Comments about Fender American Standard Hand-Stained Ash Jazz Bass with Maple Fretboard:

I could not be more pleased with this purchase. One thing I would mention, the Bass is lighter than I expected. Must be the ash body. It seems lighter than the old Jazz (Alder body) I used to play. That is not a bad thing, just kinda unexpected. The instrument is very comfortable to play, but I expected that ... it's why I bought a Jazz.

I don't play out any longer, but some guys at work play and I have a few friends in my home town that are playing out again. I'm just doodling at home right now, but I'm thinking of getting out and playing with others again ... I would be completely confident (and honestly pretty darn proud) taking this instrument into any situation that comes up.
I had an American Standard Jazz back in the '90s and loved it. This Bass is nicer and a definite upgrade. The bridge is a huge improvement over the 'standard' Fender bridge on the old Bass, string thru body is very nice and the higher mass does seem to add sustain. It also looks 'meatier' . The hand rubbed mahogany stain and satin finish is outstanding, it doesn't make it play or sound any better ... but lets be honest -- looks matter. This is an absolutely beautiful instrument. I am very impressed with the case it comes with as well, far and away the best case I've ever owned. I love the strings that it came with, generally my first move with a new Bass is installing a set of Ernie Ball Power Slinkys to get the .110 E string, this comes with a .110 E ... Fender must love me.
Fit and finish on mine is perfect. The action is killer, low and fast with absolutely no fret buzz. The damned thing was in tune right out of the box. Intonation is spot on. My only bitch (and I'm reaching here) is that I didn't have to fiddle with anything ... I kinda enjoy tweaking a new Bass ... I do not believe there is a single thing I could do to make this instrument play, feel or sound any more perfect. It has the classic Jazz sound, it growls when I want and I can get all the warmth I could ever ask for. I cannot rate this instrument any higher here, Fender got this one right.
It's an American Standard so it costs a decent penny but, for me, it was worth it. Personally I am rarely able to spend this much on anything and not have some small tinge of buyer's remorse ... but once I got this out of the box I had zero regrets. This Bass was well worth every dollar I spent. I will own this Bass for the rest of my life.
