Playing Epi Les Pauls thru a Marshall JTM30 ( all tube ) amp. The Marshall's gain is very old school / scratchy. Great Black Crowes / Stones sound, but NOT a heavy metal amp ; very Plexi sounding. I wanted an overdrive pedal to give me a "Randy Rhodes" sound. I use it WITH my amp gain - ( set on 10 o'clock ), and the pedal controls - left to right - 12 0'clock , 10 o'clock , 12 o'clock. I was trying to make this 2 channel amp into 3 channels ; which I call clean , Crowes , & Rhodes. This pedal NAILED it ! I LOOOVE that it's crisp and doesn't make your tube amp sound like one of those fake modelling amps. The 'pre-bass' is nice. Does what they say. This pedal has a GREAT overdrive and enhances your sound without making it sound digital. Perfect for us 'old-schoolers' , 70's , early 80's stuff. I hope by listing my equipment, it helps to describe the sound. This pedal is a STEAL at this price. So glad I tried it.

This is the best overdrive I've ever used. I came across it and read reviews about it and decided to try it. With the cheap price tag I figured if it wasn't great I wouldn't be at a total loss, but boy was I wrong! This pedal lays it down. I use a Mesa/Boogie Mark 1 running clean and this pedal just sings. Don't confuse it with a Tubescreamer. It's got a more rounded tone than the TS-9. Great pedal and kudos to Rocktron on the value!

GREAT gear

I forgot I had left this on. I plugged in my 5W Epi Valve Jr. modded and heard the sweetest tube sounds coming from the Amp. I thought this is perfect! Why use effects? Then, to my chagrin, I noticed I left the Rocktron Austin Gold on. Then, I said to myself, "that explains it, I guess." I am a tone tweaker. I subsequentially took it off. Hoping to replace.

Great on Vocals

By Tradition To Kill

I play in a metal band. I use this on vocals through one of my mixer aux channels so I can mix in a slight overdrive. This is great. Gives that little boost and growl you need without taking away your bass tone or making your vocal distorted beyond recognition. This thing is awesome.

Great... does what it says it will

This product surprised me by doing exactly what it said it would. It effectively added distortion to my tone, without altering the overall tone of my amp, thus providing an extremely distorted sound that was just a beefed up version of the amp gain.

Good Overdrive

By RiggyZiggy

I bought this overdrive to help my old guitar get a little more bite and the experience so far has been really good. My guitar was born in 1985 and the output of them isn't that great for humbuckers, I don't think yet I could be wrong. With the Austin I can get real high gain sounds close to the likes of Iron Maiden but when I shut it down, I still have all the options I had before. I have never tried any other overdrive pedal, but this one does sound a lot like the original signal boosted and the pre-bass feature has allowed me to turn the muddy overdrive into a brighter kick on my neck pickup. This is a real handy dandy Overdrive, at least in my limited knowledge.

Sounds like a tweed to me

By TommyTomcat

from DFW, TX

I bought this pedal to give me some kind of sweet spot tone when playing low volume gigs (amp on 1-2, drummer playing brushes all night). I've also used it to get tweed type tones when using a blackface style amp. At it's lower settings, this pedal does both pretty well. The thing I dislike about most OD's and distortion pedals is that they compress everything into the midrage frequencies. The pre-bass control works very well at filling out the tone. The pedal also lets the sound of your guitar come through, it's somewhat touch sensitive and cleans up decently (like a tweed amp) when the guitar volume is rolled down. I would compare this pedal to the Snarling Dogs Tweed E Dog, except the AG has more range into woman tone land when the drive is turned up.

Pretty nice

This pedal does exactly what it promises. It gives you a wide range of drive, with a great bluesy growl. The pre-bass is a great idea, and can really enhance your signal in a very subtle way, while being the difference between sounding muddy and sounding beautiful. You can even turn the drive all the way down, turn the level higher, and just use it as a boost with the pre-bass equalizer, as a clean signal enhancer.

Wow!

By Rusted Flowers

I had been looking for a way to add distortion to my sound, but, I wanted to keep the sound of my amp's (a Fender Blues Jr.) natural sound. Upon reading the description for this product I decided to order it on the off-chance that it would do what I wanted. When I recieved the Austin Gold I plugged in and tried it out. I was blown away by how distorted my guitar sounded, and how it sounded just like my amp's gain. The one minor problem is that when I place my Boss tuner in front of the Austin Gold it alters the distortion sound slightly (but, to the defense of this product I had the same problem when I was using a Fuzz Face). This is easily corrected, simply by moving the tuner behind the Austin Gold. Final words: 5 out of 5, man!

Blues at its best

After hearing the tone of my sons Rocktron Zombie I thought I give the Austin Gold a try. Not wanting to spend a lot of money on an overdrive pedal this one fit the bill. After plugging in to my Crate VC-30 tube amp, I was very impressed with the blusey, classic rock type tones capable with this pedal. My home built kit SRV tribute sounds amazing. The Texas Specials really honk through this pedal. And my Jay Turser 335 style semi hollowbody screams classic rock.Great tone, total control, and an affordable price tag add up to one great pedal.

Worth Every Penny

By NotStratMan420

I've tried so many overdrives and distortions and this is honestly the best one I've played as of now. This is an undiscovered masterpiece. You will not be disappointed. This pedal really is transparent. Your true sound comes through and it responds so well to your playing dynamics. I like to keep the drive just under 5 or so. It works well in contrast to my amps distortion. Above 5 it sounds great as well. I would use in that manner for any classic rock on my amps clean channel. If you play blues, this is a great boost and helps add a little grit to your sound. I will not be letting go of this pedal anytime soon. It has really helped me in developing my sound. Way better than any Boss or Digitech products.

Ask me a question

I bought this at the same time as a Palomino 30w 2x12 amp and an Epi Wilshire - the white one. They all sound good together. It's not a bunch of pedals in one - it is easy to find a spot that sounds good, and it works with the amp's exisiting overdrive. It is also solidly built.

Most under-rated overdrive EVER

I've been thru a ton of pricey pedals: Tube Screamers, MXR Booster, Liquid Sunshine, Zakk Wylde OD... this pedal does exactly what I want. Increase sustain and drive in front of an already overdriven amp WITHOUT screwing with your tone! The drive is actually subtle, it's the other two controls that make the tone... especially the pre-bass setting. Genius!Don't spend more, spend smart. This thing is great and will earn its respect over time.

My Search Has Ended

By builderbond

from Cary, NC

I was looking for a good overdrive to use with a solid state amp. I bought one of these based on reviews and was not disapointed. I think it sounds better than my tube amp. A wide range of drive is available as well as the pre-bass adjustment. Customer Service is great. Mine stopped working after one month. It had a short somewhere. I called Rocktron and after checking the serial number they sent me another one. Nice.
