Comments about LP Aspire Wood Conga Chrome Hardware:

Love this conga, have it over 2 months now, beautifully made, the sound is great, I even did some home recording with it and turned out really nice. easy to tune (I tuned it to C), I play it in church along with my drumset every Sunday - sounds loud and clear enough even without a mike.

Comments about LP Aspire Wood Conga Chrome Hardware:

I have been taking hand drumming classes at my local community college and love it. Everyone in the class that has a conga has LP Aspire drums. The range of drumming experience is from 30 years to lest than a year. Some of the students that have a variety of more expensive drums all say that the Aspire is there favorite because of the tone. I am looking forward to many years of drumming pleasure with my Aspire.

I am a novice player and my wife bought me this drum for Christmas. I am very pleased with the quality and sound. I recently went out and purchased the quinto to match the conga and have been very pleased with both!

Comments about LP Aspire Wood Conga Chrome Hardware:

                Addendum to my other review:

Note that the Aspire quinto and conga have five lugs. The rims of all three are high quality and (in contrast to some Aspire reviews from years ago) are very sturdy and will not bend. As for the heads, they tend to vary on a catch-as-catch-can basis. The heads on my quinto and tumba are translucent while the head on my conga has the more familiar rawhide look. The four other Aspires i have seen also have the rawhide look. The heads all sound fine. Others recommend swapping the heads for mule or cow, or even synthetic. It's an option but I'm fine with what I have.

The head on the 12" is fine for contemporary tunings but if you want to go with the old-style lower tunings which need to be a touch more rigid, I would say that the hide is a touch thin. I personally do not have a problem with this. If I were to change the heads on the Aspires, chances are that I would buy factory heads, mainly because these are not top tier drums. If I were to move up to Matadors or better, I would buy the hides by preferred gauges and mount them on the rings myself. (How-to videos are available online.)

I have a nice coat of palm oil on both sides of the heads as well as on the wooden rims of the shells and this helps the tone. It takes around a day for the oil to do its job and the oily feel goes away within a few hours.

Comments about LP Aspire Wood Conga Chrome Hardware:

I've been an active musician for far longer than I would confess but on a musician's budget, everything went into my Boogies, guitar gear, PAs and recording. I wanted a set of congas ever since the Woodstock movie came out and Soul Sacrifice stole the film. Congas just never made it to the top of the list until a few months ago. If I had the funds I would go with a set of Matadors, falling back on MF's exclusive LP Performer line, but I ended up with an Aspire 10 and 11, the filling out the set with a 12". Including the 10 & 11 / bongos / dual stan special, a bongo mount, the 12, a second dual stand, and three Road Runner bags, this totaled under a G over a span of several months (plus I added a couple of mic stands and a pair of Shure PGA56s along the way). I am very happy with them.

Other than the price, the main difference is that the interior of the drums reveal slaves with beveled edges, forming V-grooves between the staves. They are smoothly sanded, but they have not been lathed internally. Also, the bass undertone is pretty much the same between the three drums, so floor micing doesn't help much. Overall, the drums are musical and they sound great, the rims and lugs do a great job (there are no differences in pitch between lug points, which means that the rims are heavy enough to do the job), and the price is a slam-dunk. In hindsight, if I could have hung on long enough to save up another 3 I would have gone with a set of three Performers, but I can't complain. I am using these drums for recording and for doing a few specialty numbers for gigs, but I am definitely on a learning curve. I do have a slight advantage in playing lead guitar with the left hand or lead keyboards with the right, as the rhythms and control come naturally, but I'm having to burn in the coordination and the hand-order in which to play what I want to achieve, but there are plenty of videos out there for training.

My advice: If you don't have the coin or chops, go with Aspire.

Excellent drum. I use it as a requinto with four Performer Series drums that include an extra tumba with lower tuning. Makes a great melodic set for intermediate players.
