OVERVIEW

Yamaha's next advancement in the DTX series!

The DTX522K Electronic Drum Set by Yamaha features the DTX-PAD snare with newly developed tom pads, exclusive 3-zone hi-hat and cymbal pads, plus the incredible sounds and features of the DTX502 module in an affordable kit configuration.

Utilizing the DTX-PAD snare for superior stick feel, you can play the head, open rimshot, and closed rimshot voices in each of the three zones for authentic snare expression. This model also features 3-zone operation for the ride, crash and hi-hat. The drums and percussion voices in the new DTX502 module lets you sound your absolute best, and with the advanced practice tools and easy song recorder you will be getting better all the time. The USB port allows control over VSTi software and lets you import custom wave files.

Using proprietary laser technology to analyze drum strokes, Yamaha precisely tuned the trigger settings on the DTX502 series resulting in a more natural feeling with laser accuracy. You also get advanced features from higher end models like cymbal muting, natural cymbal swells, and smoother snare drumrolls so the kits respond to every nuance of your playing, and 3-Zone hi-hat technology when using the PCY100 as a hi-hat pad.

The DTX522K also features the professional 3-zone cymbal pads, which can express a different sound in each of the cup, bow and edge zones. These cymbals have a good stick feel and low acoustic noise, which is essential for electronic drums when used for private practice. In addition to a very natural swaying motion, they also have the "choke" function 360-degrees around the edge. You can even mute the cymbal before striking it - a DTX exclusive feature!

New drum training functions are included to challenge you no matter your current skill level every time you practice. Working with these tools will help you improve the most important skills for drumming from rhythmic timing to pad accuracy and endurance. The system will even generate a score so you can track your progress as you improve.

The DTX502 module can be expanded with four additional pads or triggers. Pad upgrades let you build your dream kit as your skills improve. USB connectivity lets you connect to a PC.

Kick pedal sold separately.

I bought this kit over a Roland mainly because on paper, you got more bang for your buck. It came to a little over $1200 CAD.

I was searching and searching like crazy to find reviews for this kit online, but rest assured that you're getting an incredibly sounding, solid built drum kit. The preset kits sound amazing after a little tweaking and most of the play along songs are fun to jam to. I love the built in recording button.

The ONLY thing I've found to be a little frustrating is that sometimes the cymbals have issues determining whether you are playing the bow or bell of the cymbal, and muting is not always 100% accurate.

As I said, if you want to get an insane amount of features and you're a novice to experienced musician, look no further than any of the kits from the Yamaha DTX500K series.

I do not regret this purchase one bit.

Make no mistake, this is a great kit for it's versatility. I initially purchased an electronic kit to give me the ability to switch between multiple different kit sounds in a live setting to allow for more versatility in tone. In addition, it was a nice bonus to be able to dial my sound to be able to play at odd hours without distribing neighbors, unlike an acoustic kit will so often do.

+++
I have been using this as my de-facto drum kit for the band I am playing in - the snare is responsive and I was very impressed with the sensitivity of the pads and response to the velocity of my strikes. As I am left-handed, this kit can be maneuvered for a left handed setup with ease.

It has rimshots, cymbal bell responses and edge of cymbal strike responses all duly built in -- you can expect to play it like an acoustic kit and still get all the voicing you're looking for! Be warned though that sometimes your strikes don't always trigger accurately.

Another nice bonus is you can send the kick out to another electronic device if you want to use it to trigger a different kick sound. I've also used this with my DAW to operate as a MIDI trigger via USB (too many TLAs?).

------
My biggest issues with this kit are the hardware, sound banks. The clamping systems they use for the toms, snares and arms for the frame need to be constantly re-tightened from play as they tend to slip after some time. This may simply be from years of playing as they wear loose -- the clamps are plastic grip.

The sound bank offers good versatility and it does have some quality drum sounds, but don't expect the sound banks to offer up a breakthrough tone for each sound bank -- many are very generic with little ability to tweak the sounds. For recording, I've used it as a MIDI trigger and built my own drum sounds through the DAW.

Overall this is a great bang for the buck and great intro to using electronic drum kits.

Comments about Yamaha DTX522K Electronic Drum Set:

I had the DTXplorer that had a bit less functionality, but was still a great kit. Had it for four years originally as a home kit. It made it's way to gigs and the sound was solid. A stident of mine had this kit and I knew it had to be mine one day. 1) Snare head is awesome with a rim for click option and it's response is MUCH better then the DTXplorer 2) You can choke these cymbals and get three different sounds out of them (depending on the setting) 3) It's nice having a bell again on a cymbal :) 4) Many of the drum sounds sound eq-ed already - and there are new sounds to this set 5) The hi hat acts more like a hit in it's feel & response as opposed to the previous which was a rubber head like the rest of the drums 6) Where there was around 10 custom set options there are now 50. This set was worth every penny and it has it's maiden gig voyage next week - can't wait!

Comments about Yamaha DTX522K Electronic Drum Set:

I use this set in my studio as a trigger to the superior drum software in pro tools and studio one 3.0.
I was frustrated when I first bought this set because I thought that with usb it would cut off in 30 mins if it sat still too long but all I had to do was disable the timer and problem solved. I use solely for recording live feeling drums. The presets are good, but if you want to control individual drums separately you have to set up the midi drivers for the dtx to record data, otherwise you're just gonna record audio files that cannot be separated . With that being said I love this set, it 's good for live shows and works excellent for studio sessions. I would recommend it to my friends....

Comments about Yamaha DTX522K Electronic Drum Set:

Great kit. Using in home studio where myself and other visiting guitar and bass players need a basic kit to lay percussion track down. Even the few drummers I've had up really appreciate the simplicity and versatility of this kit.....as much as drummers can appreciate "electronic" kits! The control module is very simple to use. You can scroll through all settings and make adjustments in seconds and keep on playing. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE or ORDER foot pedal for kick drum!!!!

I have a acoustic pearl vision birch set but don't get to play them because I have a wife. so I got myself and early Christmas gift and I love them. Yes there is a little different feel to them, especially the hi hat. But over all great buy.

After doing some research found this to be a great buy. The downside is the kick pedal loosens up during use and has now busted. Pot metal parts in the pedal break easily.
Aside from having to get a better pedal this is a good deal for someone needing to get a good sound and have adjustable sounds from each piece.

Comments about Yamaha DTX522K Electronic Drum Set:

I've had this kit for close to 6 months. It's very well made, triggers are extremely responsive and sensitive, many different kits and sounds to choose from, and the module includes some cool features. This kit feels pretty close to the real deal, I'm impressed. The kick pad does fit a double kit pedal as well. Would give this 5 stars but only complaint I have is the pads move around a bit even though I have everything snugged up pretty good. My bad, I'm a hard hitter.

Comments about Yamaha DTX522K Electronic Drum Set:

Our drummers on the worship team use a Roland set, but I needed something more economical for our rehearsal space. While it does not have mesh pads, it is every bit, or better than the other kit in many respects. The 3 zone cymbals and snare give a true feel and sound. The built in drum kits sound great and the hi-hat has very good response. All in all, a great kit for hundreds less than a comparable model. If you are an experienced drummer and want to get a professional sounding kit for under a grand, this is your best choice. Compare features at this price point and you'll see this is true.

Setup is straight forward and no guess work following the assembly instructions. You won't get a high-grade Gibraltar rack, but the drums are lightweight digital, so unless your playing style consists of driving the sticks into the bottom of the pad, the rack is more than adequate. Kick pad will accept any standard single or double pedal. (read fine print, you supply your own) I'm very pleased with the quality of the set and our drummers find it every bit as good as our stage kit.

Comments about Yamaha DTX522K Electronic Drum Set:

It's a nice mid-grade set. I purchased it just to practice without driving my wife and kids insane. It was easy to get set up and operational and came with everything needed. It has decent drum/percussion sounds and you can add others, although I haven't done that yet. I love the fact that you can add 4 more pads/triggers. Most others in that price range only allowed 2 additional pads. I added another tom pad, and 2 more cymbals so far. There's only two complaints I have and one of those could just be a setting that I haven't figured out yet. That is that the hi-hat controller seems to be a little slow on "opening the hi-hat". There is a setting that sets the point at which it opens as you raise your foot, but it still seems a little slow and nothing I can find will change that. I'll keep looking tho. The second complaint is that it only comes with 1MB of storage for other sounds. You can possibly add ONE custom kit with that amount of storage. There's no reason that it doesn't come with more storage in today's day and age, but I knew that when I purchased it so it's not like they were being deceptive. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase, shipping and service.
