Mapex MPX 14 x 5.5 inch natural maple snare review. My concern about the drum hoops was well founded. Be aware the this drum does NOT come with 2.3 mm hoops like most other Mapex products. The Musicians friend chat person could not answer my questions about this product effectively. I needed to add 2.3 mm hoops to the drum. The original hoops are very poor quality. The mapex drum hardware was different from the illustrated drum lugs in the ad, and each lug was hollowed out on top. Not as attractive as other similar Mapex hardware. This affects the cosmetic appearance of the product. The website photos do not show this detail. The throw off looks cheap and has a plastic knob, but it functions effectively. The drum heads need to be upgraded to realize the full potential of this drum shell but this was expected. The natural maple MPX snare shell was a beautiful golden wood grain with clear coat finish and the shell was "in round " and square with very nice bearing edges. If you are considering this drum, you are getting a nice shell, but you will need to add better hoops, new skins and an appropriate strainer. These items add significant cost to this product, so closely consider them when comparing it to other similar products that may come equipped with some of the items I have listed as concerns. Considering the additional cost for unknown or misrepresented product accessories for a significant amount of money, I cannot recommend this product as represented. If you want a nice maple shell and have some spare parts or you are willing to spend some additional money to upgrade the snare then it would be a worthwhile project.

Comments about Mapex MPX Maple Snare Drum:

I have expected more. The look of snare is superb, but it doesn't give the sound I have desired. I have expected deep, fat, low sound provided with maple shell and depth (7"). It can be reached but just sporadically. Also, drums can't preserve tuning, it detunes to easily and has too much overtones. If you like high tuning though and strong rimshots, you could be happy. Still, maybe I have expected too much if you consider the price of this drum.

Comments about Mapex MPX Maple Snare Drum:

I had higher hopes for this snare, but overall its not a bad sounding drum. Changed out the heads to Evans and put a new snare on it and it really made it come to life. Not as good as my Black Panther, but it's a good snare none-the-less.

Comments about Mapex MPX Maple Snare Drum:

I bought this snare in the name of science and while I didn't get it from Musicians Friend, I have bought other stuff from them in the past and it has always been early and never damaged. I bought the 14x8 snare in hopes of getting a Danny Carey like sound. I will say that for the price its a good looking drum, but you can tell they had to cut costs somewhere. The snare wires were my first upgrade, and after I replaced them, the drum really came alive. For being 8 inches deep, it became responsive. After that I decided to put a Remo White max kevlar head on, and ma this drum is LOUD! I feel like this head and drum were made for each other. Anyway, I really like this snare and will be buying more of the MPX line soon!

Comments about Mapex MPX Maple Snare Drum:

On sale, and with a coupon, I ended up paying eighty five for this snare, which feels like out of a Twilight Zone episode to me. But even at full price, this snare is totally worth it. This snare is sturdy, beautifully finished, and the hardware is well built. Nylon washers makes tuning a breeze. The look of the snare is stunning. It will look good with any color of drum set (I have a silver sparkle, and it goes well with that)
The Remo heads that came with the snare are not too bad. If you don't want to spend extra money right away, and you are good at tuning, they will do the job for a while. I did changed them though. I put an Evans dry on the batter, and a Hazy 300, on the snare side.
This snare produces a great sound at all turnings, it is very versatile. It is very responsive, and crisp. I usually like to tune snares pretty tight, but with this one, I was surprised to like it better with a little looser batter head. This snare is loud, especially on the rimshots. It is great for live performances. The first time I took it to a gig, and hit it, the bass player turned around in amazement. It is always good to confirm that what we hear is not only in our head.
The only problem was that it was advertised as coming with 20 strands snares, and it came with 14. But this ended being a good thing. I have not used a 14 strand in probably 30 + years, I forgot what it was like. In this snare, the 14 strand makes the snare shell come alive. I did switch to a 20 strand though, just to give it a little more snare sound. I am having a hard time deciding which one I like the best, the snare sounds great with both. I will keep the 20 for now, since it is more appropriate for the music of my upcoming gigs.
I will not consider this snare drum an entry level drum. It is an intermediate drum, at an entry level price (or less than entry!).
Amazing snare drum, at an amazing price.

Comments about Mapex MPX Maple Snare Drum:

I got this to go with my Mapex Pro M Maple jungle bop kit, and it's perfect. More snap crackle and pop than a box of you know what, even with the stock heads, right out of the box. I am a recent Mapex convert after using dogged out vintage Ludwig, Slingerland and new Gretsch. The bearing edges on Mapex drums are incredible, and they tune easily with a definite musical tone. Great deal for a 13.
