Kruspe style wrap
A horn with a Kruspe style wrap has the 4th valve on the near end of the other valve. The Kruspe wrap is the basis of modern large bell horns.Hand-lapped rotary valves and slides
Rotary valves and slides that have been hand-lapped are airtight and have smooth action.Articulated key levers
Articulated key levers have responsive motion.Hammered and annealed bell
Hammering and annealing are processes so important to the instrument's acoustic characteristics that Yamaha employs computer-controlled equipment to ensure consistently superior sound. Hammering enables bells to have a rich, resonant tone that blends beautifully with other instruments. Annealing is a cooling and heating process that makes it easier to control the acoustics of the instrument.Cyclical bore
A cyclical bore is a perfectly cylindrical tubing assembly in combination with a conical mouthpipe and bell system. This allows for consistent air flow throughout the horn.Tapered valves
Tapered valves wear for a long time without air leakage.Excellent sound in all registers
The combination of the secure high register, strong projection, and quick attack of the Bb horn with the rich, warm timbre of the F horn make the double horn ideal for most playing situations.

great horn...

This horn is very freeblowing and has a rich, dark sound without being too heavy, as a conn tends to be. Great response even in the troublesome registers. I also tend to have difficulty on the high A just as another reviewer mentioned. Ab's and Bb's are superb but the A is quite difficult to center. Overall, beautiful instrument well worth the cost.

A Really Good Horn

By

I purchased my Yamaha 668 ND (Nickle, Detachable bell) a while ago. It is a really good horn. Intonation is good, A and D in the staff are a little sharp, so I flat them with my hand. This isn't really a problem, and probably varies player to player. There was a small cosmetic defect (welding maybe?) but wasn't worth complaining about. The case is really nice and has space for mutes and such. The tone is dark and full, you can get more volume before the tone disintegrates than my old horn (i.e. smaller horns). The low register really plays out, I had to get used to the upper register because it plays different. It feels lighter (in weight) than the Conn 8D. Valves and slides all work nice, and the adjustable trigger is nice too. Over all it is a good horn, as expected. There are better horns (and specialty horns) out there, but for the price range, I feel this Yamaha may be the best deal.
