OVERVIEW

Great sound, range and playability in this fretless beauty.

Over 30 years ago, the SR established Ibanez as the leader in innovative bass building. Throughout the years, we’ve made fretless versions of this classic for a limited number of esteemed Ibanez artists. Now, the Ibanez Bass Workshop makes this much sought after option available to SR players everywhere with the introduction of the SR Portamento. The SR Portamento offers a Rosewood fingerboard that extends the length of the standard SR neck to a hefty 30-fret length. Several years in the making, the SR Portamento's new AeroSilk piezo system delivers an uncanny touch of hollow-bodied openness, and realizes the innovative Upright Double Bass sound to blend into the mix that both inspires and redefines the role of the solid body bass.

Comments about Ibanez SRF706 6-String Fretless Electric Bass Guitar:

Looks like I'm the first reviewer of this bass, so here goes nothing.
This is the second SRF series bass I have bought. I bought the 5 string version on a whim to learn to play fretless and fell in love with how these basses sounded and played. The SRF706 comes with, D'addario nickelwound flats string on, a set of hex/ Allen wrenches, and a straight-to right angle instrument cable. The flatwound strings are good strings, but I prefer to use La Bella white nylon rounds. It also looks great with the oil finish and the visible wood grain, not to mention the fret marker inlays under the B string so you can fool people into thinking you're playing an unlined :).

Electronics are passive with an active piezo, meaning the bartolini's ( mk series)p-ups dont have as much output as the piezo. It has Volume controls for each pickup, as well as a Piezo blend knob, bass boost/cut and a treble boost/cut.

One and only issue is with the input jack. The wires and preamp are kind of jumbled inside the cavity leading to scratchy pots on the piezo controls and noise from insecure cable in the jack. Had to get the input and pot in the 5 string fixed and fear I'll have to the same with the 6. All in all, this bass is as versatile as fretless basses get,it can mimic upright tones like it was designed for (it has 30 "frets"), is perfect for jazz, rock, country, and more. I use these basses in a technical death metal band, and they more than cut through the mix with drums and 7 string guitars in C# Standard with a low G#. Ibanez basses are truly the best at their price point.
