OVERVIEW

Fizzy and buzzy sound is as solid state as you can get ” Metalheads only!

The Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal combines the best of both worlds--tube and analog solid-state distortion! This dual-headed beast can deliver whatever distortion flavor you're wanting. For that tube sound you love, the Silver Dragon has a 12AX7. The Awaken switch rouses the tube for duty while Fire handles the initial distortion drive level of the 12AX7. When you kick in the solid-state side, called Slayer, you combine the tube distortion with solid state distortion to give you tons of gain with tight, punchy distortion, completely tweakable to your liking.

The Intensity control changes the character, sustain, and attack properties that together enhance articulation. The Breath control shapes the symmetry of the solid-state distortion affecting the feel of the distortion. Global controls include Shriek for handling treble frequencies, Roar for low-end control, and an output level control. Includes 13V AC adapter.

FEATURES
  • Dual distortion (tube/solid state)
  • 12AX7 based
  • Control for initial distortion drive level
  • Combines tube with solid-state distortion
  • Intensity and Breath distortion controls
  • Global controls include Shriek (treble), Roar (bass), and an output level control
  • Utilizes a 13V AC adapter (included)

Despite the poor sound sample of this pedal on the site, it really gets many different tones, and great ones at that. The tube channel uses a 12AX7 tube, which is pretty cheap, but gets a very nice gritty crunch, and when pushed can get pretty punchy, and if you're looking for more of a vintage, creamy-sounding overdrive, just turn the tube channel's distortion down to about 7 or 8 o'clock, then roll back the tone on your guitar, then be amazed. The solid state channel is where the dirty, vintage wail turns to shred and shriek. This pedal sounds good with both solid state and tube amplifiers, but with my solid state Kustom, it really did scream more than with my tube one. The amount of gain you get with the second channel is insane, and note definition is nearly flawless.Overall, this pedal has great control, tone, and value. It's one of the best distortion pedals I've ever played. If you have a solid state amp and want thrashing tube clarity in with your distortion, or if you have a tube amp and aren't able to crank it at home to get sweet overdrive, this pedal might just be for you.

I got this and was really excited from all the reviews.

Hooked it up and really loved the sound I was able to get, but as soon as I got it up to volume, it fed back like crazy. I ran it through my Marshall 1987X and it sucked the volume unbelievably. With the pedal on, I could only get about 1/2 the volume on 7 that I could get without the pedal on 3. AND it wouldn't feed back without the pedal, even though it was twice as loud.

Also, is extremely touchy. Once I got it set sound-wise and not feeding back, if I raised ANY settings on either the pedal OR the amp, the feedback issue would start again, and I'd have to take 5 minutes to re-adjust. Sometimes it would also unexpectedly start hissing.

I don't know....maybe I just couldn't figure out how to use it properly, but it just isn't the pedal for me.

Old School Review

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

It's a fun little pedal that you will enjoy for awhile. But don't settle here. This is just a stepping stone of tone.
I had a idea to try this. This pedal will be just great for our younger players on SS amps. I play a Marshall DSL with GT's in the pre amp, A traditional Les Paul and the Shred V with EMG's on greenbacks. I had a blast toying with this and was very pleased. BUT...as we the older purist know you just can't beat the clarity of a Marshall. This pedal will give someone great pleasure until they get a true tube amp. The pedal is hot but not very clear. I did put a delay in the FX to tame it some but it's just not clean enough to top the amp. The lead was spot on but agian it's the same problem we see on all of the lower end pedals of today meaning they are hot for big strings and chord chunking but that's about it. So if anyone wants a taste of what you will have oneday. This pedal is probably the best choice until later times. If you get this you will be happy for awhile and will spend more time playing than you are now I promise.
I took it apart thinking I would change tubes. Don't bother trying....leave it as it is and enjoy.
Simply the best pedal I have found at this price. The other reviews are giving you experience not lies so let them soak in.

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

Running through a solid state amp, this pedal allows me to push my signal so it sounds like I'd be playing real loud, but doesn't disturb the neighbors.
Since it needs to be plugged into its own proprietary 18v AC adapter (included) it doesn't mate well with the other guys on my pedal board... but for getting an adjustable tube sound in my living room, it's very cool.

Wow! This thing has given my old JCM 800 a new lease on life. The lows are tight and punchy and the highs are out of this world, harmonics are so much easier to hit and it sustains for days. Go for it , what have you got to lose?

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

There are a number of tube driven distortion pedals out there and many of them are very good. The Rocktron Silver Dragon is extremely unusual in that it costs fairly little and produces extraordinarily exceptional tones. The quality of the unit is great. One of the things that shows particularly intelligent design is the tube location and housing. It is designed to allow fairly easy access for when the tube finally needs replacing. Much more convenient than most other models out there. Pure tonal brilliance from Rocktron!

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

This pedal is the greatest tube distortion pedal you can find! It has so many awesome features! The tube sound is incredible and the "Slayer" mode just throws so much punch into your sound. You can shape the sound to any kind of distortion you want. I use it from a soft tube distortion to a huge grunge/hard rock distortion. And you can't beat the price either, don't get the H&K (Hughes & Kettner) The silver dragon is AWESOME!

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

I have owned this pedal for about 1 1/2 years now and it is one awsome pedal. I like to play alot of 80's metal and rock, like metallica, and G&R, and this pedal is versatile enough to give me those tight lows and screaching highs. I run my guitar into this pedal, then to an eq, then to the clean channel on my amp. BTW, this pedal sounds nothing like the sound clip on the site...

    Wow.

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

When I got this for my 15th birthday, I was surprised at how it sounded. I have used it non-stop in my guitar rig, and with good reasons. One, I have a Fender Princeton Chorus amplifier, an Ibanez GAX70, and a re-issue DanElectro DanoBlaster that I named "Dani". The amplifier is a solid-state amp, mind you, and the standard distortion on it is nice and creamy an' all, but I wanted more out of it. I used to use my brother's Danelectro FAB "Metal" pedal with it, and it used to be too harsh. Now, the Silver Dragon bridges the gap between the two. It's got the right amount of crunch to it, and I love it. I happen to have it set up enough that, to me, it gets EXACTLY James Hetfield's tone with the Ibanez, even though he uses Marshall amps. This thing will transform your amp, given the right EQ settings. It will turn the smoothest, tamest amp out there into a fire-breathing BEAST, all thanks to the Rocktron Silver Dragon. Also, I have a guitar project in the works with a basswood Squier HM Strat from the '80s, a Bill Lawrence L-500XL humbucker pickup, a bolt-on 24-fret neck, and a Floyd... I can't imagine how crunchy this thing would sound once I get it done...

    smooth!

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

Well, I wanted to have a 2 channel dist, 'cuz I have a small amp and I like the clean channel on it. So I hook this baby up and I have 3 channels now. Awaken which is tube driven ranges from slightly dirty to med-hi gain. the sound is smooth and nice. I only wished the range was broader. Slayer has (as I could hear) it's own gain knob (intensity) and that ranges from pretty dirty to useless noise. after 12 o'clock it's over the top so you don't hear anything but the extra noise.I keep my settings very moderate and I have all the ranges I'd want. I don't expect this to sound like a triple rect. or a soldano or anything else (altough sometimes acts like big muff!!!) so I'm pretty happy about it. for the money, it is a good buy. It will not replace your tube screamer or a tube driver. nor it will replace your DS-1. Silver Dragon has much more character than those pedals, so I would say you've got to use it on a clean channel and have it do the distorting, not the amp.Silver Dragon is not true bypass, but it doesn't slay your tone like vintage ehx pedals such as bad stone or big muff.

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

I wasn't getting the sound I wanted out of my Digitech RP50, so I started looking at analog distortion pedals. I didn't want to buy a piece of junk, so I read tons of reviews, etc and decided to go with the Silver Dragon. With the clean channel on my solid state amp and no other effects, it gives me the metal sound I was looking for. Most of the knobs are cranked up all the way, and I don't have to adjust the volume when switching between modes. I haven't found the exact tone I am looking for, but this pedal alone gets very close. I tried feeding it into the RP50 to see if it could do anything for me, but the RP50 mostly garbled things up. Maybe I'll use the RP50 when I need to use headphones, but it won't sound as good as the Silver Dragon. BTW, I'm playing an Ibanez RG321 with stock pickups. I'll probably be looking at tube amps next.

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

Ok so i have to say this is a great pedal for the price, i bought it used for half the price. Anyway i have played this with my Paul Reed Smith SE model (which is a very balanced guitar for rock/metal) through two different amps that i have played it through. The first one is a Line 6 Spider 15 watt. It is solid state and has a decent clean. Anway the Silver Dragon was able to decently increase the quality in tone and distorion. Pinch harmonics are massively easier to do with this pedal when put through a solid state amp. The silver dragon will add a tube tone to any solid state, however it is not that signifigant and I suggest that you either buy a solid state distortion pedal, or save up and get a twin tube pedal. Putting this through my Bugera 55 watt tube is a whole different world. The distortion is very clear and tone is awesome, and that is without the slayer setting turned on. Turn slayer on and you have an obsene amount of distortion. This pedal will also make the controls on your guitar stand out far moreThe only bad things about this pedal is mine have a bit of extra noise that goes back through. Far more noticable with solid state amps. All in all this pedal is for tube amps ONLY. It is built for metal, but without being paired with other tubes it won't get that high of distortion.

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

This is an awesome pedal. It gives you that natural tube sound out of any regular amp. I have mine running through Digitech RP80 multi effect pedal and then into my Line6 Spider II 12" amp. You can make it sound like a ton of different amps. I got it to sound like, Tool, AC/DC, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Alterbridge, and pretty much any other type alternative to metal. It's a great pedal and a definite must have especially for the price. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

I used to have a few different types of distortion pedals that I use, this one eliminated the need for all of them. It has a rich overdrive and a great crunch on the distortion and its easy to adjust to your sound (I used different color markers to mark the settings for my different styles of music I play). The tube is alse extremly well place so you can replace it with ease. I've put a different tube in to achieve a better overdrive, but it wasn't necessary. I just didn't think it had enough so I swapped it out. Which also makes this convienent because if you're not happy you can just change the tube to your liking

Great Tube Pedal For The Price

Comments about Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal:

I got this pedal a few days ago and I am impressed with the quality given the price. I am running it into a Mesa Boogie combo and with a few minutes of tweaking, I was able to dial in distortion that compliments the amp distortion quite well. There is a lot of hiss on the Slayer channel but it's relative to how much gain you use and you don't need too much gain to saturate. Even with the noise, it's still a great sound/feature. And try the manual's suggested settings!

This is a great pedal. As a first time guitar pedal buyer, I wanted something versatile and worth the money. This pedal fits that. The overdrive is very smooth and goes great with lots of things. The slayer kicks in the biting distortion that metal players love. Everything is controllable to your liking. Great pedal for the money.

Got one, played great about ten days and died-got no volume at all. Exchanged it for new one and the volume is inconsistant-every time I plug it in I've got to adjust the volume level and sometimes it's more quiet than my amps clean channel when its cranked to it's max.

The pedal sounds pretty good. It's a bit noisey in boosted settings but every high gain device is. The best part in my opinion is the pedal has 2 channels.I would recommend this pedal over a lot of other ODs out there both for the money and the sound quality. If you're planning to buy a 2 channel OD/DS, this is a great choice.
