1086 MTS Module

By ak37-JGnuI

I recently purchased the RM50H. I could only afford one module right now so I tried the tweed, blacface, deluxe, JTM, Plexi, SL+, XTC and the 1086. I loved all of the modules but most especially the Plexi and Tweed. Then I tried the 1086. I like classic rock/hard rock and some of the mid drive rectifier tones. This module covered so much of that in one space! The drive is defined and very musical. Lowest gain settings cleans up nice. Need some grit, add some gain, need plexi drive hit the gain switch, need some recto tone add some more gain and hit the mid switch. I am absolutely delighted!

I bought this preamp along with 2 other Randall preamps ( Ultra, & SL+ ) and the preamp chassis. This is Dan Donegan's signature preamp, so if you are looking for some serious hard driving sound....this will work great for you! It has a lot of high end gain, so I recommend using a noise suppressor if you kick the gain up over 50%, or you might have a hard time controlling the feedback. It has a really good low end too.....especially for a preamp with a lot of high-end gain.I use it mostly to record, and if you're like me.....ON A BUDGET, this preamp gives you all you'll ever need and more.

After acquiring this awesome bargain from Scratch ?n Dent, I slapped it in my RM50 head. From the very first playing, I knew that it was money well spent. I play various standard and baritone guitars in all tunings with both passive and active pickups thru a B52 2x12 cab with Vintage 30's. The module came to me with JJ ECC83 tubes as did my Blackface module. I initially experimented with Tungsol 12AX7s I pulled from my Plexi module (and usually my tube preference) and tried them in this 1086, but preferred the JJs. I can now achieve an endless array of tones and distortion levels. It is like having a combo of the Plexi module and what I imagine to be either the Ultra or Boogie module. The gain boost and mid voicing switches are so functional, hence the "More voicing options than any other..." description. It really makes one question why all of the overdrive modules don't have these switches installed standard, vs. the single bright switch. It seems logical to have a bright switch on the cleaner modules, but there is a tremendous benefit where both tone and overdrive are concerned with Don Donegan's addition of the two mentioned switches. Also, there are other mods done to this module that would normally have to be done by a tech- different capacitors, etc. Although I am a HUGE Disturbed fan, this module has me in tone heaven with all my axes when playing all heavy styles. This module will not disappoint!!!! And to the poor sap who returned mine, thanx for saving me some bucks. Even at full price,it is considered a reasonable bargain. This module rocks?
