Great drum with not so great head

Comments about Schalloch Tumba with Stand:

Good drum shell with good bass tone once the original head is replaced with a Remo NuSkyn or Fibreskyn. Original head is fine for beginners but not usable for recording due to ringy overtones. Basket stands are nice adder but do not adjust low enough to allow drum to be used comfortably by seated players (have to take drum out of stand and place on wood slats on floor instead to allow air movement out of shell as you play). The Schalloch line is a value line, which means the bennies that come with LP congas-better chromed hoop, bumpers on the lugs to keep drums from scratching each other, and a good original head-arent there but then the price isnt up there like an LP either
Really good drum for the money but be warned the head is not that good and you'll need to budget a replacement for it (it rings pretty badly when tuned up making it un-usable for recording). I'm giving it 6 because of the lousy head (these should come with Remo NuSkyns at a minimum...OR the option to get a Remo head should be given) and because the basket stand does not adjust low enough to be used from a sitting position. This should be looked at by Schalloch. Not all of us play congas standing up. Great heavy shell and finish though so overall a pretty good buy.
Well made shell and nive finish (mine is Wine Red) but lug clips on the shell should have screws above and below lug similar to LP design instead of on the sides of the lug as these do. Time will tell if lateral forces will pull the screws on the lugs out. This hasnt happend on my LP congas, which date back to 1987!. It would also be nice if the lug washers had rubber bushings like the LP(s) do to keep the congas from rubbing together. This would cost Scalloch, what maybe sixty cents a unit for six lugs?
Good drum shell and the basket stand make it a value but the poor head that comes with the drum bring overall value down to average

Nice Tumba for the money but.....

Comments about Schalloch Tumba with Stand:

I needed a tumba to round out my set just as Peter did. I found this drum to be of pretty decent quality, with a nice adjustable height basket stand included and pretty good crown to the head to protect the hands. Wine Red finish on mine matched my Yamaha Stage Customs (not that that matters, but hey) and the cheapie LP congas I bought in 1986.It's a heavy sucker though, so if you plan on gigging with it plan on getting a hard case that you can truck to the stage. It's that bulky. As I said, nice for the money, but to get the price point low they compromised on the head. Basically, it's horrible. Peter mentioned a ring overtone when the drum is tuned, and I got that too. Played with the head for hours, just couldnt get rid of it. The head is some type of low quality thinnish Buffalo hide (feel bad for the critter that gave it up for this lousy head...poor thing died in vain). If you buy this drum, plan on replacing the head day one with something better like a Remo Fibreskin or a Evans conga head...anything but the Schalloch head that comes on this or any of the other Schalloch congas I suppose.

Comments about Schalloch Tumba with Stand:

These Tumbas expand my set. I've stuck with Schallock and the brand seems to fit the bill (my middle name is Hallock!) The Tumba does have a little bit of a mid range ring witch I'll need to tune the bass sound to high baritone to fix; maybe they don't make a bass conga to go super low. I'm glad I bought this. Vintage sunburst is a classic.
