- Fun To Play
- Good Feel
- Solid Electronics
- No Upright 'thump'
- Electric Fretless Sound
Comments about Kydd Basses Carry-On Upright Bass:
3 stars for sound, 5 stars for looks and construction and portability. Playing for 40 years, fretless, fretted and upright, always looking for an upright sound with the convenience of an electric upright. This instrument is beautiful and faultlessly made, but I found the sound to be that of an electric fretless, no matter how I tweaked it. Tons of growl but little 'thump'. It has dual piezo pads that fit under and are held down by, the bridge. I played it through my SWR Triad (15", 10" and tweeter/horn) with the SWR Studio 220 amp (4 bands sweepable EQ plus bass and treble), as well as an SWR LA15. No EQ combination could change what seems to be essentially the pickup's qualities. I tried moving the pickups a bit, no improvement. Also, the short scale neck, while making for an incredibly light and easily portable instrument, definitely required adjusting one's usual upright finger positioning, and this would take a real commitment. It is so beautiful and well made, I really wanted it to work, but it didn't give me what I wanted.
I found a used Steinberger NXT EUB and it has got the sound and feel I want, a good 'thump' and close to upright sound, with nice features of its own. (A caveat about the NXT - it did not like the available lighter weight strings ('contemporary') - way too much buzz and lost the thump - stick with the 'traditionals'....
I will also say, that if you're looking for an electric fretless sound, with an EUB body, the Kydd is great....but strongly consider trying the full scale 42" model, unless smallest size is key,and willingness to adjust your finger positioning is there. It's very possible that the 42" model might have more 'thump', but I didn't try out that one. The MF's 45 day tryout is very generous and helpful when searching for 'that sound'.
