The Ludwig Super Classic Drumkit has been an absolute legend in drumming lore for over a half century. Just viewing one conjurs the visions of such greats as Joe Morello, Roy Haynes, Ray Bauduc, and, of course, Buddy Rich smacking their sticks against Ludwig Whitecalf. However, in February, 1964, one elfin figure with a Price Valient coif was gyrating behind a Black Oyster set of Super Classics. It cannot be denied that, since that day, Ringo Starr will forever be associated with this configuration. Thus, in the mid-90s, the drumkit once dubbed Super Classic (or Downbeat) was now "The Fab Four" Outfit. Mine is finished in Blue Sparkle and looks absolutely pristine. The toms are ink stamped Feb 2, '03, the snare drum's date is illegible, and the bass drum has no stamp. This is one of the best sounding kits I have ever played: responsive, lively and sensitive (due to the number of plies and 45 degree edges), but also quite resonant (due to the relative thinness of the shells). They record very well and I am very happy with their sound on the live 4 track recording I had made with my bands. They're not large drums...but they sound HUGE (especially the bass drum)! Construction, for the most part, is excellent: the grain on the drums' interiors is certainly breathtaking. I've never been completely impressed with Ludwig's bearing edges, but these are a dramatic improvement over the ones they cut during the eighties. For a kit that sounds (in my humble opinion) better than a Drum Workshop and costs much less, Ludwig is definitely a viable option. You see, history CAN be bought...and I think you'll be pleased it can.

I can compare this kit to my original black oyster pearl gold badge '64 kit in sound and tone. The kick is solid and booming with great projection from the toms. The snare isn't as sensitive or responsive as the 64 snare but still projects well with a good crack to it. The hardware is a huge step up when it comes to set-up and stage performance but I perfer my '64 Ludwig set because of the vintage value if you can even find one.

RE: the bloke who gave it a rubbish rating

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

This is a quality drum kit, a real drum kit not any of this pork pie custom nonsense, this drum kit is nearly the same as the ones used by Ringo star and Keith Moon in the early sixties who are you to say its rubbish. Another thing who would want to put a ludwig like that on a rack anyway it would look stupid. If you really wanted to play rack mounted drum kits then u should've been bland and got a pearl or tama not a classic drum kit like the ludwig fab 4

I got this set at a local music store because it was marked wrong, but if I had the cash I would still pay the money that it's worth. It's a perfect setup for me. Sounds amazing and is a great set for experienced players that want that good looking set.

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

This set sounds like nothing else on your block guaranteed. It's warm but packs a punch, and it's about as versatile as a Swiss knife. The 4-piece setup helps you think easier when filling and jamming, but that might just be me. I purchased new hardware because I wasn't satisfied with what came with it. Overall, a great set!

Fab 4 w/22

By Big Wave

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

This drum set was everything I wanted and more. The response on all the drums (including kick) is out of control. The first day I had it I was playing faster and more precise than ever. Also, if you want a great vintage sound, Ludwig's the way to go. I have this kit paired up with a Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride and Hi-Hats and it sounds like I'm playing on a '50s James Brown album. It's also good for jazz. Definitely recommend this to someone looking for a great vintage sounding kit.

Close But No Cigar

By Hal Rice

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

Drum quality is very good. Cymbal/Hi-hat stands are not standard size that can be used with a rack system such as Pearl. Speedking is a joke compared to older Speedking. I like Ludwig Drums, but next set will be Pork Pie at really the same price as Ludwig after you add on two toms and replace the crappy hardware with Pearl and DW stands and pedals....

Ludwig Classic Maple

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

I ordered a classic maple kit after selling my Rogers kit with Dynasonic snare(original owner from late 60's). The Ludwigs are great sounding, look great, and the hardware is excellent. I ordered an 8x12 tt; 14x14 ft; 16x16 ft with a 14x22 bd, 5x14 maple snare (LS401TM) and a supraphonic (LM400KTM. this kit rocks; big sound, cool look, great value for the money

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

Ludwig makes the best drums you can find anywhere. I've played all brands of drums and none of the others compare to the sound quality of Ludwig. I had been playing a Pearl set which was pretty decent but it was no comparison to this one. The best thing for me is the simplified 4-Piece, you can just get a bette rsoun out of 4-Pieces. If you really want a good set that can give you everything you'll ever need then buy this one.

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

Just switched to Ludwig after playing an excellent Japanese drum (3 kits) for over 30 years. These are lighter, and much more "vintage jazz" sounding than what I am used to. As I had plenty of hardware and only ordered a shell pack, I cannot evaluate the Ludwig hardware. I have the bebop sizes and they are far more flexible than you might think. I am not muffling, so there is plenty of sound. The older I get, the more I like an 18 inch bass drum, especially in a stairwell. These are great drums at a fair price. Good job, Ludwig. .

Ludwig: classic, classy, timeless

By Anonymous

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

The Ludwig Classic Maple set is an outstanding deal. The toms are warm, clear, and responsive. The bass has just enough boom and punch. The 14" depth allows quicker footwork with less effort. These are classic sizes that will suit almost any genre. Having played Pearl for nearly 20 years, I finally made the switch to Ludwig. The only problem I had was getting used to the tom mount adjustment, but after a few minutes, got the tom positioned just right. The memory lock on the tom holder is a great feature that allows easy setup. I suggest ordering 3 more for the floor tom legs. I was able to custom order my set in green sparkle with classic lugs and curved spurs for a vintage look. I pair them with Supraphonic snares (LM400 and LM402). Ludwig is back and the Classic Maples are better than ever at such an affordable price.

Sounds Amazing

By louderspace

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

Enjoy vintage sounds with modern quality. This drum kit has amazing sustain and tone. I've owned it for 2 years and it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. If you want to hear what it sounds like, search for Bronze Fawn in google and you'll hear our new album featuring this exact kit. I miked the top and bottom of the toms and snare (remember to reverse the polarity on the bottom mikes) and used an SM91A in front of the kick. Don't cut a hole in the front head if you want that phat bonham/808 bass sound. Enjoy!

sometimes, an amateur knows from what he speaks..

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

I "play" drums (for fun and recreation). I'm not with a band. I can't play like Bonzo, Carmine (Appice), or anyone like 'em. But, I've also talked to people over the years, and my best friend who IS a drummer will attest to my knowledge and understanding of the different brands of drums. While I'm enamored over the sound and apparent quality of DW and Ayotte, I'm from the old school, and as far as I'm concerned, Ludwig was, is, and always WILL be the quintessential rock'n roll drum. I bought a (circa) 1967 set of "Lud's" as a collector's item a few years ago, and if I had the proper skills, these drums would more than make a statement. To all who disagree, cool; you're entitled to an opinion, too. But I'm gonna ask my "$64,000,000 rhetorical question." We all know that from a purely historical standpoint, Ringo Starr has been credited with putting Ludwig on the map. Name the ONE drummer who did the same for Pearl and Tama.

Superclassics Live Up To Reputation

By Stax-GB0yO

from Columbia, SC

Comments about Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple Drum Set with 22" Kick:

Todays Ludwig Superclassic drums live up to 60's legendary sound. Another review here said these drums sound Big and they sure do! I prefer these 4 ply Maple/Poplar Superclassics to the 9 ply all maple Classic series of today. The superclassics are the most resonant drums I've ever played. A wide-open sound that thunders. The 9 ply classics sound great, but it's a more controlled, focused sound. The snare is very sensitive and great for rock or jazz. I use the snare with my Ludwig Classic Birch Jazz kit. The bass has power and punch. The 13" tom is very easy to tune. It has a wide range. The 16" floor tom is Loud, tremendous bottom range. These are great looking and sounding professional drums. Highly recommended.
