OVERVIEW

Gorgeous quilt maple body with elaborate neck inlay and Fishman electronics.

The Dragonfly Fretless is beautiful in appearance, smooth in performance and has great tone. Only with the Dragonfly Fretless do you get real quilt maple on the top, back and sides. The brighter and clearer tone that this provides is one of the reasons so many people have selected the Dragonfly Fretless. Of course you also get an amazing looking Dragonfly accented vine inlay that adorns the fingerboard. It is made from real abalone and pearl for the ultimate in instrument extravagance.

Other upgrades on the Dragonfly Fretless includes hand scalloped bracing, a double adjustable truss rod and dual graphite reinforcement rods for added neck stability and longevity. Like with all of Michael Kelly basses you get improved feel with a 34" scale for the perfect string response. The Dragonfly Fretless also has Michael Kelly's popular Top Dot markers. These are small stealth-like dots that show where each fret would normally be. They are hidden for a clean look, but a great resource when you need them.

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 4 Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I've owned a few of these. The previous models were built in Korea and had a better build quality and inlay work. These are built in China. I had to send three of these back for various major issues. The inlays on the current models are cheap looking and poorly done. If it was not for the great price I got this would have been returned.

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 4 Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass:

Overall I love this bass. Great tone, stays in tune, great feel, not too heavy. Although it has a pickup and built in EQ I usually play acoustic only for practice and composing. I switch to my fretless P bass when jamming or recording. The finish is great and the intricate inlay on the neck is spectacular. I've had other acoustic basses but this is the best. I use nylon wound strings for smoothness.

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 4 Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I've read both reviews of this bass here, and I don't understand the negative comment about build quality on one of the comments. I've been playing bass for over 40 years and have had my share of poor build qualities on guitars and basses - especially from the 70's - and this bass is not poor build quality. Both reviews here are from 2014, so there's a possibility that manufacturing has improved since. All I can say is that I received my 2018 Dragonfly fretless and it was stunning. It's smokeburst, so imperfections would be easy to see. I did not see any. The inlays look great, and do not look cheap in my opinion. Aside from the aesthetics of this bass, the playability was good out of the box. While I love roundwounds on my Ric, I'd prefer flats on this fretless. The action was average, and I'll need to set it up - like any other bass/guitar - to my preferences. The preamp on it is excellent, and thankfully it uses 9v batteries instead of the flat CR3022 type that are common on guitar preamps. The preamp pivots with the release of the clasp, making battery changes quick. It also has a built in tuner. Some of the older Dragonfly basses did not come equipped with strap buttons on both sides, requiring the neck strap adapter. This one has the 2nd strap button near the heel of the neck. That was a pleasant surprise! Bottom line is that this was an excellent value at this price point and I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
