I received my Bela Fleck instructional video today. Very cool!First, kudos to Musicians Friend. Their web site said it was in stockand it shipped out immediately. I received it within a week viastandard ups ground delivery. I see music as a life long learning experience that consists of aseries of plateaus. The challenge is to get to the next plateau, andthis tape will definitely get you there. The first surprise was that the Bela on the tape is not thethirty-something guy on the cover. Instead it is the just slightlypost-teenage version. Of course I looked and found the tape was from1984. I wish I bought it in 1984. The tape and tablature consists of 6 tunes and a few extra minutes ofBela's insights on playing. However, if you learn these songs youwon't just be adding 6 new songs to your repertoire. Instead you willdiscover dozens of new techniques including Scruggs Tuners, wrappingyour thumb to fret the fifth string, up the neck riffs, single stringtriplets, muting, percussive pull-offs, alternate tunings and more. Not only that you will play some blues, bluegrass, melodic, Irish, andJazzy stuff. I was in new territory within and hour of watching thetape, and that is a great place to be. The tape features a lot of split screen photography so you can see theright and left hands in close up. Tunes include Texas Barbecue, cool song with an old timey feel thatuses Scruggs Tuners.Brilliancy, a melodic tune with a nifty up the neck B part. A very funky, bluesy version of John Henry that incorporates a twonote drone throughout based on guitar picking techniques. I am solooking forward to learning this one. Natural Bridge Suite - Part 2. Classic Bela Fleck style song. Jazzywith latin feeling riffs as well. The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Great Irish song with killertriplets. Sammy's Blues. A very simple blues tune with some samples ofimprovisation thrown in. This is definitely not a tape for beginners, but I certainly thinkintermediate players could benefit greatly from it. If you've beenplaying for a while don't be intimidated. Even if you pick up a fewnew things it will be well worth it. There is nothing quite likeseeing the music being played to get a better understanding of theeconomy of hand motion and the strategic use of both picking andfretting hands. If you have been thinking of getting this tape, think no more and getit as soon as possible. It would be great if he would release anotherone.
