using my archtop guitar. It seems to have enough power to meet all my gigging needs. I'm using a cab, with a 12 inch Celestion speaker.

Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

As with many of the users of these smaller SS amps, I'm getting older and don't really want to lug around my 60lb. tube amp anymore. Over the years I've found that almost every amp is a compromise in some way - but I'm happy to say that the Micro 50 gets the job done and is a really excellent, versatile package.

I prefer to have 3 band EQ on my amps, which is partly why I wanted to give the Micro 50 a shot. The EQ is responsive enough to be useful but you don't get super dramatic tonal sweeps like you do on some modern amps. I'm fine with this - the base clean sound is great - punchy & warm. I play blues, funk, R&B, reggae & soul in cover bands so a good clean sound is my main need from an amp - I don't feel like I'm missing anything, tonally - at all - by using the Micro 50 instead of one of my tube amps. It doesn't have a brittle top end, it's not harsh - it just delivers a great, useable, warm clean sound.

The amp takes pedals very well - I have way too many dirt boxes and I've tried pretty much all of them with the Micro 50 - currently running a Lovepedal Champ, Xotic AC Booster and Barber LTD - everything I've tried sounds as I would hope and expect. The dirt channel on the amp is like a built-in Tube Screamer - it has that kind of mid-pushed grit to it, but has bass & treble controls. I'm shocked by how good it sounds, and kudos to DV Mark for giving us a second "channel" that we can actually use.

The cab you run will, of course, have an impact on the sound. I have a cheap Bugera 1x12 which I've been using for a couple of years now - it has the stock Turbosound speaker in it and it sounds fine. I've always liked that speaker. I also have a Raezer's Edge ported 1x10 that sounds AMAZING with this amp. I don't remember what speaker is in that cab, but it really sounds great and has a bit more warmth and presence - so that's my cab of choice.

The Micro 50 has plenty of power for gigs & I haven't missed my tube amps at all, for volume or tone.

Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

In this age of 4 lb. Class D amplifiers, this amp is a real winner. I have tried and also own other brands of these small amps but this one stands out from the rest. I have two of these and plan to install one on a pedalboard. I have been playing over 50 years and can't handle large heavy amps. It was a real pleasant surprise when I hooked up this amp and heard it for the first time. Both channels sound great and it takes pedals very well. Getting it on sale was icing on the cake!

Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

However - it would have received a 5 star rating except for one problem. In the 'Over-drive' mode - I notice noise coming from this unit. How so? With my Fender Squire - Strat - in positions (1) - (3) - (5) there is noise. In positions (2) - (4) No noise. So I tried it with my American built 1982 Strat - Repeating the same conditions - the problem is still there.

Using my 1953 Gretsch Electromatic - NO Problems - Also, using my Ibanez - NO Problems.

So in conclusion - There is something in the switching control of the my Fender Strat's that the DV Mark 50 - doesn't like. Other than that - You'll love it!

      GB,
You strat has single coil pickups, that's where the noise comes from. In positions 2 and 4 you are using two pups together, like a humbucker = no hum. Your amp is fine, your guitar is fine.

Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

I'm a slightly-pro musician who gigs regularly, but I don't pay all the bills with music. I've played in various pub/function cover bands for many years and as I've gotten older: 1) I started having back issues and 2) realized that bar patrons and wedding guests really don't care about whether my guitar sound comes from handmade, boutique amps & pedals, they generally just want to have a good time.

In looking for a lightweight gigging amp I've considered Quilter - which sound really good, but are a bit more expensive (depending on the model) but decided to try this DV Mark due to getting it at a good price.

It's really impossible to say whether this amp is "as good as" tubes, or not. There are so many variables in that equation. I've heard players sound great through solid state rigs and others sound pretty awful through expensive gear and tube amps. In other words - to my mind tubes are not automatically "better", an amp is a tool and it's up to you what you do with it.

To my ear this DV Mark is great for what it is. It's small, lightweight, flexible, takes pedals really well, is plenty loud for gigs & sounds excellent. The basic clean sound is excellent, and you can work the EQ to get a jazzy sound, to Fender territory, to Vox chime (at least in that neighborhood). The drive channel is actually a built-in OD with 2-band EQ and I'm pleasantly surprised by how good it sounds. It's got a good sound for punchy rhythm or solos and it's a huge bonus to actually have this be useable - so many amps are a compromise, one channel is good and the other is lacking. Not the case here.

The reverb is good for adding a bit of space, but it's kind of an odd sound - it has a little bit of a slapback repeat. It works well in small amounts but I really don't find it useful or inspiring at anything above noon.

So, this is a fun little amp with some great tones available & it really feels like a quality piece of gear - nothing about it feels cheap. I'm impressed.

This amp head is loud enough to use in a Jazz Trio or Quartet setting. Thought I'd say such... cos,I haven't come across a review about such being used in a Jazz gig.

Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

I wasn't impressed by the built in overdrive (I have better sounding pedals), but that's not why I bought this amp. I bought if for clean tones, which it does very well. With all the tone controls set at noon, the bass is too strong for my taste, so I usually turn the bass down to about 1/4-1/3 and set mids and treble between 2/3 and full. The reverb is OK, but nothing special. At least on the clean channel, the amp is very low noise and the line out works well, so recordings are easy and sound good. If you're looking for a small, solidly built amp for clean tones, give the Micro50 a try.

Trying to lighten my load due to age and back issues. This was one more step in that direction. I use it with a Fender BassBreaker 112 extension cabinet with an Eminence Lil' Texas neodymium speaker (18 lb. total). I drive the head with a Boss MS-3 with an expression/volume pedal, Xotic SP compressor and Wampler Tumnus overdrive in the loops. The MS-3 will also switch channels on the head. The tone is great and it is very powerful and loud for 50W. The overdrive channel can be tweaked to produce really good results. I'm ecstatic. I Also have Quilter Tone Block 200 and the Pro Block, which are more powerful and more expensive but without channel switching. I believe the DV Mark is a better product for my needs.

Comments about DV Mark Micro50 50W Guitar Amp Head:

I'd been going back and forth about buying a Micro 50 when I happened on a used one at a very attractive price. I've been playing it for a couple of days and overall I'm very happy with it.

Sound-wise, the clean channel is very Fender-ish, which is to say somewhat bassy, although that can be compensated by adjusting the tone controls. The tone controls aren't super responsive, like some modern amps, but more like those on a classic amp. Through my 12" Mojotone cabinet with an Eminence Patriot I get classic Fender tones. Through my Eden EX110 (a compact bass cabinet) I get a very clear, hi-fi, sound that's great for jazz, or for amplifying acoustic instruments.

The overdrive channel has a good crunch at lower levels and a nice sustain at high levels. Unless you're very picky about your overdrive sound, you don't need pedals with this amp. (I did test it with an MXR Micro Amp, and it responded need well to that). The amp doesn't come with a foot pedal (kind of a necessity for channel switching) but the inexpensive single button Fender pedal that Musicians Frend sells works fine.

Overall I'm very happy with it. It's more than loud enough for any playing I do, and compact enough to carry in a bookbag. I'm going to make an 8" cabinet for it with a full-range driver that im hoping will make the ideal portable rig.

I AM RUNNING THE BASS KNOB ON THE CLEAN CHANNEL ON THE 2ND OR 3RD MARK WITH MY SQUIER TELE TO GET THAT GOOD TWANG. IT HAS A DIFFERENT SOUNDING REVERB THAN I AM USED TO. THE REVERB, TO MY EARS, SOUNDS LIKE A REVERB/CHORUS KIND OF SOUND. I DON'T HAVE TO TURN IT UP VERY MUCH TO GET A GOOD REVERB SOUND, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF VOLUME THAT YOU LIKE TO RUN THE AMP AT. I JUST GOT IT ON THURS. OF LAST WEEK SO I HAVEN'T TRIED EXPERIMENTING WITH OTHER EFFECT PEDALS YET. SEEMS LIKE A WELL BUILT, GOOD SOUNDING AMP THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME. TRY ONE!

Finally a lightweight guitar head with reverb, perfect for an amateur jazz guitarist like me. Great for archtops. Top pros have used mine on gigs, perfectly happy with the tone and volume. Takes pedals well and has a decent dirty channel, adding versatility. The fan, a complaint on previous DV Mark amp designs, only engages on extended high-volume runs - in my case only once so far, when hard-pressing new speaker cabinets.
