This has a great sound for being so small and light! The doum and tek sounds are just like a darabouka, nice and open. I've not read of anyone buying or even trying the 6", but I'm gonna take it upon myself to try it out. Great drum, don't be put off by the blue Mylar head. By the way, the metal oxidizes and will rub off on you, but it doesn't look or smell that bad. I barely notice.

This is light and compact and would be easy to pack along hiking or camping. The tuning ring sticks up a bit more than some other hand drums and does get in the way just a bit making it uncofortable to play for long periods. It makes medium to very high and tin can pearcing sounds and makes all those egyptian belly dancing sounds easy to reproduce. I think this is a good way to try a hand drum with it's varying center to side sound range on the cheap for those who are just curious but I'm glad I also bought a larger djembe at the same time.
Synthetic- mylar? head similar to basic drum kit heads. Aluminum body is lighteight and looks like it would make a good jet engiine exhaust.
Everything fits where it's supposed to, It hasn't broken. I've adjusted the tuning a bit with no trouble but the cast hardware is a bit rough and unpolished. It's everything shown in the pics though.
I tossed this in the cart when I ordered a remo djembe recently. Considering the price, I think it's a great value.

Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

Stop thinking about it, and just buy one. These are awesome. The sound is totally NOT what you expect from some plastic head, and aluminum body.I own both the 6 and 8 inch drums. I like the 8" better because of the deeper bass. However, a very unique (in a good way) sound.

Best Deal on a Hand Drum

By AydG7O4qV

from Madison, WI

Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I got this drum a while back to add some percussion to acoustic recordings. What a fantastic deal! I have the 8 inch, it gets great bass tones and good rim slaps too, unreal for the price. It's very light but seem extremely solid. If you are thinking about getting a small hand drum, you won't be disappointed with this.

Cheap and Great!!

Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

This drum can produce an amazing variety of tones. You can press the head on the edge with your thumb while hitting either the rim or the head with your other hand and get a great bend out of it. Honestly, it can sound like 4 or 5 percussion instruments. I own tablas, a dholak and other hand percussion. This (I bought the 8") is an incredible bargain!! A word of advice: There is definetly a 'sweet spot' that makes this little guy come alive by patiently tuning and then gently stretching the head.

Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I got the schalloch alluminum darbuka 3 days ago and i havnt stopped playing it since. I got the 8" because I thought the 6" would be way to small, this is a small drum but its not too small. It has great, resonant low tones and very authentic conga-like high tones. I would like it to have a wider range in between its 2 main tones, but other than that its a great drum, especcially for the price. U need to get one soon.

      Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I was looking for a small, lightweight and not expensive drum with good sound, so I could take it with me on road trips and don't be overprotective of it, because of its value. I'm not professional - just like to drum and sensitive to sounds, so my opinion my not be relevant to professional musicians, but this drum is great for its price. And the customer service has been a pleasant experience as well.

      Best fifteen bucks ever spent

      By Chaobell

      Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I just got the 6", and I'm probably going to come back for the 8" in a couple of weeks. This drum is great, and dirt cheap to boot. The only gripe I have is that, being aluminum, it tends to leave black stuff on fingers; I discovered this the hard way after unwittingly transferring said black stuff to my face. At work. Ah well. That's why God made Handi-Wipes, and it certainly won't make me stop playing this thing.

      Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I bought the 8" model as an extra drum for practice while I learn about middle eastern rhythms and techniques. I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy playing this drum. I'll sit and play it for hours. Someone mentioned the black stuff you get on your hands from the aluminum. It's true, and I fixed that problem easily by thoroughly cleaning it a couple times with Windex window cleaner and a rag, and then applying a couple coats of regular furniture polish like Pledge and buffing it out with paper towels. It looks great and no more black stuff. This drum is very well worth the money. There are certain ways to play a drum like this so get one and enjoy the fun sounds you can make with it. It's very alive and sounds very cool with finger roles and other mid-east techniques.

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I had to do my research on this. Even though I'm a pro musician, this would be my first darbuka and I was iffy on this. I found out Schalloch is put out by Meinl. So, those of you who were wondering, they're similar. It also comes with your hex key for tuning along with a catalog of all Meinl products.

After tuning it a tad the drum was quickly ready for playing. Love the loud sound this smaller style of doumbek makes, from the deep bass to the high timbre. If you're not crazy about the head, you can always interchange with other heads of this size, so it's very versatile from my view.

So, stop thinking and just get this one. It's the best for the buck.

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

Awesome.Just awesome.I've played other Darbukas, but never owned one until I saw this one. When I got it I thought it would be lame (it looks like I could have a nice cup of ale out of this thing... I got the 6 inch) but after whacking out a couple "doums" I found a ridiculously high volume for such a little drum... not to mention it weighs like half a pound. And its cheap! The only thing weird is that it has allen-wrench tuners, so if your an old seasoned drummer with drum keys coming out of your ears, they're not gonna help.

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I bought this just to have SOMEthing to play during the occasional acoustic set when I don't have room to bring the full kit, or just to use during impromptu acoustic jam sessions. I wasn't expecting much for the price, but it's great! Once you tune it up a bit, it's got a nice, mellow low tone that's much deeper than you'd expect for the size, as well as a sharp upper register that I love. I've got the 8", and definitely recommend it! My only complaint is that it uses an allen head to tune, but that's hardly worth mentioning since I almost never need to tune it. Also, I haven't looked into replacement heads, but at this price, if I ever break the head, I'll just buy a new one.

AWESOME!!! What a deal! I got the 6" Alluminum Darbuka and highly reccomend it. This is my 5th drum and it plays so well with incredible tone. My four year old daughter sounds great on it too. I will probably get the 8" in the near future. Quick delivery, great value, awesome product. I am grateful.

Amazing Sound From Such a Small Package..

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I just purchased the eight inch and it is an excellent deal for the money.. I'm very suprised by the sound range on such a small drum.. Especially the high end on this drum using finger snapping sounds great.. If you've never owned one, you can't beat the price on this one to try it. I'm thinking of matching this one with a Djambe I just purchased on this site for a great range of sound..

        Excellent buy

        By girlthatdrums

        from New York

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

I purchased this as a cheap substitute to take on the road so a more expensive Darbuka wouldn't get wrecked. Not only does the tone on this drum sound suprisingly good, it cuts through even better than my more expensive drum. They both have very different sound characteristics, but the ability of this one to cut through the mix has made it my go to drum. Given the price point, I don't mind tossing it around and letting get a little banged up on the road!

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

This was an impulse buy, here on Musician's Friend a couple weeks back. I have never played a drum of any kind before, but it appealed to me. I have been very pleased with it. It has a lot more sound than I would have credited with it. Definately worth it if you are interested in messing around with a drum.

        Comments about Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka:

i've got a 6" version and an 8", i can't believe how loud they are for the size of them. the 8" is almost as loud as my big egyptian 10" darbuka made by shalloch! the bass is powerful and long lasting, and the highs are very loud in open areas. it's very lightwieght and portable while being quite durable, the skins will last up to 3 years! recommended to all!
