I picked up a natural satin finish at a pawn shop at around 100. However, i still would have paid full price for the bass because its a fantastic deal. The pickup is pretty good considering its passive but some mid boost helps imo. I cant speak on whether or not this is a good bass out of the box so set up could be needed. Also the frets are buzzing but its inaudable once its amplified and can be stopped if you ask your luthier (or take the risk of doing it yourself o.o) to raise the action when they set it up. My one true problem is that the wood joints on the body arent lined up parallel to the neck (see photo).

Just wanted to warn anyone who might get stuck in the same position I'm in. I ordered the guitar online based on the photos. For his birthday, my son wanted a simple, entry-level bass with a natural wood look. That's what I thought I was ordering based on the website's photos for "satin natural finish." Now go to the Dean web site and see what it REALLY looks like. That's what I received, and was highly disappointed. I bet you would be too. It's not "natural" at all--it's a hideous tan paint with no sheen, no color, and no wood grain showing through. Worst of all, if I don't want to exchange it, they tell me I have to pay the return shipping AND forfeit the cost of them shipping it to me in the first place. Because their incorrect photo isn't their problem, it's mine.

GOOD TONE for great price!

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have everything from a $99 j-bass I upgraded with dimarzio's to $2200 custom jobs. THIS IS GREAT from factory, especially for $139! I automatically upgrade ALL my instrument jacks to $6 switchcraft input jacks, as I hate the two cent factory jacks most factories put in, and plan to drop in a fatter and larger bridge in the future for fun and giggles. the neck plays VERY nicely, smoothly. its lightweight. The tone control has a wider range than ANY FENDER under $800.... overall I LOVE IT!

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

this is a sweet bass, I tried it at the store for a week, kept going back until I bought it. the one pickup has one volume and one tone control. the TC is better than fender's! I have several other basses, including a fender jazz bass, peavey BXP, cort, a couple of schecters, a custom hollow body 5 string fretless: THIS IS MY NEW favorite, the voice is sweet, has good clear highs and retain the lows! I recommend this to any bassist! its pretty, too!

Review for the price... Seriously this bass is top quality!

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass to learn as a beginner. I play a wide variety of instruments and I was expecting a bass in this price range to be of lesser quality than something in the 2-300 dollar range. I was pleasantly suprised when this arrived at my door. Yes the finish is basic. Yes it's a bolt on neck, and yes there is only one soap bar pickup. But I'm an experienced musician and learning to play this thing over the past few days has been an absolute joy! I'm seriously considering buying another just so someone else can jam along with me... but I should probably spend that on more soft synths.

Great Beginner Bass

By BassistSager

from Pensacola, FL

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

First bass I owned. Great bass for the price, sounds great, pretty heavy compared to other bass guitars. I got it for my birthday in the pack, I loved it, fret buzz is pretty annoying, but when you figure out how to place your fingers on the fretboard. Buy it for your kid who wants to learn bass. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I wouldnt want this bass at all!! if your absolutely broke or if your kid quits easily and wants to try bass, get it. If your highly interested in bass and all you can afford is this, get a job and save. its a waste of money. This bass is sooo slow, the input jack just isnt designed well at all, and it is awkward to play and move. Overall it sucks. Get a cheaper ltd, schecter, or ibanez. Dean only has one good thing- made in USA

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass four years ago when i started playing guitar. I was in love with it the second i unpackaged it and plugged it in. All around its an amazing bass, but it does have its cons just like everything else in life. My only complaint was the insane amount of frett buzz, but this is a quick fix just raise the saddles a bit and control how hard youre playing, also buying different gauge strings can help. This is the only bass ive owned since then and i still have no complaints. It cant compair to a stingray or any other higher end bass, but with my experience playing other basses from time to time, it feels and plays as great as any other. I would recomend this bass to anyone, begginer, or experienced.

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I love the sound of this bass! My guitar teacher has a bass worth 5 times as much and he says this bass sounds better. It has a long substain, I can't detect any decay over a long, slow measure. I'm thinking this will be my first and last bass as I've not heard anything better yet. I don't know if they're all this good but mine is! For the money, it's a no brainer.

Best For Value

By Josh Adams of Bruton

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have recently recieved this bass almost a month ago now and to my suprise, the Bass rivals a lot of the other big named basses out there and the price is absolutely amazing. It comes with a crappy input jack, bad tuning knobs, but somewhat decent strings. First off replaced the standard strings with Ernie Ball Custom Gauge Slinky strings once I had officially broken the other ones in. The fret buzz can be eliminated by getting a simple new bridge ANY new bridge will completely eliminate the buzz. Great product, very satisfied!

Been playing bass for 7 months, and I'm glad it was the Edge that got me into this :) It's an incredibly standard bass, but that's the best thing about the bass: its simplicity. One volume knob, one tone knob, and one soap bar pickup make this simple bass the number one choice for anyone looking to start playing :D While any experienced bassist or longtime musician may be able to start off with something more complex, the simplistic Edge is definately a good gateway for hopefully more years of playing bass ^^ Add to the fact that it can play almost any genre of music, and you've got a versatile little buddy to jam with for years :)

I bought this bass recently from MF as damaged item. It was sold as damaged because of a bad tuning peg. Simple design, one pickup, one volume and one tone control. This is all most bass players need. I got the metalic red which is much better looking than it appears on MF website. Quality of build and finish is good, no sharp frets, ect.

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've had this bass for about a year now, this is the bass I bought to learn on. And for learning purposes its done a great job. It's fairly simple (hence the 2.5 on features) but it gets the job done. Sounds pretty good for any kind of music you want to play, and for the price it's absolutely outstanding. However, it's not a bass that you can keep for a long time. It'll last for a year, year and a half tops before you'll outgrow it and want something better. But if you are thinking about learning bass, it's best to buy this first to see if you enjoy playing bass. If you're looking for a backup or an upgrade, look elsewhere.

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have owned 7 other basses since I began playing in 1964. (a Tobias 5, a Hamer Cruise, 2 Fenders: Tele & Jazz and 3 Gibsons: an EB0, Thunderbird & Grabber) My 8th, the Dean Edge 09 Bass, plays and sounds as good as any of them. It's a comfortable and light weight axe with a fast, slim neck. For the money, you can't go wrong. This instrument is very well made and an extremely satisfying piece of equipment. If you already own a bass and are looking for a great 4-string back-up, THIS is it. Anyone looking for THE best value in a 4-string Bass need look no further. My best advice: Get a good HSC, even if it costs as much or more, it will be worth it. Personally, I bought (& prefer) the Mahogany version, as I like a nice flawless wood grain. Finally, I'd also recommend Dunlop Strap-Loks. You can spend more but the Q is: WHY?

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This is my 1st bass and I like the way it sounds through my peavey max 126 bass amp. This is a very good bass for a beginner to start with. I've gotten used to how the bass feels and now I dont have to worry so much about fret buzz. In the beginning for a starter you'll worry about frett buzz but when you learn how to position your hands it wont be a big deal. If you want to get a good beginners bass at an affordable rate then get this bass. Its been a couple of months and I've had no problems with it. I love the way it sounds. Buy it along with a peavey max 126 bass amp (if your a beginner) and you'll have a nice clean sound and if you want a smooth sound then just click in the vintage mode on the amp and put the nob up half way on the volume of the amp and on the vintage setting then crank up the volume on your bass and crank up the tone knob a little bit and have a good time. GET IT!!!

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I'm an older ex weekend warrior who has played in bands for years. I've owned many other basses including Fender P-bass, Hamer Cruisebass, and Carvin LB-70 to name a few. I've been out of the music scene for awhile but really missed having a bass around to mess around with so I ordered this one in the satin finish. I knew what I was getting because I had been to Dean's website where they have accurate pics of this bass. I wasn't disappointed! This bass is an amazing value for the money. The tone is great right out of the box. Action is right where I like it. No fret buzz as long as you are fretting properly. I did change the strings right away to black nylon tape wounds. They lend a smooth attack (almost like a double bass) and are super easy on the fingers yet still get that P-bass like growl if you open the tone knob up.

Construction is very good especially for the money, fit and finish is great except for the fret work. I'll need to file down the fret ends as they are a bit too long for the (nice) rosewood fretboard. They aren't sharp or dangerous so it could be worse and using proper technique you'd hardly notice it. The only other gripe is the tuners. They look nice but don't hold tuning for long periods of time. I end up having to re-tune the bass nearly every day. The tuner on the G string could be smoother as turning tension goes from tight to loose and back to tight as it turns. These are really minor complaints for such a low cost bass.

The finish is really good. It appears they put a matching basswood veneer on the top and back so you can't even see the slab joints. I wouldn't hesitate to take this on stage, it looks that good with the black tuners, bridge, knobs, and strings (in my case). The neck is nice and thin and fairly fast with a satin finish on the back of the neck.

The electronics are way above average for this price range. The pickup, volume and tone knobs work together very well to give a wide variety of tones.

Comments about Dean Edge 09 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I was quite pleasantly surprised. The bass was nicely set up and ready to play right out of the box. I tuned it up and found the action very comfortable and the intonation spot on.
A few sharp fret edges but other than than that I am quite pleased. Fit and finish is very good for a guitar in this price range.
I got the natural satin finish and you can see the laminated top and back as well as the imperfection in the wood grain but I wasn't looking for a show stopper, I just needed a bass for some home recording projects.
Although I don't play bass, (but I have played guitar for over 45 years), I think this guitar is very stage worthy for the beginner or someone who doesn't want to spend a lot.
Well worth the $$$. Plus a Coupon on top of that really made this quite a deal.
Well done Dean and MF :)
