OVERVIEW

(Open Box) Plenty of power, pristine clean tones and headroom in a pocket-sized head.

Designed with an emphasis on analog, VOX’s MV50 combines classic amplifier design with new and innovative production techniques to produce a miniature amplifier with truly monstrous sound. Boasting an incredible 50 watts of power, this one-pound package serves up serious guitar tone that’s reminiscent of your favorite old tube amps. With speaker and line/headphone outputs, the MV50 is perfect for the stage, at home, or in the studio for direct recording.

The MV50 is equipped an all-analog pre-amp circuit that features Nutube, a revolutionary new vacuum tube that produces authentic tube tone at a fraction of the size. By taking advantage of this incredible new technology, VOX’s engineers were able to design a true, miniature tube amplifier. Beyond the inclusion of Nutube, the pre-amp circuit in the MV50 features a staggering number of analog components that effectively reproduce the dynamic character of a traditional tube amp. Paired with this innovative pre-amp circuit is a reliable and efficient Class D power amp that has been specifically designed for the MV50. From warm, natural cleans to dynamic overdrives, this power amp has been engineered to respond to the nuances of your guitar and, of course, your technique.

Though designed with the compact BC108 in mind, the MV50 is a perfect match for nearly any speaker cabinet. The EQ switch on the back of the amplifier features two distinct settings, FLAT and DEEP. When connected to a small cabinet, such as the BC108, setting the amplifier to the DEEP mode will emphasize the rich low-frequency range and prevent the high frequencies from becoming too pronounced. When connected to a larger, more conventional speaker cabinet, setting the amplifier to the FLAT mode will allow you to take full advantage of the characteristics of the speaker cabinet, without emphasizing or reducing any frequency range.

When it comes time to practice or record, the MV50’s line/headphone out can be directly to a mixer, audio interface, or your favorite pair of headphones. VOX’s design team consulted with highly experienced recording engineers and used only the finest microphones and vintage pre-amps to design the cabinet simulation circuit in the MV50. This cleverly designed circuit allows you to record or practice with serious studio sound anywhere or anytime.

Comments about Vox MV50 50W Clean Guitar Amp Head:

I'm running this through a 1x12 Bugera cab (which to my ear is a pretty neutral speaker, but sounds great). Unless your band plays way too loud this amp should give you enough volume for gigging (even at 25 watts through an 8 ohm speaker). Takes pedals well - all of my drive pedals sound great. The MV50 reacts like my tube amps with a boost pedal in front (Fulltone & Xotic).

I really like the attenuator, and at home I play at 1/100 power with the volume at about noon. While this amp has a lot of clean headroom you will start to get some hair when you push it, but in a good way. It's the kind of sound where you can play clean by picking lightly but if you hit it hard you'll hear that you're on the edge of breakup.

Not surprising for a Vox, this is not a mid-scooped Fender clean. Mids are present, but not pushed. It is a warm clean, not sterile or spikey at all to my ear.

I've been playing this primarily with a Boss Fender reverb pedal and the tone really is glorious. I don't feel like I'm missing anything from my tube amps. Not a thing. I wish I'd had this thing years ago when I was throwing my back out moving 60lb tube amps to and from gigs.

What I don't like. The unit feels very solid, seems like a quality piece of gear, but the mini chicken head knobs on the front feel cheap (a minor complaint). Mainly I don't like how much they have crammed on the back panel. You've got tiny switches for power, flat/deep, eco (shuts it off after 15 min. of non-use) and the attenuator, as well as headphone/line out & speaker out. Once you get a speaker cable plugged in it feels very cramped. I'd much rather that the power switch was on the front.

Lastly, I wish I could get 50 watts @ 8 ohms, just for the headroom. This is giggable for me at 25 watts into 8 ohms & still gives you good headroom, but YMMV. I primarily use single coils. With hot humbuckers I don't know if you'd run out of clean headroom or not. With all 50 watts you'd be fine, I'm sure.

Comments about Vox MV50 50W Clean Guitar Amp Head:

I owned an Orange Micro Terror which was novel when it first came out but had no clean headroom for it's 20 watts. But when the MV Series came out I had to try one. Figured I could always send it back. Are you kidding me? This is a giggable amp! Yes it's clean but breaks up nicely when pushed. I put it thru an 8 ohm cab - loud but only half the watts. Hooked it up to a 4 ohm cab with 2 - 10's. OMG, Yes it does have 50 watts, clean until after 12 o'clock. I can't play solid state amps only tube amps, kind of snob about that. I have owned a '67 Vibrolux, 67 Bassman, JCM 900,Super Champ and Peavey Classic 30. So I know tone. This NuTube technology is definitely the wave of the future. Just for a laugh I asked my drummer to help me carry my new amp head into the studio. Got a laugh until he heard this thing. Then it was OMG. Buy this thing it is worth every penny. Highly recommended if you have a back problem.

Comments about Vox MV50 50W Clean Guitar Amp Head:

I like everything about this amp, Paired with the 8" speaker it has enough power to come through a small gig! Takes pedal well, the only con for me is the power on off switch is very tiny and at the back, it would be nice in the front imo.
