Comments about Mapex Voyager Standard Drum Set:

I primarily play guitar/upright bass for a living. As an empty-nest-er I have a few empty bed rooms. So why not turn the whole house into a home studio right? So I bought a set of Mapex Voyager Drums (while they were on sell) along with a cymbal pack (hi-hat, crash, ride) and matching Mapex boom stand for crash. I set them up, watched several drum tuning videos, tuned the drums up, tuned them up again the next day, etc.... tweaked the tuning some more, tweaked the set up more. Spent extra time on the bass drum. After a couple of days I decided the set was playable. It sounds good to my ear. As a freelance rhythm section player in rock/country/swing/jazz situations, I hear plenty of drum sets. I will not be loading this set in and out of venues. It will sit in the corner bed room where I track drums. Seems like a nice starter set, or a good gigging set.

At first I thought one tom had a broken lug. The threaded nut on the receiving end was missing, but I found it loose in the bottom of a bag. I put it in and threaded the lug and all was good. I don't know how that lug got loose. I don't think it's supposed to come apart like that. None of the other lugs came apart like that. So when I change the heads, I'll have to pay attention otherwise I could loose that part and then I'd need to replace the whole lug. For this defect I knocked off one star.

Comments about Mapex Voyager Standard Drum Set:

Musicians Friend assured there would be complete assembly instructions. No wonder they unloaded it at half price. Experts don't want any part of assembling this disaster. I have lost my desire to learn drums. If I can hire someone to make it fit back in the boxes it is going back. Musicians Friend advised me to watch tutorials on the internet. I guess they noticed my big orders have quit going into their bank vault.

Comments about Mapex Voyager Standard Drum Set:

I have had this 5-piece for a couple of years, for my daughter to learn on, and for me to learn as well. I think it is a great starter set. Huge sound from the bass drum, floor tom, toms, etc. Perhaps too much! The toms are very resonant. Carefully tune them, and I recommend Moon Gel, a pad or two on each drum.

In all, this drumset doesn't look, sound, feel like the cheaper entry-level drumsets, that's for sure. Shell build quality feels good to me, and hardware feels very solid. I think the build quality is good at this price point. I like that it includes a crash and a crash/ride, which gives you versatility as a player right out of the box. The cymbals (including hats) aren't great quality but are just fine for learning and jamming. I recommend upgrading them.
One thing I don't love is the arrangement of the mounted toms - they just feel too far away from me. I think there are better mounting systems out there. Despite that, the hardware feels very solid to me.

I have since added a Mapex double pedal and a second crash, with a cheap Mapex Rebel cymbal stand.

      Decent kit for the price.

Comments about Mapex Voyager Standard Drum Set:

Bought this kit on the Stupid Deal of The Day. Great price! After getting it all set up and tuned(had a little trouble with the kick), it sounds good. Not great but good. I knew I wasn't buying a $2k DW kit so I'm happy with what it is.
