OVERVIEW

(Open Box) This baby 6505 still has plenty of bite.

Powerful and portable, the Peavey 6505 Piranha follows in the footsteps of the popular 6505 MH mini head by packing high-gain tones into an even smaller, 20W tube hybrid power amp head. Small enough to use in a bedroom, but powerful enough for the studio, the 6505 Piranha harnesses the full gain and legendary tone of the 6505 Series.

The 6505 Piranha adds a few tricks of its own, including a bright switch along with a unique "scoop" control to achieve a wide array of tones with few controls. Additional features include the 20-watt (RMS) solid state power amp, one 4-ohm speaker output, a buffered FX loop, aux. input, headphone out, 12AX7 preamp tube and tooled metal cabinet.

This potent practice- and studio-tooled head offers staggeringly simple controls that feature just a gain knob, single EQ control, volume and a crunch/lead button for thicker/smoother gain. The tone control is a 3-band EQ compressed into one knob, so full left is a "10-0-7" scooped tone to "7-7-7" at the 12 o'clock setting to "10-10-10" when rolled full right.

FEATURES
Power: 20W (hybrid)
Tube: one 12AX7 (preamp)
Single channel
Single input
Impedance: 4 ohms minimum
Controls: gain, EQ, volume, crunch/lead switch
Buffered FX loop
Aux. input
Headphone output
Heavy-duty metal construction

I recently acquired a vintage Peavey 4x12 cabinet which is rate for 4Ohms impedance, and would cause most other heads rated at 8 or 16Ohms to draw too much current. I saw several promo videos for this head online and decided to give it a go around instead of rewiring the cabinet. As a guitarist that plays a little bit of everything, I was really impressed with how much of a range of tones this little head can deliver. It can deliver good clean tones, as well as a lot of good rock and metal tones. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of low gain and clean sounds I was able to achieve, since this head was designed to replicate the high gain sound of the 6505 series heads. The nice thing is being 20W, it puts out good distorted sounds at reasonable volume levels for practicing compared to 100W counterparts. It only has a single EQ pot, so you don't get the same tonal range you would with a 3 band EQ. You can still dial in lots of good sounding tones, its simply a matter of playing with the EQ. Having the two channels for crunch and lead really allow you to dial in a wider variety of tones, with the lead channel offering a bit more gain and sustain than the crunch channel. This does not give you quite the same high gain you would expect from its bigger brother 6505 heads, but it can achieve those super high gain tones with an overdrive pedal to give it that push over the hill.

Overall this head was a good buy for the price, and has been a lot of fun to play with.

I really love the 6505 sound, so I put this on my wish list as something I could play at low volumes or even record with. The first thing I noticed right away was that it lacked gain when dimed. This is a 6505 right? Gain is nowhere near the levels of it's big brothers. Another thing is that this head is really really noisy. If you want to get into modern high gain metal, you won't be able to without an OD in front. The gain is just too week. Get a noise suppressor too. Headphone jack has no speaker emulation which sort of makes it useless unless you like the sound of bees. Changing out the stock JJ tube improves the noise, gain, and fidelity. Yes, I know it's a micro head under two franklins, but I expect a little better from Peavey. If you are going to put the 6505 label on it, it's needs to have the main allure of the 6505 name- and that is tons of gain and good quality for the money.

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:

I thought I would give one of these a try after having tried out the Orange Micro Terrors and oh boy, it wasn't even a competition. Orange built a great product that sounds really, really good and Peavey built a toy that doesn't compete.

My issues with this unit are primarily the sound quality is very poor. There is absolutely no low end with this unit. I plugged it into my Marshall 2x12, which is a great cab, and this sounded completely blah. This amp only does midranges and it does those OK at best.

The amp itself will work with any cab 4 ohms or higher but it cuts down output power as the ohms increase. It does 20 watts at 4 ohms and perhaps 10 watts at 8 then about 5 at 16 ohms. The Orange does a constant 20 watts at either 4, 8 or 16 ohms and sounds great doing it.

On a side note, what was supposed to be a new amp was an open box item that you can see someone attempted to open up. I am very disappointed in Musicians Friend for selling me an open box item as a new item.

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:

I went into this with higher expectations than I should have had, but still somewhat realistic. It was an absolute disappointment. The setup was incredibly fast and easy, and the EQ knob is honestly one of the best I've ever used on a guitar amp. That's where the good stops. The crunch is that same sterile 6505 crunch, but without much depth. The lead 'channel' was the biggest letdown. The gain on this amp, dimed, is about 11 o'clock on the 6505, but there is no chunk, thump or grind to be had no matter where you set the EQ. The attack is very thin, papery and solid state sounding. Really a poor facsimile of the trademark 6505 sound. Opt for the real deal, or even a used Bugera 6262 over this.

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:

This is a great little 6505! On its own, you get a lot of usable tones by adjusting the three knobs and using your guitar's volume and tone controls. People who own a full size (or the Mini) 6505 will notice that the Piranha does not get as heavy, and is a little undefined at full gain. Where this head really shines is adding an EQ pedal in the effects loop. With the EQ you can get classic tones to super heavy and articulate, and everywhere in between. This is a amazing head to use at home, in the studio, or using the send on the effects loop into a larger amp to re-amp your Piranha for playing in a band setting.

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:

I was expecting too much from this product. Peavey should take the "6505" tag right off this product. If you own or like the original head, you will be disappointed in the Piranha. The sound is thin and tough to dial in a tone. The gain is decent but extremely lacks the low end. I through an EQ pedal into the effects loop, which seems to help, but doesn't really solve the sound issue.

I really enjoy this micro-amp. Being able to plug basically any cab into it is a lot of fun and produces a world of sound and tone options. Currently, I like it the most through an Orange cab for good classic rock tone and through an Egnater for more metal tones, both of which it can accomplish. It does NOT replace higher watt heads, but it is a lot of fun, and that is what I believe it was designed for.

Ok for the price....I paid 99.99 as the stupid deal of the day. I wound not pay more than that for it. Sound is pretty good with all the knobs maxed out. Very little EQ control. The Orange Tiny Terror is a much better hybrid amp head for the money but it does cost 149.99(Orange) instead or 131.99(Peavey). Also the Peavey output is lowered if you plug in to a 16ohm speaker cab while the Orange is not affected.

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:

I am shocked that people actual expect this small, one-tube hybrid micro-amp is going to bring the same heat as it much bigger brothers. You have to set your expectations properly. I got a pretty good deal on this when it was listed as the SDotD so I took a chance. And with that said, I think this little amp hits the mark pretty well. I run it into a single 10-in speaker cabinet and it's quite loud and beefy. I also put a small pedal board (delay, reverb, chorus) into the FX loop and a single overdrive/distortion in front and it sounded pretty good. It makes a nice travel package to take to friends house to jam, record, or even perform. It comes with a nice carrying case too. I also like the fact that the amp's case is very sturdy and easy to open to get to the tube to replace. My only complaint is the location of the crunch/lead button. It's a little tight to reach between the cable jack and gain dial. It could have been located better.
All in all, an enjoyable little amp.

This is a tiny 20watt solid state amp. It works fantastic for recording direct( with an IR of course.) the gain is more than enough unless you are one of those not to slick people that puts a real 6505 past 11 o clock. Other reviewers complaining it doesnt have the depth or power of the large tube version. Well NO kidding. Does your cell phone sound like the entertainment system in your living room? For The Proce this thing is a great practice amp through a computer or into a 1 x12 to a 4x12. I ran it into my mesa recto cab and its plenty loud. And does what its meant to do.if you want a real 6505. Get the large head at 1k. Or if you want to jam with a band you need the mini head at the very least.

Really sounds like a 6505. The single tone is nice and simple. I found that it works best with a Vintage 30. With some speakers I tried the low end is a bit much.

When I got this It took me a while to dial in the sound I wanted, Its not like my 6505+ combo. It is closer to the Crunch with gain dimed on the clean channel. I put three stars because it doesn't have the greatest tone out of the box but it can be tweaked with help of an OD pedal out front and an EQ pedal in the effects loop. It sounds better with 2-12 or 4-12 cab. It is however a great amp for the money and very portable. Makes a great practice amp.

Loving this little amp. Got matching cab for it too. It was on Stupid Deal and couldn't pass up for the price. Perfect additional tone for my home recording.

Had this for a couple days and decided it's stayin here. Driving a 2x10" cab and using a Joyo Sweet Baby O'Drive pedal and Les Paul gets amazing grind outta these 15-20 watts. Haven't jammed whole band yet but this little guy won't have any problem at practice. At the SDOD discount rate it would be wrong NOT to buy one of these.
