OVERVIEW

Quality acoustic-style bass with warm electric outpit.

The Dean Pace Contra Upright Bass is a slender upright electric four-string bass with a warm, charming output that is ideal for a wide variety of musical idioms. It is for the bluegrass player who prefers not to drag a giagantic double bass around. It is for the jazz musician whose treasured hand-carved instrument is not worth risking the perils of the gin joint. It is for the Americana musican who wants to invoke the sound and feel of the acoustic bass without the potentially prohibitive price point of a fine acoustic bass.

It features a maple top/body, a bolt-on maple neck, an ebonized curved fingerboard, side dot inlays, sealed Die Cast tuners, black hardware, piezo transducer, DMT active Contra preamp system, and more!

Comments about Dean Pace Contra Electric Upright Bass:

Being a bass player in bluegrass, I've had a Kay and an NX, but currently play a Fender Jazz. For some reason, I got the urge to go back to the upright style, primarily for the sound. I ordered this Contra and just got to use it this past weekend on two jobs. I quickly remembered why I switched from upright to electric bass. These things are a pain to transport, (too long to lay in the trunk), hand cramps abound (whaa, whaa, whaa), but not due to any flaw with this instrument. The neck has the right feel, and the action was good out of the box. No problem with intonation. The tone was fairly authentic, only missing the the doghouse "thump" that can only be produced by the large body of the real thing. However, the tone of this instrument is very good. I'd rate it as good, if not better, than the NX I had. Really, the only complaint I have, is the incredibly "useless" gig bag they sent. The description says it includes a lightweight case, but it's really a bag. No compartments for accessories. No opening for the handle like the bag supplied with the Stagg EDB. Actually, it appears that this Contra and the Stagg EDB come off the same assembly line. Details and specs indicate these identical. I would recommend the Stagg simply for the superior designed carrying bag.

Comments about Dean Pace Contra Electric Upright Bass:

I recently bought one of these hoping it wouldn't live down to the reviews I have been able to find thus far...and I must say I have been very pleasantly surprised. this bass has a decent pickup, the active onboard pre-amp makes a world of difference, far lighter than I expected and yes the bag it comes with is a bag, not a case however it does come with a shoulder strap, and a pocket inside for a tuner, rosin (yes I have bowed it) and cable. not much else so you have to carry your bow or have another case for that, but this is a low price EUB, not the 3K versions. I have been quite happy with it so far, set up was good right out of the box, after tuning the flatwound (love them) strings. it stays in tune fairly well for having new strings. Now I thought I would be a fan of the supports that you see attached, well, I'm not. luckily they are detachable and thusly I being a smaller guy (5'6") can get closer to the instrument and it feels much more comfortable than the double basses I have played. I have used it at a church event and at home so far and just love the sound. yes its not a double bass but for the money they got it fairly close in sound, even the response with the bow is decent for what it is. overall....quite happy with mine.

Comments about Dean Pace Contra Electric Upright Bass:

This is the first instrument that I have ever bought without playing first. I was hesitant to buy it at first but decided to take a chance. I am writing this to help someone else who may be on the fence about buying. It came in it's gig bag in a box. It was ready to go right out of the box. For an inexpensive instrument it plays well and was setup well. I would get on stage with this without hesitation. -----One caveat though, for those of you who are choosing an electric upright as an alternative to the "total body exercise" of a 3/4 or double bass. I would choose a model that is on a stand. The stand would allow you to play it with the least amount of stress on your body from both a seated and standing position.
